Arizona Governor Signs Religious Freedom Bill to Counter Obama’s Contraception Mandate

This past January, President Barack Obama announced his contraceptive mandate that would require all employers to obtain health insurance that would provide coverage for contraceptives, abortion drugs and sterilization and offer it to all of their employees.  The mandate was written in such a way that even religious institutions (churches, schools, ministries) would be required to furnish the controversial coverage even if it violated their religious faith.

In their attempt to appease the outrage and backlash from Catholic and Protestant organizations, the Obama administration provided a religious exemption.  However that exemption was very limiting as it only applied to an institution that was a non-profit and that the majority of its employees and the people they served belonged to the same religious affiliation.

The feds religious exemption was so tightly written that many religious institutions including colleges, universities, schools and ministers would not be able to qualify for it.

Arizona State Representative Debbie Lasko and State Senator Nancy Barto re-introduced HB 2625 into the Arizona legislature this year to help protect the religious freedom of a number of organizations within the state.  HB 2625 broadens the religious exemption to include ‘any organization whose articles of incorporation state a religious motivation and whose religious beliefs play a significant role in its operations.’

As Governor Jan Brewer signed the bill into law last week, she said,

"In its final form, this bill is about nothing more than preserving the religious freedom to which we are all Constitutionally-entitled."

Ron Johnson, executive director of the Arizona Catholic Conference responded to Gov Brewer’s signing of the bill by saying,

"We're absolutely thrilled that Gov. Brewer signed this important religious liberty legislation after many years of battling over this issue in Arizona and now across the country.”

"It's also a very good time to unite with people of other faiths on this bedrock issue.  If we don't do it now, we're going to see much more serious erosion."

Hopefully other states will follow Arizona’s lead and pass similar measures to protect the constitutional freedom of all religious organizations and help prevent them from being forced to do things that are against their faith.

    Go, Arizona!!! Go, Gov. Brewer!!

If only more states and more Governors had the balls that AZ and Brewer have.

Isn't that where Sheriff Joe is from? Arazona, a state of values...I'm thinking of moving there.

      • fedupgranny

I am originally from Ohio and I moved to Arizona 14 years ago. By the Grace of God, I would not live elsewhere. I live in Tucson, a really great place!

I am contemplating relocation to Arizona...this story just may cement my decision. Gov. Brewer is a breath of fresh air compaired to Gov. Moonbeam and The Peoples' Republic of California, where I've lived for quite a while.

      • True North

Sheriff Joe is from Springfield, Mass.

  • Screeminmeeme

Once again...Hurray for Arizona , which is ahead of the pack in their opposition to the Obama administration garbage. The fact that Obama/Holder have been so hell-bent on going after Arizona on a number of issues tells you that Arizonians are doing something right.

Brewer has been immovable in her stance on illegals and state's rights and she's despised by Obama.....something to be worn as a badge of honor.

Once again Arizona take the lead that we all should follow and fight the good fight against the marxist in the White House. Both Jan and Joe are owed a great amount of thanks for standing their ground and not giving in to pressures from Holder or the 9th circuit court.

Why aren't the muslims up in arms about this new law? Why are they being so quiet?

Frankly I wish Governor Jan Brewer would run for president or someone like her. She's got balls, excuse the pun, and nerve and stands up for what is right. We need someone that is not afraid to do what needs to be done to straighten this country out. Tough steps are going to be needed to get us out of this deep deficit mess and some programs and entitlements are gonna have to go or be reformed. There is a huge amount of waste in government that would probably pay our deficit in full if only someone would crack down on it. If not president, she would make a good vice president. My opinion only.

    • Mainman12

I'd like to see her as Romney's VP. And Sheriff Joe should be his/our Attorney General.

We might have to find a place for Jan Brewer in the new administration. I mean a place other than token. I mean a place where she would be allowed to exercise her idea of freedom. Between Jan and Joe, Arizona is staying ahead of the thug in DC.

  • TheGizmo51

She will wind up doing a lot of harm before everyone discovers that she is very, very sick.

  • pduffy

The 'mandate' was required to receive 'federal funding' for those so-called religious hospitals. Nobody was being 'forced' to supply contraception services, except to get federal money. This is why you don't get in bed with government in the first place and take their blood money. Just refuse it! This bill will do nothing to change the federal requirement. If they don't comply, they won't get the funds. All they had to do from the beginning was stop accepting federal blood money and the problem is solved, but they don't have that kind of character. They want the money without the strings attached.

    • Ben

Clearly you haven't been paying attention. This mandate isn't about performing abortions, it's about forcing employers to pay for their employees' abortions.

      • pduffy

Only if they take 'federal' money. I could be wrong, but private insurance can still refuse to fund abortions if they are not 'federally funded'. It's the money that makes the 'strings' of the puppet. To cut the strings, you have to refuse the money.

It's amazing a small state like Arizona is out in front of our benevolent leade protecting first the sovereignty of th United States with effective protection of our borders and jobs with their immigration law and secondly the conservation of the United States Constition and the freedoms guaranteed by the first amendment.
Barak Hussein Obama is sworn to protect and defend the Constitution and yet it's him who has the weakest position with his decisions facing rejection by the justices of the supreme court.

WAY TO GO JAN & JO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also live in the Communist State of Maryland and fully agree with you - there's nary a single politician here with the nads to stand against Obamacare; I sure wish we had a Jan Brewer and a sheriff Joe here! Worse yet is the notion that even if the SCOTUS kills Obamacare I fear Maryland might just hold onto its own version of that evil law like Massachusetts.
But hey, if the do I'll be more than happy to tell Mini-bama where he can go and what he can do!

If people from other countries do not like Americas Christian values they are free to to return to whatever hole-in-the-wall country they came from. America IS a CHRISTIAN nation. We, as Christians have turned the 'other' cheek for too many years. muslims be warned; you WILL pay for your crimes against Americans.

    • Jimmy Meyer

Turning the other cheek does not mean we must go soft on what is right, but neither does it mean we can be vindictive, standing on rights. This is Jesus that said to 'turn the other cheek', not some governor. Let our light shine before men so that our Saviour will be glorified.

Please consider the words of Congressman Ron Paul:

"Strictly speaking, it probably is not necessary for the federal government to tax anyone directly; it could simply print the money it needs. However, that would be too bold a stroke, for it would then be obvious to all what kind of counterfeiting operation the government is running. The present system combining taxation and inflation is akin to watering the milk: too much water and the people catch on."

  • duckfude

Attention Governor Romney: Gov. Jan Brewer is the "man" for the VP job. She can take it straight to Obama and will be effective in focusing the debate where the Obama administration has the most weaknesses: JOBS, IMMIGRATION, STATES RIGHTS, ETHICS, LEADERSHIP, ETC. Jan Brewer for Vice President.

  • Ben

A good gesture, but too little, and now people will pretend the problem is taken care of because the squeaky wheels have been oiled. But even with this "fix", the health insurance requirement violates the First Amendment. The Bill of Rights doesn't say "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion which has religious text in its articles of interpretation, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof in institutions of religious teaching". It is supposed to protect the religious rights of all individuals, not just those companies with "Catholic" (or similar) in their name.

I frankly do not care about the opinions of people from other nations. it was the opinions and attitudes of those very nations that caused the massive influx from Europe and Asia, Africa and the Middle east to immigrate to the USA originally.
The abysmal record of the Obama administration towards the American people is rather like livng thru an undeclared war. His consistant attacks on our faith(s), on our culture, our values and our beliefs has been unrelenting and uninterrupted. This man most probably isnt a legal American citizen, and has gone to a great deal of effort to prevent anyone seeing his school records, his selective service records, his birth certificate, any of which would show if he is in fact a legal US citizen. A citizen would have no reason to spend the time, money and effort just over poor grades.
Voting, and participating in our elections must be both legal, and verifiable. No one who is not a US citizen should be allowed anywhere near a polling place. Picture ID's must be shown, and addresses must be verified. To ask less of a voter then we ask of a citizen when driving serves only one agenda. Those who wish to steal the American Election's agenda.
My Cheers to this Govenor, and her elected officials, they act and feel like Americans. For the first time since President Obama entered 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, I am proud of my country.

You talk about freedom?.Where does the Catholic church get off telling a woman what she can do with her body? The ones that try to dictate these rules to women are usually men. Where do they get that right? You Tea Baggers are all the same.NUTS!!!!

The church knows women have abortions--they just don't want to pay for it since it is against their religion--nor do they want to pay for birth control.  It's been that way for yeeeeeears.  Can we stop the name calling and be more civil.?
