Political Activism OK for Mosques, Not Churches

Most churches have a non-profit status with the Internal Revenue Service.  One of the provisions of holding a 501c3 non-profit rating is that the church is not allowed to actively take part in political activities or publicly endorse a political candidate.

This has been an issue of contention and debate by many church leaders who contend that the political provision is a violation of the First Amendment rights of free speech and the freedom of religion.  However, in most cases, that have gone to court, the IRS generally wins and the church involved loses its non-profit status.

In reading through the various news reports, two stories caught my eye and caused me to wonder about this issue.

First is the legal battle being waged over a recall of the mayor and 2 city council members in El Paso, Texas.  For background on this case, see El Paso Mayor Fighting Pastor’s Right to Petition for Recall.

This past Friday, the Texas Eighth Court of Appeals declared that the main force behind the recall movement was a church and that churches do not have the right to recall, so the recall election has been halted.  According to Joel Oster, an attorney with the Alliance Defense Fund,

"The appeals court in Texas has stopped the recall election because one of the supporters of the recall election was supposedly a church, and according to the Texas appeals court, a church cannot be involved in a recall election.

"It absolutely is a violation of free speech and a violation of the right to petition your government for the redress of grievances.  The Supreme Court already spoke on this issue and said that even corporations have free speech rights and that states cannot restrict the speech of even corporate entities."

Pastor Brown and the others involved are planning on appealing to the Texas Supreme Court.

In the second news article, Muslims have been standing outside their Michigan mosque handing out flyers in Arabic urging Muslims to support Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul in yesterday’s primary.  And do you think anyone took any action against the Muslims for violating their non-profit status?  Of course not!

Incidentally, did you know that in the 2008 election, Barack HUSSEIN Obama carried 80% of the Muslim votes?  With all of his anti-Christian, anti-Jew and pro-Muslim actions, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him carry over 90% of the Muslim vote in November.

These two news stories reveal a growing trend in America.  The Obama administration is actively stripping Christians and churches of their constitutional rights, while Muslims can openly defy the law, the IRS and the US Constitution and they will not lift one finger to stop them.  In fact, they appoint judges who are now ruling on Sharia law over state and federal law.

If Obama is re-elected in November, I’m sure it will usher in the United States of Islam.

    Once again, the muslims are given a pass and permitted to do something that other religious groups are prevented from doing. More submission to sharia. and no surprise they would be promoting Ron Paul. IMO, we ought to vote for the person FEARED most by muslims and he doesn't seem to be that man. I have no doubt that all over America muslims are eating their falalfels with their fingers crossed, and prayers to allah, that Paul or Obama will be President after this coming election because either one will well-serve their purposes.

    BTW: I really have alot of respect for Paul..He's enormously likeable and is honest to a fault, regardless of who he is speaking to. I like that. I like his consistency and agree with a lot of his economic and constitutional positions, but... my problem with him is that he is a dove.....an appeaser...someone who EXCUSES the behavior of jihadists. This tells me that he knows little to nothing about Islam and what we are really facing with this enemy. And that makes him a poor choice for a Commander-in-Chief, especially in a time of war.

      He is more than willing to attack ANY country that is truly a threat to Americans, but with a legitimate act of war, not a military/industrial collaboration to fight wars without end. When war is declared, it has a goal established. That goal can be extended if the commanders in the field see that it needs to be. Not endless war that only burns up tax dollars and American military forces as the ultimate consumer. If he wasn't right on his position about this, do you think that G.I.'s would give him more funding than any other candidate.

        Fox...just sos ya know....I was against both wars. Even Afghanistan, where we were sure of the Al Quaeda connection. Since WW2, we've been engaged in nation building, spreading democracy and POLITICALLY WAGED WARS and I"ve been against it all. We can't be the world's policeman and you can't spread democracy like spreading mayo on bread. You can't make anyone want to be free..the desire for liberty has got to rise up in men and they have to be willing to fight for it. and the quest for liberty is alien in an Islamic culture.

        As for my approach to terrorism: I've been seriously studying Islam with arab ex-muslims since 1999 and based on what I"ve learned I would have targeted Mecca and Medina, Islam's holiest cities, and given Saudi Arabia ( best buddies with Bush and the sponsors of terrorism) an ultimatum.....STOP the terrorism right now or see your cities bombed into dust. I would have gone for their jugular right off the bat because fierce determination is all they respect. Islam is the enemy and Quran-obeying muslims have declared war on the entire world. Sorry, pacifism is not my style.

        As for Ron Paul....have you even listened to his remarks about the Middle East....about Islam? He seems to know nothing about it and thinks that we should just apply the Golden Rule, play nice and that will make them stop. He does NOT understand that their PLAN is to rule the world....that accusing the USA of criminal acts against them is just a rationalization and justification for their attacks on us. If we did NOTHING but twiddle our thumbs and whistle, they would still try to kill us ....for THAT is what allah has commanded them to do. Appeasement NEVER EVER works with a bully.

        Why the military has given to his campaign? Weariness of war? Frustration with the way the war is being run? I don't know.

        tex....an appeaser is someone who continues to feed the crocodile with the hopes that he will be the last one eaten. Have you listened to Paul's rhetoric when he speaks about Islam? I think he is a decent, committed Christian, who truly believes that by treating people with respect and dignity, by behaving according to the Golden Rule, that they will change their attitude about you. In the eyes of Quran-obeying muslims, genuine and sincere gestures of friendliness and concern are perceived as the acts of an inferior person who is being submissive to them. While most human beings respond positively to a kind and respectful approach, jihadists do not.

        Muslims do not need a valid reason to attack us. Allah has commanded them to take over the world for him. That is a fact that Ron Paul doesn't seem to understand.

    I spent a year living in the middle east and I'm here to tell you the Quran is not just a guide for religion it dictates how you conduct your life and also rules for governmential rules like Sharia law. If a muslium follows the Quran totally then they should be deported because that means they are going to attempt to overthrow our country and institute Sharia law. If you do not convert to their so called religion then you are history per the Quran.

      Christianity is also a religion and a way of life. Unfortunately, or fortunately most Christians would be forgiving of a Muslim when they err. I do not believe a Muslim would return the ethic. So, what are we all going to do about this? My first question is simply----why do the Muslims leave their country and come here knowing our laws and culture? It would seem the intent is to intimidate and change our way of life....time to take action!

    The Muslims are not out of line for their visible support on the street. The church itself cannot endorse or provide support to maintain a candidate from the pulpit. Outside the church, individuals can speak for anyone they want. However, the church itself cannot participate in the recall process, nor provide money to affect the outcome of the process, If they wish to maintain their 501-c(3) status. The church or mosque can fund a PAC, through the rules established through the Federal government, which many religious organizations do to solve this. And there are many minority churches who openly defy the limitations anyway. Any political figure can speak from the pulpit, but the church cannot endorse the person or anyone else running for office. The law is vague and a political football, and the Muslims are taking advantage of it.

      According to the latest FBI reports, almost ALL of the mosques of America are led by jihadist-teaching Imams which encourage war on America. Encouraging support for a particular party or candidate is the least of our worries. IMO All mosques ought to be razed and Islam eradicated from America. There should be ZERO tolerance for it.       I think Guest was trying to present some logic; though I disagree with a couple of things. It is pretty darn obvious that black churches are "exempt" from the very same IRS rule that white churches are held to regarding politicking in church. It sounds like the case above is a ploy by the mayor just because the pastor is involved doesn't necessarily mean he is representing the church as an entity looking for the recall. But I would argue that if a corporation can institute a recall, then so can a church. Personally, I don't believe that a corporation should be allowed this either; since our government is supposed to be "of the people" - a person - a VOTER - must weigh in on a recall campaign. A business entity or some type can most certainly defeat most individuals when it comes to financial strength. I would also argue that while any political figure can speak from a pulpit - that should not be allowed in any church - but at the same time, it should be church policy - not the government's. I don't go to church for politics, I go to worship. If a church wants to host a politician - fine - but don't do that at a worship service for GOD.

For this country (USA) that all changed with the so called progressive relativistic evolutionary philosophy’s of Darwin, Niche, and Marx, which Santorum, Obama, and Romney have “already” demonstrated the willingness to embrace. Neither possesses fundamental understandings of liberty for individuals nor do they have histories that would suggest comprehension of “free-market” principals.

    Why don't the churches give up their non-profit status and start speking out against this muslim in the Oval Office. I have asked my church authoriities to take a vote of the congregation but they refused too. They are total pansies so I have to start at the grass roots. Maybe if we have to taxes then they won't have the money for their frivulous spending.

    Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Al Gore and Jesse Jackson have all openly campaigned in predominently black churches without the tax status of any of these churches being questioned. The real hypocrisy and double standard that exists is between conservative and Republican involvement in churches which is never allowable and liberal Democrat use of churches which always is.

    Democracies fail because majority rule is contaminated socially, intelectually,emotionally and when secularism robbs the democracy of faith in the Creator God, it becomes blind to reason. That is where America is today. God is irrevelant and deemed unnessary. Government has replaced him. The citizenry look for someone to lead them in a way that pleases them; therefore the leader they choose is one with promises that "tickle" their ears. How else would Obama be in our WH. He was not constitutionally qualified, but those responsible to require him to be qualified, failed to do so. He now controls our DOJ, our FBI, our Military and our Supreme court. He blames congress for every thing that goes wrong and, by what ever means nessary, will probably be elected to serve another term.

    I thought that when people who enter into the religious arena they take a vow of loyalty to God and the church. They gave up worldly goods/possessions when entering into this vow. That was clearly the modus operandi d'jour. I am seeing more and more clergy enter into a political arena which I think is incorrect, according to the vows they take. I know this is what "in olden days" the Catholic church used to instill, but todays standards do not reflect those vows i.e., moving guidlines and rules, man first, Not God! We have an overabundance of chaos and distention and racism to its highest level because there are no concrete rules being followed. Now, we have disstention because of allowing Muslim's exception to rules and enforcing same on non-mulsim clergy. Double Standards to say the least. Very dangerous.

Jesus of course, knew that ALL law has its foundation in the MORAL CODE (the Ten Commandments were both a political foundation as well as moral) and he confronted these hypocrites regularly.     If you could look back at least a couple years in the comments column, I have been saying that this illegal, muslim kenyan, who is anti-American should be IMPEACHED NOW because by this November's election, it may be too late. I pray that someone or somebody get the IMPEACHMENT process going before its too late, its a must in order to save America as we knew it. Even now, former ways of live are beginning to disappear! So let's go, get this muslim out of office along with some of his muslim appointments to his staff and those two recent appointments to the Supreme Court. They need to go as well.       There are very many things that would legally warrant impeachment.  There are two problems with that.  We saw both with the Clinton impeachment.  

      1.  No matter what supporting evidence is involved, the Democrats and media will proclaim the House of Representatives are using a vast, right-wing, partisan assault in voting to impeach.  He could be proven to have broken one out of every three federal laws and there would still be political support behind him accusing Republicans of acting out of racial hatred and political malice.  Of course, Republicans actually had the courage to act with Clinton.  Today, their are either too pragmatic (see item 2) or just plain cowards.

      2.  The Senate is the jury for an impeachment trial.  Just as we had Democrat Senators getting up on our TV screens during the Clinton impeachment saying that they had no doubt that he was fully guilty of the crimes for which he was being accused, but didn't think that his guilt should be a basis for removing him from office.  With a Democrat-majority senate, we could prove that he tortures puppies and kittens on the White House front lawn, daily, on TV, while cheating on his taxes and forging passports for terrorists to enter this country (just an example, I do not believe that he tortures cute, furry animals OR forges terrorist passports) and not get a conviction.  The fact that no amount of guilt on his part will result in his removal from office by the Senate, it contributes to the House not taking action against him for the illegal things he has, or may have, done.  

      3.  For what we all know or think we know, and for all that we have evidence to support those beliefs, AG Eric Holder will NEVER appoint an independent council to investigate anything Obama-related (unless it is Obama-opponents), even if Congress orders it.  Just as he would not pursue a case against the Black Panthers, a case the US government had ALREADY WON IN COURT, he will never take any actions against Obama or any of those Obama favors.
