I Care if Millionaires Pay More in Taxes and I’m not a Millionaire

With Republican friends like Bill Kristol, who needs Democrats to condemn? Here’s the latest from supposed conservative Kristol on raising taxes:

“I don’t think Republicans have the leverage or it’s worth using whatever leverage they have in maintaining rates at 35% instead 37 or 38%. I just don’t think it’s economically — as far as policy — especially if you can take it up to millionaires… A lot of Tea Party members don’t care that much if a couple millionaires pay that more in taxes, honestly.”

I care. Once you give government officials an inch on taxes and spending, they take 100 million miles. Kristol is a fool if he thinks that a tax increase on millionaires is going to fix anything. In fact, a millionaire’s tax will only embolden the Democrats to spend even more money to buy even more votes.

When the 16th Amendment was passed, most Americans were not affected by it. The incomes of couples exceeding $4,000, as well as those of single persons earning $3,000 or more, were subject to a one percent federal tax. One percent!

An income of $4000 in 1913, given the ravages of inflation, would be more than $88,000 in today’s dollar valuation. Most married couples didn't make $3000 a year in 1913.

In 1913, the top tax rate was 7% on incomes above $500,000 ($10 million in 2007 dollars) and a total of $28.3 million was collected. Less than 1% of the population paid federal income tax from 1913 to 1915. The people who voted for the income tax believed that only the “rich” would be paying the tax. Like today, the people who voted for the income tax voted because only other people would be paying it. Not them.

It’s no wonder that liberals are called Progressives. They are willing to settle on very small gains in legislation at the beginning so over time they can increase its effect. This has happened with every legislative act. We’ve seen the growth of every program. Can you imagine what’s going to happen to a healthcare bill of 2700 pages once the bureaucrats start interpreting it for us and the mandates keep increasing?

Benjamin Franklin said the following in 1789: “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” But this was before taxing power was handed over to the federal government. Will Rogers (1879–1935), humorist and social commentator, with more than a century of congressional foibles to evaluate, was more accurate: “The difference between death and taxes is death doesn’t get worse every time Congress meets.”

Liberals, and those who bow down to their decrees, contend that taxation is all about social justice. In their view, a group of philosopher kings is needed to determine what’s just. It didn’t work for ancient Greece and it won’t work today since those in charge don’t have a fixed moral standard to determine what’s just or unjust.

Walter E. Williams wrote: “Let me offer you my definition of social justice: I keep what I earn and you keep what you earn. Do you disagree? If you do, then tell me how much of what I earn belongs to you, and why?”

The problem is that other people are telling us what of ours belongs to them, and they don't have to tell us why. A political party that endorses the killing of pre-born babies doesn't care about stealing your money.

I am with the Tea Party and I like Bill Kristol, (most the time), but he hasn't any right to speak for all in the Tea Party by saying we don't care that much if the millionaires pay more in taxes. . Give the liberal an inch and they will take a mile! To begin with, in my opinion $250,000 is NOT RICH and they are not even half way there to becoming a "millionaire." And how long before that is lowered to $200,00 - $150,000? Besides, before they raise the debt ceiling, tax anyone anymore, they need to have big, Big, BIG, MEANINGFUL SPENDING CUTS on the table. None of this, raise taxes for now and we will figure out the Spending Cuts later crap that I've heard in the past couple of days. In case you haven't guessed it, I DO NOT TRUST THIS ADMINISTRATION AT ALL, NEVER, NO WAY!!!

    • ArmyCombatVet

Lets get real here, poor people don't create jobs, rich people do. Increasing the taxes on the rich, will do absolutely nothing in lowering the deficit and the unemployment rate in the private sector will be 75%! I find it especially comical when sleaze balls like the Secretary of the Treasury is a confirmed tax cheat! That a significant number of members of Congress have committed a litany of crimes including non-payment taxes. Charles the racist Rangel ring a bell! The answer is simple, the tens of millions of non-government wage earning taxpayers in America must cease paying any taxes and watch the dominos fall. No money, no government and government employees, the zombie work force, will be on the streets in no time. Wake up America, we now live under Soviet style tyranny with islamic termites chewing away at the foundation, with the ever growing population of mind numb progressives working tirelessly in a suicidal frenzy, to undermine our way of life. They are the true enemies of America and we can thank them, the legion of brain washed, indoctrinated, empty vessels that have voted to end our way of life!

      • Beepster

What was it they said? If you tax the rich at 100%, it would only pay 2-3 months of the INTEREST the US owes??? I think they need to tax ALL Demidogs, starting at 40% and working upward to 150%. Don't sweat the over 100%. England taxed at 105% on some not too long ago.

I agree and those socialists progressives think they are going to be welcomed in the Muslim inner circle. Well I got news for them, if they don't become 100% Muslim, they'll only be used by them until they are no longer needed, because they would still be infidels.

well believe this all will be paying more taxes it just goes that way . every person will be paying up to 3000 in taxes in obamacare it is all coming if he has to make it a executive order i do not uderstand why congress sits on its ass an niot challengall his orders it is taking away freedoms adding to his way of life . just as chaez did in venezula

    • http://www.facebook.com/lauralee.hensley Lauralee Hensley

Yeah, I agree, plus is that $250,000 earnings on just one individual, or is it on a family of four earning $250,000? See it's not as much money if it's a family of four, living in a higher priced area of the country, trying to pay for a home, trying to pay medical, trying to save money for retirement, trying to save money for their children's college education, trying to buy food, pay probably two car payments, trying probably still to pay back a student loan whether private or governmental. $250,000 is not as much money as some people think it is, if you're not living in subsidized or free housing, not getting free medical, not getting free schooling, not getting a free phone, etc............... Why would anyone try so hard to make $250,000 if it puts them in a higher tax bracket and actually makes them come out with less money in the end, then if they made $200,000. So, eventually those taxes get taken down to a lower and lower tax bracket. I mean a middle school student should be able to figure this out with the math skills they should be taught by now in their education. If they can't that's just another example of wasted tax dollars on an education that doesn't produce intellect.

With inflation give it 10 years 15 years tops and $250,000 will be minimum wage. In just my life time I have seen the cost of a movie go from $ .25 for 2 movies and a cartoon to $10.00 for 1 movie. New cars from $2,100 to $21,000. Why do we have inflation? Because of three things one minimum wage in cress Two Taxing the rich. Minimum wage goes up prices go up. Taxes go up prices go up. Three Government over spending on things like war, wail fare, ext. Inflation started in 1770 we had to pay for the civil war. It really took off in 1914. WWI and the central bank also called the Federal Reserve started. By the way the Federal Reserve is not!! part of the government. The reason it started Power!! The Federal Reserve needs to be removed. Hard to do when they control the money, that they print out of then air. So Inflation is governments hidden tax.

  • TheSunDidIt

Get rid of the income tax entirely or make it just; FLAT TAX ALL PEOPLE based on the "civil service" the state provides all people; if you must tax at all the incomes of people. But, these people LIE when they tell you the tax was higher in 1955. The MONEY WAS WORTH SOMETHING THEN folks. A millionaire of today is just a working stiff from the 1920's. That's what has happened to your money compliments of the Federal Reserve and BOTH parties spending attitudes and behavior.

  • ARMYOF69

WE THE PEOPLE , can only lose jobs if you take more money out of the rich guy's pockets.

We must get ahead of the liberals and socialists in strategy. They are going in for the final blow.

Unbelievable that we've let this happen! We need to gang up and start a revolution! After the election I was in shock. Today am angry as hell! I can't even stand to see Obama's face. How can so many people like this guy? There is nothing pleasant about him.

If we are going to have taxes, then everybody should have to pay, all the way down to someone making only minimum wage. Otherwise, you shouldn't have a vote or have any say in the way our taxes are spent. We should do away with the progressive tax system and go to either a flat tax, or a national sales tax where everyone who buys anything contributes. Quit discriminating against those that have worked hard for what they have. Isn't discrimination against the law anyway? Oh right, only if you agree with the liberal agenda.

If you took every cent from every millionaire - it wouldn't make a crap worth of difference to this budget deficit.

People that don't pay taxes must, and the spend side must change significantly.

Further - once you cripple the people with money (though it may feel great to the morons of the world) - it is all lost anyway.

What I can't understand is that Obama said that our taxes wouldn't go up one dime for Obamacare and now they say taxes are going up starting the 1st of January to pay for Obamacare. Could obama have lied again?

"The Sixteenth Amendment’s graduated income tax has been the means for funding an oppressive totalitarian government:

'The power of the state, acting through its governmental agencies, to tax its citizens, is absolute and unlimited as to persons and property. Every person within the jurisdiction of the state, whether citizen or not, is subject to this power, every form of property, tangible or intangible, stationary or transitory, every privilege, right or income which exists within the jurisdiction, may be reached and taken for the support of the state.

'This doctrine is involved in the general theory of the state. The state exists for the purposes of law, order, and justice; the institution of property, the preservation and security of life, liberty, and property depend upon the existence of the state. Inasmuch as all private ownership of property is postulated on the existence of the state, the state may properly exhaust all the resources of private property in the support and preservation of that existence; inasmuch as all privileges and liberties derive their value from the protection of the state, the state may take any share of the value of those privileges and franchises for its support, even to the extent of the whole value.' (James M. Gray, Limitations of the Taxing Power including Limitations Upon Public Indebtedness (San Francisco, CA: Bancroft-Whitney, 1906) pp. 29-30, quoted in Rushdoony, The Institutes of Biblical Law, p. 98.)

This absolute power to tax has increased the average American’s financial burdens and further secularized the country, putting her under Yahweh’s judgment. Yahweh’s law, including His taxing system, is perfect. Rejection of His taxing system is another renunciation of His divine authority over every area of life. The unbiblical tax stipulations of both Article 1 and Amendment 16 are formal repudiations of Yahweh’s sovereignty.

'Lawful taxation can only spring from lawful authority, and all lawful authority can only
originate from God. When taxes are levied by the state in violation of the Word of God, they are illegitimate and illegal [unlawful]…. All such taxation, because it takes property, liberty, and life in violence to Scripture, is an attack upon God. It is an attack upon God because all humanist taxation is the attempted robbery of God. It is the attempt on
the part of man to strip God of His ownership and control of that which He has created and which He upholds.' (Edward A. Powell and Rousas John Rushdoony, Tithing and Dominion (Vallecito, CA: Ross House Books, 1979) p. 39.)"

Well said. It is not about not wanting to help people (although some are just milking the system), it is about not wanting the government to keep growing larger. I can agree to a tax increase, but the government has to agree to a tax cut somewhere.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/George-Smith/100002522124238 George Smith

A tax increase would result in less revenue to the Federal Government because we are on the wrong side of the Laffer curve. We need to cut spending and cut taxes to stimulate the economy. Nothing else will work.

I agree give them more money and they aren't going to put it towards the debt that is already there. It won't reduce the costs of Obama Care to the individual citizen really. They'll just spend more if they get more. They couldn't balance the USA budget if their lives depended on it, and they probably don't care. They live in a make believe land where there will always be welfare checks, free medical care, subsidized or free housing, free phones and service etc., and the ones that aren't currently receiving such, believe it will be there should they ever need it. I however bank on reality and save myself sanity. They'll go to shake the Obama piggy bank one day and it will be empty, and even if they get some sense and take a hammer to the piggy bank, they'll find the expenditure of time and energy doing so futile, an empty bank is still an empty bank whether appearing to be whole or busted into a million jagged little pieces. I think these people depending on the government should take it upon themselves to learn skills and resources to take care of themselves and should instill in their children that attitude. An attitude of self accountability. Without self accountability on the part of everyone, then we won't see our government displaying it, they'll just use that poor me intellect to gain votes to keep those people stuck where they are in life.

  • Bobseeks

The only "fair" tax is a head tax. Everyone should pay the same because everyone benefits. A head tax would also decrease the demand for government because then the dimwits and scum who want more government would have to pay for it themselves. Our ultimate goal should be not to cut taxes, not to cut spending, but to cut government down to the point where spending and taxes are no longer an issue.

  • edc

How many business owners started their business so that they could make money for someone else and the government? I dare say NONE. How many of these businesses were started by "homeless" people? A middle class or low income person may be able to start a business, but he will hardly employ more than himself and family until he gets rich(under obama anything over $250,000 unless your one of them, then the ceiling gets a lot higher).Only the "rich" can afford to create jobs that pay enough to sustain himself and others and pay the goevernment goons(taxes) to stay off his back. Our government is the epitamy of self-absorbed bureaucrats.

  • http://www.survivingurbancrisis.com/ Silas Longshot

Yep, the original premise of 'income tax' was that tiny fraction on the 'rich' of the day. And was supposed to be TEMPORARY! Surprise! They lied!

I say there should be a liberal tax. Whoever is a liberal gets taxed out the ass.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002330046286 Paladin Firearms

Increasing the taxes on folks with an income of $250,000 will generate about $80 billion dollars per year.
As we are currently borrowing billions dollars a DAY, the impact that raising taxes on the 'rich' will have ZERO impact, NADA, NONE, on reducing our national deficit.
Obama skillfully created his own trap that he is only more than too willing to continue. He created class warfare as a tactic of his campaign.
He cannot admit today that raising te taxes on the rish will do little nex tto nothing against the increasing annual trillion dollar defecits that his administration has contributed to in these last four years.
He has painted a picture that since we are not fighting two wars we can use "that money" to pay for programs.

What he did NOT say is that we were BORROWING that money to support the war efforts. So in order to continue those programs we need to KEEP BORROWING.
SO... do the math here folks... we keep borrowing billions of dollars each and every day, increasing our national debt by a trillion dollars a year. Those are NEGATIVE numbers.
Then we offset that by a measely $80 billion dollars in revenues which is the positives.
Unless you missed that day in school TRILLIONS are bigger than billions and if you borrow more trillions and can only generate billions to offset what you borrowed; YOU WILL NEVER EVER BALANCE THE BUDGET.
    But distract and defer people.
Let's talk about the new govenment website Welcometo theUS.gov where we are giving advise to immigrants (legal and otherwise) on how they can immediately apply for government paid benefits that will contribute to our national debt.

    • Relabs

or you could say that raising the taxes a few points to where they were before the "temporary" cuts that Bush put into place will generate almost 1 trillion dollars over the next ten years....a fair dent in the debt from this one tiny move. Also, it will not change what those taxed at the slightly higher rate do....it will just mean that they will have a tiny bit less to pass on to their trust fund children

  • bill

Hi, When you consider that 'He who toils pays all taxes", taxing the wealthy or coorperations, they are considered just part of the 'overhead' and are just tacked on the rest of operating expenses and added to the products they produce. Ultimately the consumer pays them all and the part of society that labors creates all wealth. Just like a teenager that is funded by his parents, doesn't have a sense of value for the money that is handed to him, our government does not value what they do not labor for. The ONLY way the economy will recover is for government to spend less, much less. It is silly to think that I can spend my way out of my financial problems when I have no job.

  • kenhowes

The hell with the millionaires. The Republican Party fell on its sword for them, and at the end of the day they voted Democratic in a historic display of ingratitude and of the cynicism that has marked them all along. Fellow conservatives, have you not got it yet? The millionaires use us and throw us to the dogs when it amuses them! If Romney had carried Fairfield County and the Hartford suburbs in Connecticut; if he had carried the two Long Island counties, the Upper East Side, and the suburban counties north of New York City; if he'd carried Montgomery and Bucks County in Pennsylvania, and Chester County by more than a paper-thin margin; if he'd carried the suburbs around Cleveland--we'd be looking at a different election, and a MUCH different Congress. Take from the Democrats the three Long Island seats they hold; take from them the Upper East Side "silk stocking" district; take from them the three suburban districts north of the city; take from them the Fairfield County seat; take the North Shore and southwest suburban districts near Boston; take the Main Line congressional seat in Pennsylvania; take Rush Holt's suburban seat in New Jersey; take away the four wealthy districts they hold in Illinois; take away the MANY wealthy districts in California they hold--the GOP ought to have 260 seats in the House. But the rich hold us in contempt; we're stupid rubes who do their bidding while they take care of the party that they figure isn't in their pocket unless they back it. The rich wanted Obama? Let them eat Obama's taxes.

  • d1032

I will re-post what I have stated many times previously:
All this little "play king" can repeat time after time is: "everyone should pay their fair share" -now little "play king" just what percent is a fair share - give me a concrete number and don't waltz around the answer - and does "everyone" mean even those to whom you have paid out millions to secure their vote and will continue to pay them in perpetuity?
Are they going to have to pay a tax on the dollar value of their "freebies?"
And if anyone believes that someone making $250,000 a year is a millionaire then they are dead wrong - that is one heck of an income but REMEMBER out of that $250 thousand one has to pay at least 36% federal income tax ($90,000) which leaves you with $160,000 - if you live in a state that has a state income tax such as NY or CA, etc. there goes another 8-10% of the $250,000 (8%=20,000 - 10%=25,000) now you are down to $135-140,000 - still a very good income unless you live in NY or SFrancisco.
In short, people making $200-250,000 a year (and I ain't one of them) would require many years of that steady income to become a "millionaire" even with the best scenario.
"Baby Hitler" just hates industrious people - he will live in luxury the rest of his life and the taxpayers will be footing the bill - if he worked for a corporation they would have terminated him by the end of year two for incompetence.
He represents the perfect example of a parasite and we should be ashamed of ourselves for being 'suckered' into believing that our first 'black' president could end all the racist and devisivness that has permeated the nation - instead he has just made it worse by his own hand since he is one of the most blatant racists in the nation.

    • daves

The president's point has always been that spending cuts will mean that most of us sacrifice something to help bring down the deficit. These top income earners will not have to sacrifice anything unless there is a measly 2% tax increase. This is what he means by fair share.

I make less than $100k per year and I live a great life. A small tax increase on me would not change anything. Why do people think it would be so burdensome on people wealthier than me? Especially when most of those in that income group agree to the tax increase.

  • pistofftxpyr

This so-called "progressive" taxation is being administered in a way that is totally unconstitutional. It's virtually the same thing as prohibiting people with short hair from entering public buildings or requiring them to pay triple the admission fee as those who do not have short hair. This violates the fundamental concept of equal protection, pure and simple. For differential taxation to be lawful, the increased tax must bear a rational relationship to the value of government services to the taxpayers who are targeted (e.g., a special fishing tax imposed on commercial fishermen to support conservation efforts). This "lets appease the voters who want to penalize the rich" movement is a travesty.

    • Relabs

I believe you are wrong. I used to believe that the flat tax approach was the only way to go. Then I realized that you have to look a little closer. You can look at the dollar amount, the percentage of wealth, or the value that it has to the person being taxed. If you took the dollar amount, then everyone would be required to pay the same dollars in taxes regardless of their wealth. If you take the percentage approach (flat) then it sounds good until you realize that 20% to someone making minimum wages means they aren't going to be able to eat, where that same 20% to someone making 100 million means that won't have 20 million to pass on to their kids, but has no effect on the way they live their life, and is virtually painless. So, I believe that taxes should be as they are.....the more you make, the higher the percentage you pay. If you look at the wealthy and compare what they pay, after deductions it is less than a middle class family pays, and the middle class family really feels their contribution, where the wealthy it has almost no impact.

  • http://www.facebook.com/michael.hilton.773 Michael Hilton

The "give an inch" comment above is too important to ignore. Obama (and generations of liberals before him) have simpered about 'compromise' over and over again. When conservatives compromise with the left, the next thing that happens is they expect yet another compromise tomorrow. We've almost sold the entire farm with compromises. Now we're reaping the proverbial whirlwind. A "compromise" infers something mutually beneficial to both parties. If there's been anything beneficial to the right -- in recent years -- I'd like some knowledgeable person to fill me in on it.

What I am sure of is that I am really happy that people that think like you are a tiny fraction of the general population....and if you'd like to move elsewhere I don't think you would have problems getting donations for you to ....move along

why should anyone pay more or less taxes than anyone else?? the more money they make the more taxes they pay, why should anybody pay a higher tax rate depending on how much money they make?? now that is not fair, and I am certainly not a millionaire, and I do not see why someone should pay a diff. rate than any other american that is just wrong.!!!!

It should be a common slogan in our movement: "All taxes are regressive.!"

You tax the poor, you tax the poor. You tax the rich, you tax the poor because the poor pay the rich's taxes in higher prices and fewer opportunities.

We need also greater circulation for Frederic Bastiat's classic "What is Seen and What is Not Seen" (1850) as an antidote to tons of economic horse by-products.

In lieu of taxes, you should be able to do public service works. The more you do, the less you pay. Serve our country, get rewarded. Your time is too valuable to do some work? then pay the full amount. If you have time you can spend helping your community - it should be credited off your tax bill. Paid government jobs do not count toward this credit - it is a benefit for volunteering.

Where am I supposed to get my next job from if millionaires cut back on investment and creating jobs?

    • Relabs

Millionaires do not create jobs. People (middle class) create jobs by buying things. I don't care how much money you have, you aren't going to hire someone to make something or provide a service until the demand is there....and it comes almost entirely from the middle class. Most of the jobs are also not created by wealthy people, but small (read 1 or two people) that start a business and begin to hire as the demand for their product or service expands. The rich now control a higher percentage of the money in this country than they have in 100 years. They have plenty of money, and raising their taxes a few points to where they were before the "temporary" tax cut that Bush put into place will not change anything except that the Govt. will get almost 1 trillion dollars over the next ten year....a fair dent in our debt situation from that one tiny move.

The Leftards count on those of us who are not 'rich' by their definition to be apathetic about increased taxation of the wealthy.
Instead of encouraging people to aspire to success and excellence, they would rather create a society of drones and dependents who are willing to sacrifice individual liberties and suckle the government teat.

Who's going to pull the wagon when everybody wants to ride?

Exactly how do we define what is rich in today's world? A million dollars still sounds fantastic until we stop to consider what we could actually buy with it. That is when we discover that it will not realy buy very much. And exactly what greater percentage of their earned money should a millionair pay than the rest of us? Make the percentage high enough, steal enough of their money, and they will not be rich anymore. And what would be their incentive to go out and earn more if it was just going to be taken away from them?

Can you imagine what’s going to happen to a healthcare bill of 2700 pages once the bureaucrats start interpreting it for us and the mandates keep increasing?
First it needs to be said that those who write the rules will never finish, it will continue in perpetuity as a full life time job opening.
But to answer the question above. 10 pages is the rule of thumb for every single page the law makers send down to those who flesh the framework out.

People always focusing on the wrong things because they lack Yah's knowledge as revealed.

Acts 17:11: These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Kristol is merely telling the truth. Get on board folks. This country is a republic that includes "the public welfare". What part of paying one's share do you not understand?
The rich should share their wealth, not hide it in the Caymans.

In my pursuit of happiness is to do nothing and have millionaire's give me things!! Since this is in the Constitution I'm sure Uncle Sam agrees! It is the law right! In Washington they don't use simple common sense in their decision making...like corporations generate income for everyone. Make Corporations better at what they do and they will increase Government's income by employing more people....who will also pay me (Government) taxes..and if I (government) don't have to spend money on feeding, clothing and housing people...I have saved "and a Penny Saved Is A Penny Earned""""!! So why is it so hard for those butt heads in Washington to understand this truth??? It isn't!!! They have a bigger and better plan..that looks way into the future and sees things we don't!!! Their plans call for a Large Consumer Market in China...and as soon as the Chinese People (if nothing changes in 50 years), increase their standard of living we Americans can supply them with Microsoft programs..opps maybe not!! We will supply them something right Mr. Congress Person...don't tell me your wisdom doesn't see that we can't supply them anything and we are the final losers in all this mess you made!!! Get the picture.

I'm not a millionaire, either, but I think they already pay more than their fair (whatever the hell "fair" is) share. Just by virtue of the fact that we have a graduated tax system in this country, they pay a higher percentage than a lot of folks. The ones I want to see start paying taxes are the ones at the lower rung of the ladder. They use the roads / send their kids to public schools / etc.; they should be paying into the system that makes these things happen, even if it's only 1%. Hell, those w/ kids get a child / school credit but they are the ones using the schools. I don't have kids and so have never sent a kid to public schools, but I still have to "support" them. If you ask me it's the childless couples who should get the tax credit.
