Was Allah Originally a Babylonian God of Violence?

One of the first tales told to American students about Islam is that Allah, the Muslim God, is the same as Yahweh in the Bible.

It's something I never bought into even when I was a young and naive religious studies student in college. I suppose my childhood passion for medieval literature and the Crusades had inoculated me against the most egregious fantasies of Muslim propagandists. Plus, Islam is just too different from biblical religion for the alleged connection to be reasonable.

Consequently, there was never a satisfactory answer for the origin of the God of Mohammed, who seemed to just spring out of the mountain cave with Mohammed's visions and co-opt and rewrite the stories of the Bible, creating a perverted version of Judeo-Christian beliefs that calls on Muslims to convert or destroy the entire world.

Author Theodore Shoebat has an interesting theory, however, and like most "a-ha!" moments, it was hiding in plain sight, apparently ignored or kept under wraps by scholars.

Shoebat traces the earliest mention of Allah worship to Babylon, approximately 1700 B.C., in the "Epic of Atrahasis."

In the story told on stone tablets, a portion of the legends talks about a god named Alla, who is described as a god of "violence and revolution."

In one scene, the lesser gods grow tired of working for the god Enlil (or Elil) and rebel, led by the god Alla, who encourages them to drag Enlil out of his house:

"Then Alla made his voice heard and spoke to the gods his brothers, 'Come! Let us carry Elil, the counselor of gods, the warrior, from his dwelling. Now, cry battle! Let us mix fight with battle!' The gods listened to his speech, set fire to their tools, put aside their spades for fire, their loads for the fire-god, they flared up."

(One interesting note: Enlil in Mesopotamian myths is the god who was said to have grown weary of the noise made by humans and brought down a worldwide flood to get rid of them, a flood which was said to be survived by one man, Utnapishtim, and his family, who were spared because they had a boat loaded with animals and food. Some scholars see a connection to the biblical story of Noah.)

According to Shoebat, the cult of Alla came to Mesopotamia with the Akkadians, who originally migrated from Yemen, in the south Arabian Peninsula. He further reports that there is a Sumerian inscription identifying Alla with Tammuz, who was a god of fertility and the consort of Inanna, who is identified by scholars with Ishtar, Venus, Isis and other goddess cults. The various goddess cults are frequently identified with the moon, and Tammuz was said to be an archer, both of which points may help explain the crescent symbol of Islam, if Shoebat is correct.

Tammuz is mentioned in the Bible, in Ezekiel 8:14-15 (NIV translation): "Then he brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the Lord, and I saw women sitting there, mourning the god Tammuz. He said to me, 'Do you see this, son of man? You will see things that are even more detestable than this.'"

"Mourning the god Tammuz" refers to one of the annual festivals of the cult, in which the god was said to be killed. Being a fertility god, the "killing" was a metaphor for the summer and the annual dying of the crops. The other major festival had to do with the god's "marriage," which presaged a fertile year for farmers. Both festivals were apparently marked by rituals that included sex with the temple priestesses, thus their reputation would have been shocking to the Israelites.

That chapter of Ezekiel details a vision which in part shows the north gate of the temple, that is marked by the "idol that provokes to jealousy." The vision also describes idol worship being secretly conducted inside a room of the temple, and then it goes on to say, in Ezekiel 8:16-17:

"He then brought me into the inner court of the house of the Lord, and there at the entrance to the temple, between the portico and the altar, were about twenty-five men. With their backs toward the temple of the Lord and their faces toward the east, they were bowing down to the sun in the east. He said to me, 'Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a trivial matter for the people of Judah to do the detestable things they are doing here? Must they also fill the land with violence and continually arouse my anger?'"

Such fertility cults were common among the Canaanites and other peoples around Israel. The Bible mentions many times Asherah poles, which were a religious symbol of just such a cult.

Shoebat does not discuss the Bible passage about Tammuz or the chapter of Ezekiel, but it struck me, particularly the part about facing east, as being reminiscent of Islam and its practices and attitudes, given Shoebat's connection of Alla and Tammuz.

The Arabs, from whom we get Islam, consider themselves to be descended from Ishmael, Abraham's son by Hagar in the Bible. In Genesis 16:12, it says of Ishmael, "He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he will live in hostility towardall his brothers."

Another interesting point biblically speaking is that Ishmael's mother was Egyptian, which would make him a Hamite, rather than a Shemite (Semite). Ham was a son of Noah but was cursed by his father to be a slave to the descendants of his brother Shem (the Jews).

Studying the past can give us insight into today's violence in the Mideast.

Tad...Thanks. Great job of historical review and an irrefutable argument for the ignoble origins of Islam.

Of Ishmael, the father of the arab nations:

“He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all
    his brothers.” (Gen 16;12)

Abraham's prophetic words about Ishmael's descendents ring true. No matter where it exists, Islam is inevitably the catalyst for the relentless vilification of and aggression toward Israel, yet the endless dissension and antagonism among themselves can be even more striking. The bitter hatred between the sects....Sunnis and Shi'as in particular.... has led to more Muslims having been killed by other Muslims than by anyone else.

These people can't get along with anyone....including their own.

And the notion of peace is not only unlikely, but impossible...unless you are willing to abandon all that you know to be true, and submit to the diabolical creed which is Islam.

Why, we've all already been there, mon ami! And we've learned the truth! That a religion can be evil... That IS the truth, non? But that is a very dangerous idea, mon ami. If a religion can be evil, and we judge what has been done in the name of Christianity over the centuries, and what continues to be done in its name, it becomes very hard indeed to resist the conclusion that Christianity is an evil religion as well. Muslims worship the spirit of taqiyya and murder, therefore, Allah is the spirit of taqiyya and murder.

This is what Jesus told the jews. Read through verse 50. I stand with Him!!!

      • jnfm

You take the word of God out of context. Jesus was talking to the scribes and Pharisees. At that time in history, Jews received all of their guidance through their spiritual leaders. It was a volatile and confusing time with the corruption of the Suducee Priests (which have since died out) and the abundance of false prophets claiming to be the Messiah. The Pharisees were just beginning to take the Word of God out of the temple and directly to the people. The Jewish people listened to their spiritual leaders and were told to cling to their covenant with God, just as He had instructed them to do for thousands of years. Presently, there is not ONE time that the Christian Bible states that the Lord has turned His back on the Jewish people.
Read Revelations 7:1-17. There is no doubt that God has a specific and special plan for the Jews, and they will be saved. I suggest you stop using your misconceptions to justify your hatred. (I've read your vile comments in the past.) There is a very real war on God right now, and it's certainly NOT perpetrated by Judaism!

        • oldcoyote

You have to remember that when it is talking about "Israel " in the Bible, it is not talking about the " people or Israel (the Country)" today. Many people think it means Israel today which is not so. Israel mentioned in the Bible means "the people who followed God ". Jacob whose name was changed by God to Israel, is/was the son of Isaac.

"allah" is ID'd in Isaiah 14:14 which transliterates (original text) as "allah bamah ab damah elowyn", translating to (simplified) English as "I will climb above the clouds' heights and be like the Most High" (words of Old Nick).
If we go with the idea that the name was Babylonian "god" of violence, then you still have a demon behind it (and the master-demon Old Nick ultimately).

      • http://www.facebook.com/benfaust8778 Ben Faust

You can call two people by the same name, just as you can call two gods by the same name. It does not mean they are the same god. Many of the characteristics of the god spoken about in the Qur'an, as well as his teachings, conflict strongly with the characteristics of the God spoken about in the Torah and the Gospel. It doesn't matter what you call the god you worship; it matters only if He is the true God (which you can know only through the Torah, which Jesus said cannot lie, and with whom you can connect only through His Son), or a false god who says God can have no Son, and that Jesus didn't even die (making God's act of redemption void, and making Salvation impossible for you to gain -- the spirit of antichrist). In English, Allah is known to refer to the god of Islam, while Yahweh is known to refer to the God of the Bible. Thus the comparison in this English article to the name Allah, who also is a god of violence, commanding that "unbelievers" be converted or become slaves or be put to death, is quite valid.

        • oldcoyote

People can also call one God many different names, God in Arabic is pronounced " Allah" and is still the same one and only God of all creation. Every language pronounces God different just as they would pronounce Ben Dumbass Faust differently.

    • oldcoyote

RIGHT ON but God is called Allah.

      • http://www.facebook.com/conrad.gabbard Conrad Gabbard

Allah: Arab Moon God of the Quraysh, worshiped parallel to the God of Abraham for at least five generations before Muhammad was born. Mohammed’s deceased father, Abdullah (meaning slave of Allah) was consecrated to the moon god, thus the name. Evidence: Islam’s moon symbol, continual adherence to the Lunar calendar and ritually checking the moon’s presence. Nowhere in the Jewish Bible or the Christian Bible is the name Alah or Allah used for the name of the true God. Neither textually nor historically are Allah and Jehovah the same as Islam claims.
Mohammed, however, has the most minute and extensive writings on his words and deeds of any historical charecter, enabling several psychiatrists to evaluate him. One exampe: Dr. Masud Ansari, in Psychology of Mohammed: Inside the Brain of a Prophet, calls Muhammad "the perfect personification of a psychopath in power." Muhammad had an unhinged paranoid personality with an inferiority complex and megalomaniac tendencies. The other studies offer no serious contradiction,

All major religions link in some way to the Noah story in The Bible. This tells us the global flood actually happened, and that the Earth is relatively young. Despite what they'd have you believe.

    • NM Leon

Zoroastrianism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Islamism don't have a great flood, and neither did the pantheons of ancient Greece and Egypt.

      • http://my168project.com/ Matches Malone

Clearly, you didn't read the above article, as the link to Islamism is clearly spelled out. Of the others, I'd really only consider Buddhism as a major religion.

So, I misspoke, and should've said, 'most.'

        • NM Leon

Perhaps you should re-read the article:

"(One interesting note: Enlil in Mesopotamian myths is the god who was said to have grown weary of the noise made by humans and brought down a worldwide flood to get rid of them, a flood which was said to be survived by one man, Utnapishtim, and his family, who were spared because they had a boat loaded with animals and food. Some scholars see a connection to the biblical story of Noah.)"

Islam does not have a flood story.

      • Devasahayam

Wrong on the Parsi. They have a flood-myth, and a personage Jamshed whom Ormazd gave orders to build an ark. Like Noah, Jamshed also got drunk -- but that's where it diverges. Noah died a natural death (at age 950) while Jamshed was attacked by Zohak (incarnate of druj Azidahaka, a favourite of Ahriman) and murdered (sawn asunder) and his daughters imprisoned until Feridun released them and imprisoned Zohak.
        Probably wrong on all points!

Zoroastrianism was destroyed by Islam a good while ago, so now we really only know the name but have no idea what this religion was about.

          Neither, I am a Christian.

Christ never lied and spoke only the truth; every word contained in the
sixty‑six books of the Bible is the Word of Almighty God. Are the Jews then
God's Chosen People as some "fogbound, lying, deceiving, Judeo‑Chrisian Clergy"
would have us believe? Far from it! Rather than being God's Chosen People, they
are Satan's Children! Let us turn for proof of this, to the eighth chapter of
John the 42nd verse. The Jews have just said to Christ, we are God's Chosen
People, God is our Father. Christ did not answer the Jews the way ninety‑nine
percent of our Judeo‑Christian preachers would do today. Rather, He said in the
42nd vers, "If God were your Father you would love me for I proceeded forth and
came from God. Neitherdid I come of myself, but He sent Me. Why is it that you
do not understand my speech. It is because yuo cannot hear my words." (Read
carefully the 44th verse) where Christ said to the Jews, "Ye are of your father
the devil and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the
beginning and abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he
speaks of a lie, he speaks of his own for he is a liar and the father of it."

      • Ulysse Grémillon

Actually Jesus was an Essene, and as everyone knows the Essenes were stoned out on hallucinogenic mushrooms. The various psychoactive drugs, including these two, induce a subordination of the self to the natural world and to the other living beings, which takes the form, in all religions, of preaching love for one's fellow humans. But alas, the Christian world today is stoned out on cocaine, the drug of self-centeredness, and it is driving the destruction of the planet - which, if one insists on putting a religious face on it, is the work of the Christian world. Just as Jesus came to set the Jews straight, perhaps Muhammad came to set Christians straight. But in any case, since the Middle Ages, Christendom has been on the path of destruction.

Is this the god you are referring to?

"For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai."

    Or this?

    "If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;
    Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;
Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him:
But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.
And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage."

The more germane reality of Allah can be found with Mohammed’s father, Abdullah, consecrated to Allah, meaning "the-god," as a child. Allah was the Arab Moon God of the Quraysh, worshiped parallel to the God of Abraham for at least five generations before Muhammad was born, but promoted to "god of the universe" by Mohammed. Evidence: Islam’s moon symbol, continual adherence to the Lunar calendar and ritually checking the moon’s presence (Google it). Very interesting and even elucidating. One must be careful, however, in linking all creation stories to ancient myths and all accounts of supernatural returns from the dead to fables,, that one does not undercut the very ground on which he stands.
Universal truth, rightly understood, can be winkled out of all these stories and viewed, rather than as false worship, as preparation for the Truth that was to be revealed.
    Good stuff, though. Admirable scholarship.

His followers, the Manslims, would then use cryptic extracts of the Corecon to induct and subjugate more Manslims. The "moderate Manslims" would merely proseletyze and induct more Manslims. The "good Manslims" would engage in the same behavior as their "divinely inspired" founder, Manson.

All of the Manslims would promote themselves as belonging to a "religion" that was "peaceful" - usually while other members of the cult, er, "religion" were out and about killing and destroying in the name of their "god" and Manson.

      excellent analogy.

If "allah" was the God of Abraham there would be consistencies between islam and the Bible. There are not. It promotes lying, murder, tyranny, and force, does NOT recognize sin neither considers that God is a God of Love. Their "god" is a god of vengeance and death and lies.
In other words, "allah" is satan, trying to supplant himself as "God". And look at the results.

  • The Truth Sometimes Hurts

Mohammed was a pedophile who invented Islam as a cover story to justify his own personal perversion.

  • 1-Eddie-1

    Affirmative. Shoebat is correct.

  • AppraisHer

Islam is nothing but a plagerized, basterdized version of the Torah and Allah existed only in the insane mind of a murdering pediphile. All in all a filthy cult claiming to be a religion, but it's bloodlust appeals to Middle Eastern barbarians and people of similar ilk.

  • Obsidius

Why can't people be honest about this? Jews, Christians & Muslims have been slaughtering each other with impunity for centuries? Organized religion is a plague upon the human race. Yahweh, God and Allah are psychopathic, brutal, delusions. We are doomed.

  • Greg137

The pagan gods of old were angels who were banished from heaven back when lucifer rebeled against the Father... Islam is a religion under satan who is in turn lucifer... It makes sense that satan's followers were the kind of beings that would try to be worshipped by men..
Like their master they are all liars who became fake gods to human kind.. The ancient pagans used to worship the sun(lucifer) and the earth(mother nature(another fallen demonic angel) could she be Babylon?) Allah is worshipped with people bowing to the sun verifying that he could be Satan.. Satan=Lucifer=Ra=Helios=Allah The orient serve him as the dragon... Islam is a religion that also welcomes liars, and permits their followers to lie...
No doubt that Zeus(mountains) who was also worshipped by pagans must be the false prophet, and posidon[neptune](of the sea is the Beast or Anti-Christ)... Islams radical nature
is verification that they are nothing new...
As long as we keep our Faith in the Lord, He will guide and protect us..
By the Way of Father , Son, and Holy Spirit, may the LORD shield us in these evil days..

Fascinating, relevant piece. There may be one God of all creation, but that God is not spelled Allah.

There is also an Arabian moon goddess named Allhat. She dates back to the time of Hosea.

  • Roger Wolsey

Yahweh was originally a tribal warrior God. Look it up.
Allah is simply the Arabic word for God. Christians in Middle Eastern countries pray to and worship Allah.

Maybe, but it seems like an awfully long time between Babylon and Islam.
Yahweh/Jehovah has often been linked to the Sumerian god Ea (Ea - Weh/ Ea -Hovah) who was, in the Mesopotamian mythos, the god who whispered to Utnapishtim (Noah) to build an ark and who warned him that a flood was coming.
Ea was the god of the sea; and, though nothing specific links Ea worship to the city of Ur, the city of Ur was a coastal city at the time, and was where Abraham was born and (partially) raised.
The idea that Ea is Yahweh has a much closer temporal tie than that Alla is the Muslim Allah. Ea was still being worshipped as one of the primary gods of the pantheon at the time of Abraham, whereas no one was directly worshipping the same Sumerian gosd under the same names nearly three THOUSAND years later when Muhammad wrote the Koran.
There's also a direct, biblically cited, locational tie to Ur of the Chaldees -- a city where Ea was worshipped as part of the pantheon, if not primarily.
Anyway, either one is possible. The Ea/Yahweh connection has more going for it; but that doesn't necessarily make that connection true, either. Even if it were true initially, it is unlikely that Judaism/Christianity shares any of the same understanding of, or worship practices of a Chaldean Ea worshipper. The main connection being the story of Noah's Flood in the Bible and Utnapishtim and the Flood in the Epic of Gilgamesh and elsewhere.
If there were some connection in theology and worship between Islam's Allah and a Babylonian god "Alla"; I'd have to start watching "Ancient Aliens" and taking it seriously.

Allah is an idol, a false god, fabricated entirely to justify the sinful lust for power and total domination by the Hamites or Muslims with their most virulent hatred directed at Jews or Shemites. Mohammed was rejected by the Jews as a heretic whence his hatred for them intensified and he spent the rest of his violent life killing Jews by beheading them which in one case its documented that he personally beheaded upwards of 700.

It's ironic that Muslims refer to us as infidels, while their false god, Allah, can only come from the pit of hell. Only through brainwashing indoctrination from early childhood and a threat of death if anyone should depart from the faith can they maintain control. The leaders know better than anyone that a brief hint of the Christian faith is all that is needed for the flood gates of conversion to open and they lose control. That more than anything is the best indicator of the falsity of Islam.

    • Yuri

Muslims, for the most part, are Shemites. Hamites are black Africans who may or may not be Muslim, just as Shemites may or may not be Muslim.
Nice job legitimizing Islam back to Noah's sons.

  • Abbi

If you read the Koran, you will see that it is divided into two parts. The first part where the Prophet lives in peace with Jews and Christians and has one wife. The second part where the Prophet converts people by the sword and has many wives. Muslims believe in the God of Abraham, Moses and Jesus. They call Jesus Issa, and believe in the return of Issa as Christians do. If anything the Prophet converted people away from false Babylonian Gods to YHWH.

    • Yuri

If you're going to say "if you read the Koran,"; then you should probably read it yourself.

This is a very interesting article considering the season that it is presently in the political world, and the many underlying events that are currently happening overseas. Much prayer is needed for those involved for GOD to give victory to those who are really HIS, and for wisdom for the ones who need to come to salvation who are serving this country.

Interesting. I do want to correct what the author states in the second to last paragraph. Noah did not curse Ham. He cursed Ham's fourth son, Canaan. This is found in Genesis 9.

  • Ray

Our Creator must be saddened most fiercely right now. To watch His children doing such vile things to each other! The Old Testament Laws have been fulfilled through Jesus, yet the Muslims believe in the old Mosaic Laws like tooth for a tooth & death by stoning, etc.. The Koran (my spelling) was taken bits & pieces from the ancient Judean writings & spiced up by themselves ala by us, for us. Just my opinion.

  • http://www.missiontoisrael.org/ Ted R. Weiland

    “Ham
was a son of Noah but was cursed by his father....”

    This
is incorrect. It was Ham’s son Canaan (and his lineage, the Canaanites) who was
cursed by Noah. “The nakedness of your father” is idiomatic for incest with
your mother or father’s wife (see Leviticus 18 & 20). Canaan must have been
the offspring from Ham’s incestuous relationship with his mother. This is only
thing that explains why Canaan rather than Ham was cursed.

If Enlil/Elil is the Mesopotamian name of the God who caused the great flood, and Alla is the Lessor God/Angel who rebelled against Enlin, Then Alla and Lucifer would be one and the same.

Allah is the devil, satan, old scratch, old slew-foot, the great deciever, &c. Who else could be chief "deity" of a religion whose sacraments include murder, deceit, rape, and destruction and other uncivliized acts of savages?

CORRECTION: Allah is not a god named Alla according Theodore Shoebat. Actually, in Arabic language, Allah come from two words: "Al" and "Lah". " Al", in english, means "The" and "Lah" means "Him/Her". So, Allah actually means "The Him/Her" or "The Thing". If you're really looking for the truth, I hope this explanation will correct this article.
