Rabies and the 2012 Elections

After one of the mildest winters in years for most of the nation, spring is starting with a noticeable rise in two things that can be dangerous and annoying.

In the past week, I’ve seen numerous reports of incidences of rabies from New Mexico to South Dakota and from Kansas to New Jersey.  Rabies can be spread by raccoons, skunks, rats, mice, bats and other furry animals.  However, the real culprit is not necessarily the host animal, but the fleas that feast on them.

Fleas are blood sucking insects that carry diseases such as rabies and infect one animal after another.  Every time they bite through the animal’s skin and tap into the blood supply, they spread the deadly virus.  Once an animal or person is infected with rabies, it is nearly 100% fatal.  That’s why it’s so important to keep your pets vaccinated.

As I was reading all of the different reports of the rabies outbreaks, I couldn’t help but think of how they have erupted in unison with the heated up 2012 elections.  Just as the Obama and anti-Obama commercials started popping up on our TVs, more reports of rabid animals also have suddenly surfaced.

The overly mild winter means that there will be an overabundance of fleas, ticks, ants, flies, spiders and other annoying pests this spring and summer.  Likewise, in a presidential election year, there is also an overabundance of politicians running for office with all of their TV, radio and roadside ads.

It also struck me that both involve blood sucking parasites that feed off of others.  In politics, many of the people running for various offices come across like blood sucking parasites trying to suck every penny out of your pocket.  Their commercials often become more annoying than being bitten by fleas and if you don’t protect yourself from them, the results can be almost as deadly.

Another comparison is the madness induced by rabies - the same madness that drives millions of "rabid" voters to vote for the democrats who are destroying America.

    • KevanRowlee

Yo, Bobseeks.... as if voting for the Bush clone Romney isn't also madness.   Stop the insanity, vote for Ron Paul on what ever ballot he is on.

The real reasen that this posting is trying  hide where all these extra insects are coming from is this..  The earlier and warmer weather we have  been experiencing for the last 10  years has   been great news for insects, rats, mice ,cockroaches, termites, mosquitos and many other destructive pests  due to global warming. And if this trend  contunues things are not going to get any better. Worse is a better predictlion.

Not to mention the longer growing seasons which creates more food to feed the Earth's growing masses in third world countries. The U.S. already feeds 3/4 of the world's population in some manner.

This still does not negate the fact that the author is ignorant of the means by which rabies is spread.

So what you are really telling us is not to get to close to the great unwashed better known as OWS as they might have some thing catching besides their stuipidity.    And do not get bit by one of them.

"However, the real culprit is not necessarily the host animal, but the fleas that feast on them."

This is just patently FALSE. Fleas and mosquitoes DO NOT SPREAD RABIES.

Rabies is spread through contact with an infected animal's saliva through touch or being bitten. The virus may enter the system through the saliva getting on an open wound or through mucus membranes such as the eyes, nose, or mouth.

This author is simply ignorant. S/He needs to do some basic -- and I do mean basic, very basic -- research on the subject of which s/he writes. A simple visit to the website of the Mayo Clinic or Centers for Disease Control would greatly edify this ignorant author.

FYI - the author has worked directly with rabies control and rabid animals.  Human get rabies from being bitten but the animals generally get rabies from fleas with bite an infected animal and then jumps to a new host.  I've actually tested infected fleas to determine rate of rabies virus they contain.  In areas where there is an increased number of fleas with rabies virus, the higher the incidents of rabies in the animal population.  So perhaps the author does know what he is talking about.

Then why is this horrible fact unknown to the Centers for Disease Control and the Mayo Clinic? Their websites do not offer any caveats on the method of transmission.

In fact Mayo's entire method of transmission description is:

"Rabies infection is caused by the rabies virus. The virus is spread
through the saliva of infected animals. Infected animals can spread the
virus by biting another animal or a person. In rare cases, rabies can be
spread when infected saliva gets into an open wound or the mucous
membranes, such as the mouth or eyes. This could occur if an infected
animal were to lick an open cut on your skin."

The CDC's description of infection paths is here:

        http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/transmission/exposure.html

Should not the author -- apparently you -- make every effort to make them aware of their lack of knowledge on this subject so they can alert the public to this heretofore unknown method of transmission?

Isn't the withholding of this devastating and vitally important information an indicator of an ethical lapse on the part of the author -- apparently you -- and the person cited in your post? Millions could die due to your silence.

This requires large leap of as of yet unproven faith. Fleas may contain markers for rabies from feeding off infected host but that does not as of yet make them carriers. Their is no known outbreak of rabies in larger mammal populactions from insect host- zero as of yet.

One thing that disturbs me about the Godfather Politics page is that there is no way to communicate with the authors who post here, or the website itself, when blatantly false information is being disseminated.

How does false information get corrected if the authors are incommunicado and hide behind nom de plumes?
