The Tsarnaev Brothers Raise Questions About Our National Security State

Let’s start with something simple: the elder brother bomber, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, put up a YouTube video advocating Jihadi extremism and violence.

So please tell me again why the government needs warrantless wiretap authority to keep us safe!

But that is only small piece of the puzzle. We’ve all seen the information. In 2011, the Russian government allegedly worried about some kind of connection between Tamerlan Tsarnaev and terrorist groups. They informed the US government and requested that Tsarnaev be interviewed and investigated. The FBI did so. They found no such connections and released him.

About half a year later, Tsarnaev made a “mysterious” visit to Russia and was there for six months. I find that really interesting. I would guess that Russian authorities would flag someone like him if they went to the trouble to have him investigated in the United States. I don’t understand how his name didn’t raise any alarms at the border. Or did he have a passport with a different name? Who could supply such a thing?

I’m not the only one asking such questions:

“A Republican-led House committee is asking the Obama administration for all information on the Boston bombing suspect once suspected of engaging in terrorist activities, saying the tragedy marks another intelligence failure and raises ‘serious questions about the efficacy of the federal counter-terrorism efforts.’ The letter was sent Saturday by the House Committee on Homeland Security to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, National Intelligence Director James Clapper and FBI Director Robert Mueller. In the letter, Committee Chairman Rep. Mike McCaul says bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev appears to be the fifth person since 9/11 to participate in a terror attack, despite being under FBI investigation.”

Some are claiming there is nothing to worry about:

“‘The FBI did its due diligence’ Rep. Mike Rogers said on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press.’ Rogers, R-Mich., a former FBI agent, also suggested Tsarnaev could have made overseas trips under an alias.”

But how do you travel overseas under an alias? It if were easy, then there is no point in pretending that requiring ID is helping national security. If it required sophisticated knowledge and means, and/or money, then this is evidence, again, that Tsarnaev had help. How did the FBI miss these connections when they investigated him?

In my opinion, nothing is more important than finding out what the FBI knew and when they knew it. We need Congress to investigate how the elder Tsarnaev went to Russia and returned without causing a reaction on the part of either government. What exactly did they investigate and how quickly was Tsarnaev able to radicalize after that investigation without their knowledge.

Specifically, we need to find out if he had any further contact with the FBI or with people working for the FBI (including “snitches”). We also need to know if the FBI knew about the YouTube videos and when. Also: how soon after the bombs went off did it the FBI consider the possibility that it might be the Tsarnaev brothers?

Frankly, I still find it hard to believe that the bombs were sponsored by a wider group. But that trip to Russia raises a host of questions that we need answered. The FBI seems to be at the center of the mystery.

Boston was a murder plot, not terrorism. Couple of kids looking to kill people.

If it were a plot to commit an act of terrorism, the FBI and Homeland Security should be replaced by the Keystone Cops and headed up by Barnie Fife and Deputy Dog. We won't discuss the NSA....they're not talking or sharing. Only listening.

If it looks like a duck, quakes like a's an Islamic terrorist duck doing what Islamic terrorist ducks do~~ Blow up the pond and everything in it.

The FBI, DHS, Military, and police organizations have been carrying out Obama's orders.

They've expunged huge amounts of valuable data collected since 911, had their investigative operations ham-strung in the name of political correctness, and stopped informing their agents/officers about the threat of Islam and instead replaced it with a curriculum (propaganda) created by Muslims (with known connections to terrorist organizations) who were appointed to high gov positions and given access to classified information.

Expect them to continue to protect Islamic players as Obama puts more pressure on. As a Muslim committed to seeing the caliphate restored, he will do his part to effectively help the cause.

Ok then if nothing else consider this. Both of these people were known to the FBI and others as they had been warned by the Russians. ANY act of terrorism should have automatically been a flag to bring up all possible suspects that they had. Then you get a matching picture of the terrorists with those on file. Then you go and quietly arrest them. That did not happen instead they had to have known who these two were by the records and still alerted them by putting their pictures on TV. All this accomplished was to kill one of them and to seriously wound another. Of course they would have much prefered to kill both and be done with it and no questions asked. Now with one living they must be very nervous on exactly what he will say and about whom

I am largely in agreement with this article. I think time will show that there was a serious intelligence failure, and it happened locally, in Boston, at the FBI office. When the Russian government requested that the FBI interview Tamerlan Tsarnaev, someone should have known that that was a signal that they knew something about him. It may have come from a deep-cover operative in Chechnya who had gotten close to Gadzhimurad Dolgatov (a.k.a "Abu Dujana"), but someone needs to ask why Tsarnaev was connected to him. The Russians don't routinely come to the FBI for things like this. It was a message. Tsarnaev should have stayed on the radar.

Couldn't agree more. And when the FBI was scouring and sorting thru the frames of those videos and isolated the pictures of the two men, why didn't someone in the FBI recognize him? I mean, it was only 2 years ago that he was questioned....not 10. There was a definite failure at one or more levels and I hope that we will eventually know what they were .

At the very least, I think the FBI should have passed on the information they had about Tamerlan and other potential terrorists to the Boston police so that they had a data base to work from.

Perhaps the FBI should have consulted Fodor's latest Makhachkala Travel Guide. I found some useful info:

Get Around - only with the Russian militia
See - Anzhi Makhachkala, local soccer club
Local Attactions - best from the air above 20,000 ft
Do - IED construction classes with Chechen rebels
Shop - protection from the local militia
Eat - American MREs heated in the blazing sun
Drink - your own bottled water
Sleep - what a great way to keep your head down
Get Out - Uytash Airport, in Kaspiysk, just south of the city.

      I agree.

I concur with you and my fellow/female posters.

I think that is your first positive vote.

      Nice job.

      spot on.

It's my understanding that the Borthers Tsarnaev undewent FOUR Background/Security Checks:

      When they applied for their Tourist Visas;
      When they applied for Asylum;
      When they applied for Permanent Residence;
When they applied for U.S. Citizenship.

HOW, then, are we to expect anything better from these Background Checks, when they throw TENS OF MILLIONS of Illegal Aliens into the queue, if they pass this "Comprehensive Immigration Reform"?

I'm STILL looking for the glaring examples of where the Government DOES THINGS RIGHT!

They are SO FEW, and SO FAR BETWEEN, it's truly frightening!

AND they want to take guns out of OUR HANDS? No thank you!

      • Audrey Fitting

I think our FBI failed us. They dropped the ball. After all, all things point to the fact that Obama is Muslim, and therefore he is protecting them, to get all of us down the road, and I am quite saddened by the fact that he isn't acting on this. He is all over other mass killings lately, and not a decent word, just a brief talk. He hates Americans...its clear.

      • Screeminmeeme

You're right. And good question. The FBI failed and it cost the lives of 4 and maimed nearly 200 others. We can't fight terrorism when we have a terrorist in the White House.

    • Hotnike

      Homeland SECURITY?????

  • Doodlebug

It didn't take the Boston Massacre to convince me about our National Security. When you sit back and try to convince the American people that our borders are well protected and have NEVER been more secure was my first clue. Now wanting to give amnesty to how many people???? Refusing to secure the borders first???? Back to allowing knives on planes??? WAKE UP AMERICA, WE ARE HEADED FOR REAL TROUBLE SO HANG ONTO YOUR GUNS, YOU WILL NEED THEM SOON.

  • VanceJ

We are not protected never have been as usual Gov. is lousy at their job can't seem to do anything correctly.

  • Jude O'Connor

The politically correct BS puts the cuffs on enforcement and it has the law enforcement people on pins and needles with the proper communications used, proper this, proper that, it's enough to drive you crazy and when a thug is arrested out of the woodwork comes these screaming people that are more interested on proper manners (their manners) than taking a fugitive off the streets. It's nuts!

  • KayDeeBeau

The reason they didn't link Tamarlan to the Russia trip is because when he filled out the visa form he spelled his name wrong - or else when it was entered into the system - the name was misspelled....

  • fliteking

Well gee whizzzzzz, when the liberals demand the camel breeders muslims be let in the country, then they pay for their food clothing and spending money, then give them scholarships and a place to live . . . you might have a problem .

Taking this approach to preventing terrorism is the same as treating a broken leg by cutting off the patient's head.

    Liberals are idiots.

  • George Wentzel

Why does it seem to take an event like this to raise questions? I've been revolting against our lousy politicians for as long as I can remember which by the way is well in excess of a half century. Please tell me what has to be done to get the attention of others. Are we truly as ignorant of a society as times now suggests we are? Can we really be this stupid? Why can't you people pull you heads out for just a short while and see that we, ourselves, are complicit in the destruction of our Nation. For God's sake, wake up!
