Politicians are Like Dirty Diapers

“Politicians are like diapers; they need to be changed often and for the same reason.” ― Mark Twain

Your husband hears your five-week old baby crying. You know the problem. She has a dirty diaper. You know what needs to be done. Her diaper needs changing. You're tired. The baby's been cranky all day, and you need a rest, even if it's only a short one. Your ever-loving husband is in his workshop. "Honey," you call out to him, "would you be a dear and check on Julie?" He returns with baby in tow and passes her off to you and says, "Her diaper's dirty, so I can't change it."

Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? Dad was sent to change what was dirty, a natural and necessary thing to do. If his response is so foolish, why is it that when we get into an area like politics, some can justify their inaction by making a similar claim?: "Politics is dirty! I can't get involved."

If you view politics as something dirty, then view it in terms of this bumper sticker: "Politicians are like diapers. They need to be changed often." Maybe then we can dispense with the charge that we should not be involved in something as dirty as politics.

Civil government is established by God, therefore, it is a legitimate area of activity for Christians (Matt. 22:21; Romans 13:1; 1 Tim. 2:1-4; 1 Peter 2:13-17). There was a need for civil government when man sinned and became a threat to other men (Gen. 4:23). Politics is the process of electing the best men to office to protect law-abiding citizens against the lawless (Ex. 18; Deut. 1:15; cf. 1 Tim. 3:1-7). To speak out against the principle of political involvement is to call God's wisdom into question and to allow the despots and tyrants to rule.

It's been said that clothes make the man. In biblical terms we can assert that the character of the people will determine what type of political system a nation gets. Our nation was founded on the belief that religious man undergirds a society. "In the last resort, our civilization is what we think and believe. The externals matter, but they cannot stand if the inner convictions which originally produced them have vanished."1 Dirty (sinful) politics is simply the reflection of sinful men and women--politicians and voters included. Or, to put it another way, we are getting what we deserve. We are reaping what we have sown.

So when a sleazy candidate gets elected, or when your local newspaper or TV station seems to favor the abortionists, or when a jury in Cincinnati says an abominable set of photographs isn't legally obscene--when any of those things happen, don't leap to the conclusion that someone did a number on us. Consider instead the sober likelihood that the sleazy politician really represents the values of the people who voted, that most subscribers to the paper and those who watch TV really don't care about--or even prefer--abortion, and that precious few jurors are willing to sit in judgment on anything.2

Politics is only as good as the people who make it their calling and those who put them into office either by voting or refusing to vote. The maintenance of good government is dependent on good people. Of course, this is true of everything--from the local grocery store to the family restaurant down the street. George Washington, in his Farewell Address (September 17, 1796), gave this advice to the nation:

Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.

No governing document can create freedom, national stability, or security by using compulsion to induce compliance to a set of ideals. The best political intentions are no match for the will of the people. In purely human terms, people determine the goodness of a nation's political system. John Adams wrote: "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."3 When self-government is abandoned for self-serving opportunism, we should expect a decline in the health of the nation. Politics will indeed become dirty and infect all of us with its poison.

Why is politics left out of the clean-up process when politics plays such a significant part in our lives? Who else has the means to clean it up? If Christians do not, who will? Generally speaking, Christians have stayed out of politics, making its corruption even more pronounced. The answer is not to consign politics to even more corruption by ignoring its potential as an area for redemption and restoration. Mark O. Hatfield, former United States Senator from the state of Oregon, relates the following on the question of corruption and politics:

I have often been asked: "How can you be a Christian and be in politics?" There is inherent in this question the popular idea that politics is dirty and that no honest person would get himself involved. Have you ever heard a doctor or a lawyer asked that question? Yet certainly there are as many cases of professional or ethical misconduct in their occupations as among politicians.4

Sports is a dirty business, from Little League to the Olympics. Ben Johnson of Canada was suspended after his world-record-breaking performance at the 1988 Olympic Games, because it was learned that he used performance-enhancing drugs. Pete Rose, holder of the all-time hit record and former player and manager for the Cincinnati Reds, was banned from baseball because he gambled on the sport. Mark McGuire, the first baseball player to hit 70 home runs in a season, was accused of taking performance enhancing supplements. The 2001 Little League World series was tainted when it was learned that Danny Almonte, the pitching star of the series, was 14 instead of 12. There are now frequent reports of parents and players fighting at youth sports games.5 In 2003, Kobe Bryant, a guard for the Los Angeles Lakers, admitted he had committed adultery and was charged with raping a nineteen-year-old woman.

How many parents will remove their children from participating in sports because of the dirt? The International Olympic Committee has been working hard to clean up those sports where steroids are the drug of choice for athletic enhancement, especially in track and field and weightlifting. These officials recognize that there is dirt, but they have not abandoned sports because of it. Roberto Alomar spit in the face of an umpire because he didn't like a call. A parent of a young hockey player killed another parent after a hockey match. Instead of abandoning sports because of these horrible events, parents and officials are working to clean up youth sports by requiring parents to take classes on how to behave and sign "good conduct codes." The problem is with people who bring the "dirt" (sin) with them to the game not with sports themselves. The same is true about politics.

Abandoning politics because of dirt won't stop it from affecting you. Every law passed and every policy implemented affects each of us. There is no avoiding politics even if we decide not to involve ourselves. We are involved. Every vote not cast is a vote for the opposition. Politics does not go away when we decide not to participate. Your taxes still go up, homosexuals will teach your children "It's OK to be gay," and abortion calls down God's wrath on the nation as a whole even if we remain silent.

    Unfortunately, one has to read Romans 13: 1-2
    While i'm as eager as anyone to get rid of Obama, it's far worse to call on scripture selectively to bear witness to your point only to find that it actually contradicts you. I think these two verses give faithful Christians severe heartburn in today's political environment but test the metal of the faithful to OBEY His commands. And i mean REALLY test your obedience.
    Romans 13:1-2
    (1) Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.
    (2) Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.

      Very good bearlyme2, however please feel free to read the entire Bible which sez of it's self that ALL Scripture is inspired by God. You'll find; --- several passages encouraging each of us to seek God's approval rather than man's.
      --- several verses encouraging each of us to properly decern the activities of ANY human breing. --- In Eph. 6, St. Paul is inspired by our Lord to explain to each of us what we are up against.

Help me to understand how Ephesians six can be used as justification for engaging in politics. That is not to say we should not engage in politics. But, politics is the affairs of men. You are correct to say we are to seek God’s approval rather than man’s. But to "stand", as it says in Ephesians, is a passive gesture, not an aggressive one. It’s not your involvement in a particular political activity that will change the outcome, it is your behavior. Nor am I suggesting that we not vote. That is our right granted to us under the constitution. So please vote. But, you will be hard pressed to find God’s commandment to vote anywhere in the Bible. God’s commandment is to be holy, for I am holy (1 Peter 1:14-16). That is much, much harder than being combative.

        You are correct. We are governed by our Constitution. If you have the opportunity to read the Declaration of Independence, you will probably note that the second paragraph in that declaration says, “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights…Thus it is from God that we receive our Rights through The Declaration of Independence. So, one could legally argue our governing authority is God.
        Now, rather than quoting the Bible in search of our authority, the Declaration goes on to say (and I think this is what you’re looking for) “That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security…

      When Paul wrote Romans 13, the emperor ruling the Roman Empire was none other than Nero. Thus, Paul was telling the church to obey Nero. If they had to put up with Nero until God let him run his course and commit suicide 11 years later (in AD 68), then I suspect 21st century Christians can (and should) obey our government and exercise our God-given right to remove President Obama from office legally next year.

      Our governing authority is the people. We have a nation that was set up "of the people, by the people, and for the people".
      So the people are the governing authority and those in power only rule by our consent.

    The whole tone of this is morality, diapers being an excellent example. When you put the diaper on you expect it will get dirty, unfortunately the same is true of the new four letter word "politician". The only side issue is not all diapers get put on dirty, but some politicians come in pre-soiled._The saying that all politics are local also coincides with morality and fact that you bring it with you._And then there is pandering!

Start finding out what you politicians stand for and you will have to read between their lies and mis-statements. We have the power to change what is going on in this country but we have to get up off of our lazy asses and get involved. We are bankrupt and the democrats have never seen a dollar that they didn't want to spend. We also have some RINO's in the republican party that should change to the socialist party. If you are on the public dole and you think democrats will save you, just remember one thing, if the world stops loaning us money we are all screwed. All free money will end and the depression will start. The democratic party is responsible for Social security's mess. They voted under President Johnson to rob the trust fund and continue to rob it to this day. Politicians are responsible for the irresponsible decisions made that have gotten us to this point and they should pay by giving up their overpayed positions.     We need them for Congress and for the Supreme Court. Unfortuneately, only Congress can change that and none of these professional, political freeloaders want to give up their "tax-paid gravy train."

        In a bankruptcy all 'contracts' are deemed 'null and void' in order to 'reorganize' the organization... right? (remember the GM stockholders? ie: We the People - took a 'bath', while the unions - OZero's buddies - 'cleaned up'?)

        Lifetime pensions and healthcare are in Congress's contract... (which they wrote - themselves - sweet deal!) ... right?

        Sooo.... as we now spend about $2.00 for each $1.00 we take in - (through taxation of We The People) why are WE 'stuck with the tab' of supporting (for life) the 'people' who

        a) made themselves wealthy - through graft and outright dishonesty?
        b) created the bankrupt situation we find ourselves in?

If you don't like something, change the channel. My Mother told me to RESPECT everyone, no matter what. And she meant to respect their beliefs, their religion, their race, what they liked or disliked (and that even means is they believe in the God, the Devil, Buddha, etc.). She also said even if they liked or disliked pornography. She told me, "Whatever you do, you do not discriminate against anyone. I still believe that to this day. She taught me to turn the other cheek and let people believe in what they want to believe in.

      So, if we encounter an individual who likes child pornography, a sociopath or fanatic who believes in slitting the throats of "infidels", do we still respect them? And as far as racial discrimination, we abhor it. But, we rightfully discriminate daily. We choose who we let into our house, which part of town we walk through at night. We choose to give our money to one business/charity and not another. We exercise judgment and discretion and we follow our intuition around strangers. We do NOT have to tolerate the abuse and oppression, despite some of the religious nonsense posted on this forum!

    Where I come from. The word Politician means=A person who is EXPERIENCED in the SCIENCE of LYING. Some lie in the beginning. Some lie in the middle. Most of them lie at the end to keep their job. That goes from big government to small government. THEY ALL LIE!

    The thing you need to get this country back on track and off the road to socialism isn’t going to happen. Not unless some miracle happens that gets a lot more people to vote.

    In the past elections, less than 50%, of those eligible, even bothered to vote. A politician’s worse nightmare is if everyone eligible voted. Then they would have to work for their constituents and there is no money in that. The big money is in supporting special interest lobbies. That is true for Republicans as well as Democrats. We have the best politicians money can buy.

    The people that don’t vote all have their reasons. Some say the elections are fixed so their vote means nothing. Others say that they didn’t like any of the candidates so they didn’t vote. And my favorite. Still others say they don’t vote so you can’t blame them for the situation the country is in. WRONG! Many people I talk to seem to have an ostrich mentality. They stick their heads in the sand hoping it will all go away. They don’t vote or pay attention to what is going on and they refuse to talk about it, because it is too depressing. So they grab a beer out of the refrigerator, sit in their easy chair, watch sports and stay home on election day. They are part of the problem and an accessory to the fact. They deserve the government they got.

    We need a complete house cleaning in Washington and vote out all incumbents. You don’t have to cross party lines to do it. Encourage the right people to oppose the incumbents in the primaries and vote them out. Then you don’t sacrifice party loyalty. That can work from the President down to the local level.

    Next you need the right kind of people. Bold people who will not be afraid to make the tough decisions in spite of what the media says. Rude people who will fire the dead heads and foot kissers. Tell the business as usual, seven carbon copy idiots, special interest groups and the media to go jump in a lake. Forceful people who will push through the changes we need to get back on track. Most of all they have to be young people because we need to be a young country again. If we get that kind of people, we just may be able to make it work again.

    For this to happen, we need to get a lot more than 48 or 49% to get out and vote. It would take a miracle for that to happen. When the American people put aside their differences and work together they can accomplish almost anything. That is why we were on the winning side in two world wars and that is what made this nation great.

    I’m not saying anything new here that I haven’t said many times before. I’m saying the things that need to be said over and over and we all need to get out there and say them. Get out there and vote America. Leave that beer in the refrigerator, set your VCR or DVR to record that big game so you can get back to it. It won’t kill you and you just may help to make a difference. Obama is praying that you all stay home on election day.

    To those who don’t vote I have one thing to say. If the day ever comes that the minority of voters have voted all our rights away, don’t come complaining to me. I will have one question. Where were you when there was still time to do something about it?

    This was a very good article! Right on. We need to keep uptodate on what is going on in congress and how our own congress men and women are voting on any thing that comes up. AND we need to tell them how they should vote. If they don't vote the way we want, tell them they will be fired the next election! It is very easy to e-mail them and they should respond. I know for that is what I do. So I agree, get involved with congress and the president and all state leaders!! you don't have to be the president or a congressman, just make sure they do what you thought they would do! Love DG

    this is one of the best article that I saw in Godfather for politics. The author is fair and balanced.
    Term limits are needed for the congress, the supreme court and district courts.
    Campaign finance law should be changed too. The election cycle may be shortened to six weeks to
    eliminate many distractions and expensive campaigns.

    Dragon Fire - One battle won or lost doesn't win or lose a war. You just dig your trench deeper and wider, resupply and start over. Once you give up, YOU HAVE LOST, not only the ground you won, but the ground you could have won along with some of your self respect and dignity. You may lose the battle, but at least you will have known you gave it your best, learned from your mistakes and be better prepared for the next one.

    We've tried everything else: Why not give them one term? All we have to do is consistently VOTE OUT! If they are in put them out. Anybody is better than some jerk that has been there long enough to learn how to steal. When they come home give them a parade or a rope depending on performance.

    I don't remember Jesus lobbying the Roman government very much. I do read in the Bible that he was out in the world helping the poor, sick, hungry and not worrying about the governments roll. I believe that instead of 100,000 christian showing up at Washington and protesting, it would be much more "Christ Like" for them (and me) to show up at Washington with food, water, for the homeless and sick helping out in anyway possible. That would be a modern day miracle that the general population could get behind and at lead our politicians by example.

I hope you will continue to give us your thoughts along with some Bible quotes that I believe this Nation needs now more because too many people think that they can just do whatever they want without ever having to pay the final cost. I just read an email where a man was trying to justify the use of his Marijuana use. I told him that before the U.S. Constitution and the Founding Fathers there was The BIBLE and before that there is GOD ALMIGHTY and His Holy, Divine SON, Jesus Christ and that GOD told Adam and Eve not to touch or partake of the FORBIDDEN Fruit and I said, that Marijuana is one of those FORBIDDEN Fruits that if you mess around with it you will surely die and/or they will go into selling their SOUL to Satan and never come out of that.

    I can only hope that one day the citizens of the United States wake up and realize the vision for this country was lost many decades ago. The Founders created a template to empower the individual by restricting the government. "Citizen legislators" were expected to bring their knowlege and experience to Congress in an attempt to guard their constituents from government overreach. They knew power intoxicates and every intervention into the private lives of the citizens is a usurpation of freedom. They also knew that a populace that looked to the government for sustenance would become subservient and powerless. In other words, we no longer run the government, we've been bought off and they run us. And, in turn, the politicians have been bought off by the money changers. "We the people" have become nothing more than a source of revenue or a collective signature on a promissory note. The American Experiment is over. It's been over for some time now and what we are watching is a band of self-aggrandizing fools trying to prop up a house of cards that they themselves erected. And, sadly, we keep buying the BS and sending them back to fix what they only know how to break. It's just a matter of time.
