Gun and Baseball Bat Control in Great Britain

Great Britain has strict gun control laws. Advocates of gun control believe that these laws cut down on violence and crime. Such laws only empower lawbreakers. Gun homicides were low in the United Kingdom even before gun control laws went into effect. This does not mean that there hasn’t been any gun violence since these laws went into effect in 1977. “Over the course of a few days in the summer of 2001, gun-toting men burst into an English court and freed two defendants; a shooting outside a London nightclub left five women and three men wounded; and two men were machine-gunned to death in a residential neighborhood of north London. And on New Year's Day this year [2002] a 19-year-old girl walking on a main street in east London was shot in the head by a thief who wanted her mobile phone. London police are now looking to New York City police for advice.”

Gun control has had an impact elsewhere: a dramatic increase in other violent crimes. “For example, comparing London and New York, cities of very similar population and demographics, the rate of assaults and robberies is over six times as high, and 7 or 10 times nationwide (depending on statistic used).” Compared with the United States, “the United Kingdom has a slightly higher total crime rate per capita of approximately 85 per 1000 people, while in the USA it is approximately 80.”

On a June evening two years ago, Dan Rather made many stiff British upper lips quiver by reporting that England had a crime problem and that, apart from murder, “theirs is worse than ours.” The response was swift and sharp. “Have a Nice Daydream,” The Mirror, a London daily, shot back, reporting: “Britain reacted with fury and disbelief last night to claims by American newsmen that crime and violence are worse here than in the US.” But sandwiched between the article's battery of official denials — “totally misleading,” “a huge over-simplification,” “astounding and outrageous” — and a compilation of lurid crimes from “the wild west culture on the other side of the Atlantic where every other car is carrying a gun,” The Mirror conceded that the CBS anchorman was correct. Except for murder and rape, it admitted, “Britain has overtaken the US for all major crimes.”

The most recent riots in London indicate that lawless people will use any means at their disposal to force their wills on others. Three men were killed by an automobile, people were openly beaten in the streets, and business establishments were looted while others were burned. Store owners had no way of protecting their property. The people doing the looting, and they weren’t just the poor and disenfranchised (a millionaire’s daughter, a ballet student, a musician, an organic chef, a university graduate student, a law student are just some of the types of people arrested), knew that they would meet little resistance. “In reality, the English approach has not reduced violent crime. Instead it has left law-abiding citizens at the mercy of criminals who are confident that their victims have neither the means nor the legal right to resist them. Imitating this model would be a public safety disaster for the United States.”

So what does the law abiding citizen do? He shops on Amazon for baseball bats! He can’t buy guns, so he gets the next best thing, a metal version of the Louisville Slugger. In a 24-hour period, sales for baseball bats on Amazon UK rose by more than 6000 percent.

Defenseless citizens were also buying police-style telescoping truncheons. (The spring-loaded ones are illegal.) The Guardian reported the following: “Amazon has removed several police-style telescopic truncheons from sale on its site as soaring sales of truncheons, baseball bats and other items that could be used as weapons sparked fears of vigilantism in the wake of widespread rioting.

So now, law-abiding citizens are even more defenseless. They can’t even order a baseball bat on line to protect themselves from roaming thugs. Maybe it’s time they whittle down their cricket bats. Paul Joseph Watson writes: “Just like gun control, banning baseball bats only disarms the public and creates victims. Criminals will always be able to acquire weapons of any description because they do not obey laws. Leaving Brits defenseless will only embolden the rioting hordes.”

    Ain't socialism and total government control over your safety great? I can't believe we don't have such amazing laws here! I mean could you imagine? Never having to worry about defending yourself, the government right there to serve your protection needs. No citizen will ever need a gun, knife, or bat again. Mmmmm.... utopia.

    While they're at it, they can provide us health care for the emergency injuries that come from being unarmed; feed us and clothe us when we get robbed because we can't defend our homes, or just for the heck of it. While they're at it they can promote all religions equally... except for those nasty, horrible Christians. Don't need their kind anyway.

    Gun and bat control are great... for the criminals. Look at Mexico for a great example of gun control. People die everyday there because they're unarmed and can't defend themselves. Washington DC isn't any better. History proves that gun control only controls law-abiding citizens. What's next? If the governments of the world try to control everything that can be used as a deadly weapon, there will be nothing left.     This is a great example of how intelligent our forefathers where. In America a citizen has the right to protect their home, business, and property from criminals. In England criminals can actually sue you for any harm they come to when atemping
    a crime against you! I America, a State Governor can call out the National Guard or State Militia if our ARMED police officers
    aren't enough. The 2ND Amendment is for this very purpose. Those who oppose it side with the criminals and crooked politicians hungry for power over the people. Buzzy

      Gave you a thumbs up for most of it but in Calif. Over the last 15 years there has been a handful of cases where the intruders were shot for breaking in and the courts sided with the crooks.One case that stands out is the one where a guy came in thru the skylite to burglarize the home and the owner shot him 5 times.He was paralyzed from the chest down. the owner lost in court.

          You are right ExAgraDriver, but the family survivors of the thief do sue in civil court. This is because the Progressivist politicians in Sacramento declared by law, years ago, that only in the event against immediate personal threat of death to yourself or your loved ones can lethal force be used. Personal property is deemed less valuable than the thiefs' life. You catch the thief with his leg out the window exiting your home with your property under arm, you can't shoot him. Very in tune with english practices, eh?

        You need to move to Texas man ! Castle doctrine will protect you every time if they are in/on your property and intend to harm you, and you are in fear of your life, then you're OK if you protect yourself/family or property. You can even own a firearm without a license, but if you intend to carry you still must have a CHL. Texas has one of the strictest CHL requirements and it's not cheap, but well worth it.

    The subjects (citizens) in the UK have to learn to take a stand at election time. Vote for MP's that will change the gun laws and make a big noise of it. I realise that Parliment has to overcome the House of Lords but with the way things are and getting worse I believe it is doable.

      Subjects is the correct description of the people of Great Britain as well as Australia and all of the sphere of the British influence. The difference here in the United States is that the people that founded this country understood that the people would be disarmed and disabled if they did not have a Bill of Rights, that was a fundamental requirement of some of the folks that were principles in the founding documents. Some of those rights are termed unalienable rights granted by God, and that speaks to both the religiosity of the folks at the time as well as their feelings about being able to defend themselves and their property. Thank God for them, since not all of them felt that way, there were those, like Alexander Hamilton that were Federalists, and did not believe that the people should have any power granted them!

      After the British were disarmed a government official said "now we have our subjects right where we want them". They do have them where they want them; at the mercy of the lawless and the Muslims infesting their island. I won't go into what causes their 'stiff upper lip' here.

    I love it. You cannot buy anything with which you can defend yourself. The assumption is that you will use it as a vigilante. How about waiting until that happens and then worry about it?

    Heaven forbid that the citizens manage to do what the police fail to do. And how bad is it that someone will fight back and beat up the attackers? We cannot have that, now, can we?

    One might get the impression that they are protecting the attackers and looters AND perhaps what is happening is what they want. Can you say "police state"? "Curfew for all"? "All rights and legal recourse suspended"? Looks promising.

      I am far better off killing someone who threatens my life and have to face a judge and 12 jurors later, instead of myself being killed and the killer still loose to do it again.

    For the protection of the citizens (looters) all citizens (not choosing to loot) are to be in their homes by 6 pm daily, sitting in their living rooms in handcuffs supplied free of charge, this week only, by the police. Anybody (handcuffed) being rash enough to attack another citizen (looter) will be prosecuted to the full extent if the law, if not killed already by the other citizen.
    To minimize violence, all citizens (not choosing to loot) are directed to leave the doors to their homes and businesses unlocked.

    The only person with the authority and responsibility to defend you and your family is YOU. The government (police) can not be everywhere and they are not really empowered to protect you, they are empowered to maintain the peace. They are great at filling out the papperwork later.

    I hope a lot of folk here in the USA read what is happening in the UK and hope it will awaken them to the fact that a disarmed public here would be a total disaster. We have the second amendment for a very very good reason that we can defend ourselves against criminals or against a government which has run wild and abandoned our constitution!

    Knives are hugely regulated in Great Britain. In fact they have locked tubs on the street where citizens can voluntarily dispose of their knives and furthermore lockback knives are banned. Dinnerware knives are the subject of much debate in their government because they want to ban any knife with a sharp end.

    Guns, knives, and now baseball bats. Must be wonderfull to be easy prey for perps in the U.K.

    The UK has had its head in the sand for many, many years. For a long time the police didn't carry guns. The government finally made a partial change in that area and now some police can carry guns. The police can not even defend themselves, let alone protect the citizens. Did you hear about Norway? Again, no guns, and the lone 'security' officer on the island was not armed and was one of the first to die! The UK needs to wake up before it's too late. The recent riots should be that warning they need to heed.

    Everyone should know by now is that guns don't kill people,people kill people! Put a gun on the table and leave it alone and you will see it won't fire on its own. Gov't wants locks on guns and in lock boxes citing child safety but doesn't do you any good when someone breaks in.Use the gun on a perp and you'll be the arrested for not having the gun secured.

    Don't just sit there. Join the NRA, the GOA (Gun Owners of America), Second Ammendment Foundation, The Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear arms and a local gun club. Do something. Above all remember human life is sacred. Thus, lethal force is only justfied to protect human life and only as a last option.

    My several guns have been faithful and obedient. My wife and I recently went on a 2 week vacation and when we returned not one of them had killed anyone or been involved in a crime. It's really true - guns don't kill...

    I can't Help what has happen in the UK, but I can in the US of A, and I believe there are more than just a hand full of NRA members, so unless Obama or some other Prez call for marshall law, then I can't see that happening. Now, I could be alittle nieve in believeing that, But I can't see our Country doing the same as the UK, and I hope I am right. This is why all Gun owners MUST support the NRA, they are our only means of first strike, and that is thru communicating with our politicians, if that doesn't work, than America we have no other choice, but to defend our constitutional right.

      In essence, if voters had to take an I.Q. test, combined with a comprehension test, Obuma would of never got elected. I often said that only wage earners, who pay taxes should vote. Given our current crisis in America, Obuma should be outta there, by a huge margin, BUT, those non-workers, and government dependent idiots will still vote for Obuma, as all they care about is their free checks, free medical coverage, rent assistance, and all the other freebies they can get.
