A Majority of Catholics Got What They Voted For

catholics-for-obama54% of Catholics voted for Obama in 2008. Now the Catholic Bishops are screaming bloody murder because of contraception mandates. Maybe it’s only the 46% that didn’t vote for him who are doing the screaming.

What about the Catholic bishops? They got behind Obamacare like they got behind every so-called Progressive social justice program. Here’s how Stephanie Block frames the issue:

For Over 40 years you’ve been funding, via the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, community organizations with progressive political agendas that convinced you that your religious world and your public policy world were two separate entities. You wanted universal health care? Well, so did they. Never mind the pesky little business of abortion and family planning funding. But here it is, back at you!

Oh, wait.  Not only have you been funding these guys to see that fellow progressive organizers like themselves got put into political office – think Obama – but you’ve been systematically reeducating your Catholic people to understand “social justice” in terms of precisely such organizing, with all the lovely compromises that entails. And now you’re surprised that it’s threatening your charitable activities?

Now that the chickens have come home to roost, the Roman Catholic hierarchy are in shock that they’re going to have to pay for mandated medical procedures. They knew mandates were part of the legislation when they pushed their fellow Catholics to support it. In fact, they knew about them when it was HillaryCare.

Here’s what George Will had to say on their support for ObamaCare:

The Catholic Bishops, it serves them right. They’re the ones who were really hot for Obamacare, with a few exceptions. But they were all in favor of this. And this is what it looks like when the government decides it’s going to make your healthcare choices for you.

Once we allow government to govern in areas not outlined in the Constitution, there is no place they won’t govern, even when the initial legislation doesn’t give them the authority. It doesn’t take long before some lawyer and a sympathetic court extends the reach of the State far beyond what was originally proposed. George Will continues:

This is what liberalism looks like. This is what the progressive State does. It tries to break all the institutions of civil society, all the institutions that mediate between the individual and the state. They have to break them to the saddle of the state.

Herbert Schlossberg made the same point in his book Idols for Destruction:

The paternal state not only feeds its children, but nurtures, educates, comforts, and disciplines them, providing all they need for their security. This appears to be a mildly insulting way to treat adults, but it is really a great crime because it transforms the state from being a gift of God, given to protect us against violence, into an idol. It supplies us with all blessings, and we look to it for all our needs. Once we sink to that level, as [C.S.] Lewis says, there is no point in telling state officials to mind their own business. “Our whole lives are their business.”[1] The paternalism of the state is that of the bad parent who wants his children dependent on him forever. That is an evil impulse.[2]

It’s been said, “Be careful what you wish for . . . You might get it.” Well, the Catholics got. The contraception mandate is only one of many that all of us have to live with.

Sad to say this is true. I'm a Catholic, but too many of my fellow Catholics have soft spots for immigrants and the poor — not realizing that we can no longer provide services carte blanche to everyone. This is not being selfish, but simply responsible. I give plenty of money to charity, but I also have some prudence as to what charities are legitimate and which are not. Democrats don't have the market on compassion. The liberal Catholics have gotten their worst wish granted, and now they are seeing what was hidden inside the Obamacare's fine print. I don't think the bishops will be fooled twice on this. In letters read last weekend at churches in this area, the bishops implied that they are very close to making political endorsements. And, of course, THEY will be the ones fried over the church/state thing. Obama has no qualms about settin religious policy, but if the clergy tries to set government policy, they catch holy hell.

Catholics don't support birth control ONLY for selfish, self-serving reasons! The church needs to have an ongoing (Hispanic) population to $u$tain them into the next generation and the next and the next. They are HYPOCRITICAL, IRRESPONSIBLE and ARROGANT.
I know because I used to BE one of them……I left the Catholic church when I was in high school (a Catholic high school) and never regretted my decision! To support Obama and his COMMUNIST AGENDA is supporting ABORTION and all the other EVILS that go along with his DISGUSTING socialist programs!! Wise up, SHEEPLE! Pray that God will forgive your IGNORANCE!!

Although I don't like the Roman Catholic Church because of their bigotry and idol worship, this article has a false premise. If the Catholics who voted for Obama got what they deserved, then what about Soutern Baptists, evangelical blacks, Jews, etc ? This should not be about one religious institution, it's should be classified as attack on faith.

John, Idol worship also includeds praying to any kind of human born from a womans womb who is dead or alive.

I don't understand how any one can call themselves catholic and be for killing the unborn, 1st thing I look at in any candidate is there stand on abortion, shame on you people who vote for baby-killing politicians, when you no longer respect the miracle of life and protect the unborn we get what we deserve, because all life will eventually not be respected.

In all fairness to the Catholic bishops, there were some who did not support Obummer back in 2008. I go to a very conservative Catholic Church, and our Archbishop sent out sheets to be given out at the Masses about the candidates' stand on abortion. Although we are not allowed to show support of one candidate over another, it was obviously done to encourage the parishoners to vote for the pro-life candidate. I am a Catholic and I certainly did NOT vote for this imposter, and, as a matter of fact, I really don't know any Catholics (at least the ones I know personally) who did vote for him. So, while there are some foolish Catholics who did vote for this guy, please don't blame all of us!

As a practicing Catholic, I did not vote for Obama. The Catholic church has always supported the progressive, socialist causes. I can never understand why the church does not realize that these liberal causes want to eliminate all religion from the landscape since it takes away from the "state's" power over the masses. Now the socialist progressive serpent has bit them maybe the religions of the Republic wil unite and help the people reclaim their Republic.

Well, I didn't vote for Obama, but I am guilty of wasting my vote on McCain.
I don't think he would have been much better.
    I have learned my lesson.
I hope those that voted for Obama don't think Hillary will be any better.
I think she would be even worse than Obama.

I particularly hated when the head of Notre Dame University welcomed to the campus such a know anti Catholic declared piece of garbage and I personally phoned this priest and told him what I thought of his invitation for nobama to speak at his campus. Oh well now he is shown to be the ignorant leader he is. Richard

The Chickens have come home to roost—-The Catholics got what they voted for.

The thing is—They ain't seen nothing yet—This is just the tip of the ice berg—wait for the next four years with this Anti-Christ
    .
I bet that Chicago Catholic activist priest Father Phleger ( the obama supporter ) has a huge smile on his face.

Well all you devout abortion loving Catholics —keep drinking the Kool-Aid

Why do Catholics continue to get the brunt of this? This is a Constitutional issue that affects ALL people of conscience and/or those who believe that the Constitution should be interpreted as written. Also, Catholics didn't elect Obama by themselves – 78% of the Jewish vote went to Obama, as well as 95% of the Black vote – and Catholics make up a very small percentage of those two groups. The bottom line is that, using entirely campaign rhetoric and outright lies, Obama and the Dems FOOLED a large group of people who don't really agree with his policies into voting for him. The real discussion here should be: Will it work again?

  • Jeanne

Must have gotten the support from Pelosi type catholics, the ones that don't show up in church!

  • William

Yelll yello and yell some more. Yell thuis coming november whe you have a chance to get the WH cleaned out.

  • Jerry

There's no accounting for why people voted for this phoney. Catholics voted for him, and now are getting screwed. Jews voted for him, and now Israel is in danger of being destroyed. He even carried West Virginia, after he told them he would destroy the coal industry. These same people won't vote for Romney because he is a Mormon, but will vote for an America-hating, commie Muslim. Go figure.

  • Navy Vet

Not so good when the shoe is on the other foot. The Catholics are finding out that when you play with snakes, you will get bitten.
