Take Down the “Holy-Day Tree” and Go to Work on December 25th

Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee has defied lawmakers and decided that the state would have a “holiday tree” instead of a “Christmas tree.” Does Gov. Chafee realize that the word “holiday” means “holy day”? Not everybody is happy with the governor’s politically correct actions:

“One state representative called the governor’s politically correct tree a farce. ‘I’m sick of being politically correct,’ Rep. Doreen Costa said. ‘Nobody’s been offended by calling a Christmas tree a Christmas tree. If we have a Menorah in the State House, what are we going to call it — a candle with sticks?’

So Costa has decided to erect her own Christmas tree — at the State House. And she plans on lighting it on Dec. 6 — the same day Chafee plans to host the official ‘holiday’ tree lighting event.

“‘We’re going to sing Christmas carols and drink hot chocolate,’ she said. ‘And I’m going to make a sign — Christmas tree lighting to the right and holiday tree to the left. We’ll see who gets the crowd.’”

I realize that some government officials are substituting Happy Holidays for Merry Christmas and putting up Holiday trees instead of Christmas trees, but the trend is semantic smoke and mirrors.

The academics who substitute BCE (Before Common Era) and CE (Common Era) for BC (Before Christ) and AD (anno domini, “In the Year of Our Lord”), think they've gotten rid of Jesus Christ. A sharp student might ask, “So why do the years in BCE get smaller as they move forward and the years in CE get larger? What’s the significance of the middle point between BCE and CE?”

Even in this politically correct dating structure of BCE/CE is still dependent on the birth of Jesus Christ, as is understanding the dating of the United States Constitution:

“DONE in Convention by the Unanimous Consent of the States present the Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven and of the Independence of the United States of America the Twelfth.”

The use of "Lord" is a reference to Jesus Christ, and 1787 states how many years it was at that point in time from His birth.

Some enterprising lawyer should push this anti-Christmas movement with rigid consistency. Government employees should not be permitted to claim December 25th as a paid holiday because it would be an endorsement of the Christian religion. For this reason, public school children should have to attend school on December 25th, even if it’s called a “Winter Holiday.” A holiday is a holy day. “The governor defended his decision by arguing that it is in keeping with the state’s founding in 1636 by religious dissident Roger Williams as a haven for tolerance — where government and religion were kept separate.”

If this is true, then take down the “Holy-Day Tree” and go to work on December 25th.

Sheez......not a murmur concerning Easter. Could be the liberals are not familiar with what Easter Represents?

    • disgusted democrat

      Right they still think Easter
      bunnies lay eggs!

      • BigUgly666

Bunnies and eggs are just a couple of the fertility symbols tied to Semiramis - also know as Ishtar, pronounced Ee-star.

    • Screeminmeeme

      jag.....Shhhh.....Don't give them any ideas.

    • Uptite

Easter will be the next target...it will soon be called "Happy Egg day"..where shall it end with all this PC malarkey?
      Merry Christmas to all!

      • DontTreadOnMe11

It already is a target, and has been for some time. When I went to school we had Easter break. Now it's spring break.

Next the Christians will want to put a life size bloody crucifix in the public square on Easter.

        • Uptite

I was thinking the PC police will put a life-sized Humpty Dumpty sitting on a Wall in lieu of that..

not funny I know, but your quick-wit was :)

    • BigUgly666

It has nothing to do with the resurrection of the Christ - do a little study and prove it for yourself. Easter is the proper pronunciation for "Ishtar".

    • wayno

naw, Easter means rabbits and bunnies to them, a fertility rite. they know all about that, especially sandra flukey, or is it flakey.

This country and all of the elite have killed every religion because they want a bunch of braindead morons with no faith and nothng to live for, dependent on gov't.

WAKE UP AND FIGHT, KILL YOUR TV, LIVE LIFE, LOVE. Rasta's knew this forever and have been singing about it forever

    • Madland

They're killing every religion because they want you to substitute God with government. They are the Borg...no joy, no inspiration, no dreams....

You're a judgmental ignoramus. Happy Holidays!

        • Madland

Typical.....you make a judgment call by calling me judgmental but yet I'm the ignoramus....funny. Happy Holy Days to you too.

        • HappyHolidays

You're ignorant because you make assumptions about others motivations based on ignorance. You are ignorant for saying that those who don't share your religion have no joy, inspiration, or dreams.

Indeed, happy holy days. Keeping in mind that holy is purely subjective. I can call an issue of SpiderMan holy and it's got just as much holiness as your Bible.

      • mogul264

To liberals Government IS their religion! And, they think Christianity must be something like worshiping evil! After all, Christians believe in actually helping their fellow man, NOT having the government to do it! PISHT! on that 'do it yourself' and 'taking care of yourselves' crap! If anyone wants to only loll about and smoke pot, the GOVERNMENT should furnish BOTH the pot and the pad!

  • gbandy

It always makes me laugh. Almost everyone in the Nation enjoys the Christmas holiday and or appreciate the Christmas overtime pay. Yet the Liberals attack anything Christian. I guess for companies that must work on Christmas they should just allow the Progessives to work and not have to pay any bonus pay for working........right?

    • A Veteran

Yes, the muslims, Jews, Christians, atheists and all the politicians (politics is a separate religion) want the day off or overtime yet the atheists complain about the holiday-it is stupidity. Te fools says in his heart there is no God.... And who are the 1% atheists who dictate to the rest of us? Why do they have so much power?

      • tionico

sa,e reason the sodomites have beguiled the other ninety eight percent and are carrying THEIR agenda. Most times, its the same crowd anyway. What was that about the one who says there is no God? Fools, er sumpin like?

        • BlindFaithIsEmpty

It's hilarious that you people keep repeating that matter of faith as if it somehow has more weight than any of the other stuff. It's just another empty belief you have.

        • Guest

Well if it is just an empty belief to you, then quit worrying about it. It's our right and its guarenteed right in the Constitution. You only have the right to "not believe", not to stop others from believing. You have the freedom of religion, which includes "not" being religious. Not the freedom "from religion" when it restricts others from there beliefs.

        • FreeFromReligion

I'm not worrying I'm laughing. And yes I do have freedom from religion.

        • mogul264

Actually, you do NOT! There is NO guarantee in any Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Bill of rights, law, rule or regulation that you have freedom "FROM" religion! The correct statement form would be "OF" religion. There is also NO GUARANTEE, real or implied, that you can be an ATHEIST in ANY of the above, but we have allowed it to you, in spite of this! And, of course, you CAN profess that atheism is a 'religion', but you and I BOTH know that is just a pathetic lie!

All that is REALLY guaranteed is that there will be NO STATE-SUPPORTED religion......PERIOD! All else is ASSUMPTION! And DEBATABLE!

        • FreeFromReligion

Actually I do. I'm free from your religion. You can tell me I'm not, but it doesn't matter. I am.

I agree atheism isn't a religion. It is a pathetic lie when people call atheism a religion, as many posters here do.

I'm free from religion. Yes I am.

        • Glenn

You may be "free" now, but you're going to pay a hefty price for it in the afterlife.

I'm not piling on here. But, I go to sleep listening to George Norry at night, and he had what I would call a guest host, who was an athiest, and that man matter of factly stated that athiesm was a religion. Its called "Coast to Coast". The radio show. Its a night show.

You can be free from our religion, and all religions. So that makes me think that you really like Ayn Rand's works. You believe in the Individual.

        • FreeFromReligion

Respectfully, it doesn't matter if a radio host called atheism a religion. It's not. For the same reason that not believing in Zeus is not a religion. For the same reason not believing in One Eyed One Horned Flying Purple People Eaters is not a religion.

Ayn Rand was not a nice person. I do not believe what she believed. I will say, I believe in treating individuals as individuals.

        • FreeFromReligion

Good one Elaine, did you think of that yourself?

        • Ruggedlark

What I said is that the athiest professed athiesm as a religion. I would disagree.

I too, like to treat people as individuals. and I frankly liked Rand's philosophy. I know not whether she was a nice person; it doesn't matter tho. The world has lots of mean people in it. And, I have my moments too. When I could have been a better person. Take care.

You many be free from religion, but you are not free from a Higher Power. If you ever need strength because of sadness in your life, deal directly with your Higher Power and ask for strength. You will get it. It is very real. Merry Christmas, Free.
          Delores Smith

        • FreeFromReligion

Delores, I get that you're trying to be nice, and I get what it does for some people.

It doesn't work with other people. I can't be hypnotized, and I don't buy into nice stories just because they're nice. I don't believe things just because I want to. I believe things because there is evidence for them.

Of course you think it's real. It's happening in your brain and in your body. There's nothing more real than that to a person.

Existence itself is awesome enough for me. I don't need to believe in a supernatural father figure to get by, and I couldn't if I wanted to.

        • Delores109

Hey, you were right. I was trying to be nice. It is your life to live, and I don't know what will work for you. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

My children had pretty much outgrown that phase by the time they were three or four years old.

        • YouDontSeemWise

Do you always rely on stereotypes? Doesn't seem very wise to me.

        • Delores109

Have you ever suffered the loss of many loved ones, or pain within yourself? If you have, try just asking for strength whether you believe it or not, and you will get it. It is not a psychological effect. It is real, and you don't have to belong to a religion, you can talk directly to what you believe could be your higher power. Merry Christmas, FaithisFaith.
          Delores Smith

        • FaithIsFaith

There's no compelling evidence to indicate it's anything other than a psychological effect.

I've suffered pain and the loss of loved ones. It's almost insulting that you question whether an atheist has gone through anything serious in their life. We don't all need to live life the way you do to get through it.

        • Delores109

Your life is yours to live, and I did not mean to offend you. I wanted to let you know about the profound expenence I had with prayer. It most likely wouldn't work for you, because you would not searching for strength.

DELORES Right. 'Nothing' stays nothing. Unbelievers say "There was nothing. Then . . " Then what ? They really are so dumb to believe that 'something' came from 'nothing'(!) and returns to nothing. Nothing never produces 'something'. Thus 'something' had to exist always, had no beginning, will have no end.We don't know how 'it' looks like. But 'it' showed itself a few times under the form of a human male body.We call Him: GOD. That God started everything else:life, materials, plants, animals. Finally: Adam & Eve. We know the rest. 'Unbeliever' believe that something came from nothing ! Well, they have to; for they can not face what will happen to them when their body dies. God created bodies and life. The bodies will die. What about life ? God will reward or condemn; eternally. Depending on our merits.

        • Delores109

Great comment. I will add to what you wrote. If people believe that they came from "nothing," then they must be "nothing." Oh, what an awful feeling to even think that. Maybe that's what gives some people very low self-esteem. People should try to believe, even if it is to give them strength to get through life. Don't deceive yourselves, but there are many times in life that we need strength to make us realize that we do need a higher power. Thanks for your comment, Tout. Merry Christmas, Tout.
          Delores Smith

        • FreeFromReligion

Delores, you speak for yourself but you seem so certain you speak for all others. Not everyone wants to believe in the supernatural to get through life. Not everyone feels the need to believe in a "higher power." You speak for yourself and some others, but not everyone.

        • FreeFromReligion

Showing that humans lack a true and complete understanding of our existence is no reason to start imagining a supernatural father figure. Adam and Eve is magic nonsense that no reasonable person should believe is how people got on this planet.

      • http://twitter.com/MarilynBr MarilynBr

Political Correctness is a principle that arose from the Frankfurt School in Germany in the 1920's. It took Marxism and transferred it from an economic to a cultural application and therefore, it can also be called cultural marxism. If you can control what is the proper thing to say and the proper values within society and declare everything else politically incorrect, you can control and reshape the culture. The principle of political correctness can also be used to deny free speech to those with whom you disagree.

For more in-depth information. see the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjaBpVzOohs

        • http://profiles.google.com/jayleigh3 Sandi Danskin

Yep - you are absolutely correct on the roots of PC - of course, our Founding Fathers knew that principal existed in Europe long before Marx made his debut - which is why they stressed the freedoms so strongly - including the freedom of speech and religeon as unalienable because those rights come from the Creator, not by the will of man. The need to silence opposition and punish any resistance to tyrannical rule is a very strong tendency in by those who would rule, so the founders wanted the five freedoms to be enshrined in LAW - not just in philosophy!

Yes. You should, if you are true to your belief. Tell your employees it is their holiday, and not yours, and if they stay home for Christmas, do not pay them. I would imagine, you would probably have many sick employees. Merry Christmas. By the way, what do you believe.? Just curious.

        • Pastafarian

I do not force my employees to work on Christmas, or Yom Kippur, or any religious holiday they observe. • freedomgirl

Lets see, we have off for New Years, Good Friday, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. That's 7 paid Traditional Holidays.
Maybe it would be easier to break it down and tell employees you will pay for 5 extra Personal days on the Holidays of their choice. This will save the Employer 2 days of pay. The other 2 can be used by the personal days or sick time they already earned if they choose to do so.
          Just a thought...

        • Pastafarian

Good Friday, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day are not paid days off. (unless you are a Veteran, or a widowed spouse of a Veteran) The other 5 days are paid Holidays. If you want to work on Christmas or the 4th of July, it is certainly possible. You would receive the paid day, plus any hours worked on that day paid at the regular rate.

Yes personal days can be used for anything. You want to take a paid day off for Ash Wednesday? Fine. You want to take a paid day off to wait in line for the new iPhone? Fine. Want to march in some parade? Fine. Beyond those 5 days - just ask me for the day off and if you would like to use a personal or vacation day - I don't really care what you are doing on your day off.

        • freedomgirl

After H.S. he spent over 10 years going to college.
He kept changing his Majors unsure of what he wanted to do.
I think all that 'higher education' confused his spiritual 'gut instincts'.
If he can't touch it, it doesn't exist philosophy.
We have a 'friendly debate' realationship we both respect.
He doesn't believe there is a God, I do.
I always say I will pray for him, he laughs... The end...
I am sorry that all these 'Forgiving Christians' are being so unforgiving of you and what you believe.
I wish 'respect' was implied more today against the boy with green hair.
We All Have The Right To Believe As We Will...
With all do respect, as I say to my athiest friend, you are in my prayers.

wow. I am touched. I would have never expected this on this site.

          Thank you.

This is a big thing to not agree on - but we can still have respect for one another and even work together. I respect your opinion and beliefs as well.

I wish you the merriest of Christmases. You made my day.

          As you just made mine!
Believe me, I have been bullied in many sites for my opinions on different articles.
Once I lost my temper and had to take a break for awhile.
          I learned from that mistake!

It also makes me laugh that the Left/atheists/"Progressives" cry for "tolerance" for those who are "different" when they are the ones who are NOT tolerant of anything or anyone who is "different" than they are. Ironic that they can't tolerate Christians or Judaism but they bend over backwards for Muslims and non-believers! I'm curious what atheists or lefties have to say about Unitarians (Ben Franklin was a Unitarian) or their umbrella of Universalist Unitarian - basically celebrating the goodness in our lives, including Christmas, eventhough many do not think of them as "Christian".

  • suzy2

What right do Ahteists have to even have a voice? Atheists believe in NOTHING which is an excuse to live a life of sin and evil acts and hateful characters.

    • Jim S

That's not the case for all atheists. Some know to do the right thing without the threat of eternal barbeque. Those aren't afraid of other's religious symbols and practices... they even enjoy Christmas. So have a Merry...

Never hear an atheist complain about Muslim holidays which are celebrated in the White House. Afraid?

        • A Veteran

Ain't that the truth? No one complains of a muslim holiday or that they are out bumping their heads on a street in Brooklyn blocking traffic, commerce, etc. Why doesn't someone complain about Obama having a muslim prayer partner and advisor in the White House? Seems like he might get some bad advice plus, who is paying the muslim's salary to give Obama advise?????

      • suzy2

That may be true but so do Christians, and your Amendment rights come from the Christian values this country was founded on. Every freedom you have is due to Christain teachings that made the laws of this country

You DO realize that if you put up a holiday tree you could leave it up all year long and put all kinds of different ornaments on it, don't you? Also, anyone who works and/or goes to school at home can do that any old day they want to. Even December 25th.

I have two questions that I hope someone can answer:

I believe Atheism is a religion.
Atheism requires it's followers to have "faith" that an unprovable concept of Random Chance formed everything in the Universe, including life.

Christianity, Islam and Judaism require their followers to have "faith" that an unprovable concept of a higher intelligence, or Deity, created it all.
    What's the difference?

It is my considered opinion, the government is violating the Constitution by forcing the establishment of Atheism as the National Religion, to the detriment of all others.

    My questions:

    Is Atheism a religion?
Is the government violating the "establishment clause" by forcing Atheism down the throats of adherents of other religions?

    • http://www.facebook.com/aemoreira81 Adam Moreira

Debatable and I am inclined to say no, as there isn't any funding being directed to support atheist views over other views.

    • Pastafarian

Atheism is not a religion. It does not address how the universe was created. Only that some supernatural force had no influence.

How is anyone forcing "a disbelief in deities" down your throat?

  • A Veteran

Take down the tree and decorations and all the meals and we have no Christmas holiday. Now that they want to do away with Christmas, they can do away with the commercialism and see how the economy recovers. Jesus Christ wasn't born on the 25th of Dec anyway, the best we can do is narrow it down to Aug or Sept based on the season depicted in the Bible.

    • BigUgly666

Actually, the date of the birth of Jesus is known, exactly. He was born, exactly, 6 months after his cousin, John .... who became known as "the Baptist".

  • http://saddlebum1.wordpress.com/ Timothy W. Lucas

We should move Christmas to Nov 5. If people had these feelings then maybe we wouldn't have elected the mistake for a second term. Four more years of the holiday tree complete with political correct idiots. 2013 should be interesting as everyone and I mean everybody will be in survival mode. And we pay for it. We must really hate ourselves.

Yeah, why was it considered a Federal Holiday to begin with? To commemorate the A.D. practice celebrating Jesus, even though we now know he was not born on Dec. 25. A combination of the religious and the secular. Since the Govenor want to remove all religious aspects of the state, he damn well should work on Christmas or he his talking out of both sides of his mouth...oh wait, that is one of the precursors to being a lib, you like out of both sides of your mouth with equal abandon. What a joke. I bet the crowd, even in upside down RI will still out number the crowd lighting the Christmast tree instead of the holiday tree. Seems to me we did fine in this country for hundresd of years writing letter to Santa while still going to church and singing Christmas Carols. I guess all the gubments busininess in RI must be up to date, the budget balanced, infrastrcture upated and no unemployment and there is nothing else for the Govenor to do but spend his time tacking this major national social issue--for the safetyy of the residents of the state, I'm sure.

  • suzy2

How dare Atheist even celebrat Christmas. They don't have a clue to the real meaning of Christmas. .

And sure as hell not get paid for not working that day. Atheist's are nothing more than S***stirrers--something to fill their emply lives that were magically created by chance in all the stardust swirling around. The stardust is inbetween their ears.

    • BigUgly666

I doubt that you do ....

      • suzy2

You Idiot..It is the birth of Jesus..Easter is when Jesus arose..There, I just educated you.

        • BigUgly666

No, Susy, all you've done is spread a lie taught by the false preachers of churchianity.
Try reading the Bible - educate yourself.
Oh, and thank you for the personal attack - your "Jesus" must be real proud of you .....

        • suzy2

No much of Jesus on earth has been proven. also where the heck do you think you came from? Evolution? If that were the case all specieis would not have male and female gentile. And there has not been enough time for evolution perfection. Read the Bible and maybe you will have a better understanding. Are you an atheist that belives in NOTHING? I feel for you. Hell is a long time.

        • BigUgly666

Do you even speak English? Your lack of spelling and grammatical skills tend to indicate otherwise.
"gentile" .... yes, they come in both male and female ..... as well as assorted shapes, sizes, and colours.

I have "read" the Bible, Dear. I studied the Bible for 25 years, various translations, including a number of intralinears - along with more than 300 associated volumes for reference.

Most often, "hell" actually means, "a hole in the ground" .... a grave, if you will.
A few time, the actual word indicates a "condition of restraint" .... such as, Lucifer being in "hell" (restrained)
There is one reference to the Valley of Hinnon - which used to be the "trash dump" for the City of Jerusalem ..... the spontaneous fires there could not be "put out", but, clearly, they have "burned out" once all of the fuel was consumed.

I am most certainly NOT an "atheist".

  • Ackerjax

They won't stop 'celebrating' - just change the 'definition' to make it strictly secular - it would cause major consumer economic down spiral otherwise.

Anyone who runs a business and has to lay people off because of Obama's reelection
should look around and find out who voted for Obama and also look at who are atheist and they should be the first to go. It was well known that companies were going to have to let people go and cut hours and raise prices if Obama was reelected and they still voted for him let they reap what they sowed. And as far as atheist I don't trust anyone who has no fear of the afterlife. All they have fear of is the law. Someone who has fear of punishment by God sees punishment by God is eternal it gives an added incentive to obey the law. I also find most atheist are very happy or pleasant people. We have liberal's complaining of conservative intolerance when they can't tolerate anyone having a opinion that doesn't match there's. The liberals want to take away rights guaranteed by the Constitution because they don't like it. They are far more intolerant then Conservatives. Liberals try to bully and threaten anyone who does or says anything they don't like. But it's OK to threaten and bully anyone who has a different opinion that they have. They threaten people with lawsuits or even violence because they dare to speak out against things that are politically correct. These fools take political correctness to a new level. They say we are bigots because we disagree with them. We are racist because we disagree with Obama's idiotic economic and energy policies and then if someone dares to say homosexuality is a sin threaten them with boycotts on there company. Conservatives don't do that. Liberals complain that Conservatives aren't tolerant with muslims. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Muslims are the most intolerant so called religious group in the world. They execute people who try to convert a muslim. In muslim countries if a homosexual is found out they stone him or her to death on the spot without a trial and nobody say a word. Is that tolerance? A woman that is raped doesn't dare say anything unless it was done in front of 2 male members of her family otherwise she'll be the one that punished for allowing it to happen. They blame the women for making the man do it. There's no problem with a man marrying a 6 year old girl and having sex with her. The great Mohammed did it. Although he didn't bed her until she was 9. Muslims don't want there women educated. They are not allowed to work. In some countries women are not allowed to drive. How can anyone support a group that has these beliefs. This country has been great because it's until this point been a melting pot where new groups came in and were assimilated. They wanted to learn English and wanted to become an american citizens. This new groups Muslims and the illegals aren't here because they want to become citizens they are here for economic or they left countries where it wasn't safe and they could afford to come here but they don't want to live the american way they want us to change to accommodate their beliefs. The only way immigration works and doesn't destroy the native population is if they are assimilated if they don't at some point they will have the numbers to take over and then those that are natives. Multiculturalism doesn't work that's why if someone doesn't really believe in our way of life and our Constitution they should be allowed in the US. Allowing people that don't believe to stay here threatens our way of life. If they don't believe in our way of life let them stay where they are. This country achieved so much in such a short period of time because it was a capitalist society where the harder work the larger the reward. Socialism and Communism as well as Islam believe in share the wealth where there's no incentive for hard work. Why should you work hard and your neighbor doesn't but receives the sam pay as you. I've never seen the Government run anything better then the public sector. I think Civil War is coming soon. That's the only way we can straighten out the Government and the Courts and put them back on the right track. We tried to elect someone with the necessary experience to get us out of debt. He did it for several companies and got the Olympics out of the red. We don't need someone with a ideology that has been proven over and over again to not work. I don't think we can't afford to wait 4 more years especially since Obama wants a blank check to do what he wants. I think Civil war is going to be the only way we can straighten out this mess and I think it will happen before the Inauguration. If the election were straight Romney would've won but the election was rigged. Any one who voted for this fraud gets what they deserve. We must be rid of those in government who don't support our constitution before it's too late.

  • Floridastorm

I am an Agnostic. However, that is a personal preference and has nothing to do with other people's rights to believe in whatever they wish. I can't, for the life of me, understand why any persons religion or lack thereof offends anyone or should be anyone's business. I would advise all Christians to either ignore or boycott any law or directive that tells them what they can or cannot do under their religion. If the law says you can have any religious symbols in a certain place, just ignore it and continue on. If they arrest you, so be it. Right behind the arrested should be thousands of others. Let them arrest thousands. This is the only way this nonsense will stop. If your child is being indoctrinated in public school with anti-religious propaganda, remove your child from the school and encourage others to do the same thing. Let them arrest all of you. If you are not willing to stand up and fight then you do not deserve freedom under our constitution. Complaining on a forum does nothing. Action does something.

    • whatmeworry

Totally agree,if you don't stand up don't complain!

  • http://www.facebook.com/long.island.tzor Christopher Beattie

A few minor points; The German Carol "O Tannenbaum" actually translates to "Fir Tree." It's history does attach it to the celebration of Christmas so calling it a Christmas Tree is proper and appropriate.

The historian's change from AD to CE is a complex one. "Use of the CE abbreviation was introduced by Jewish academics in the mid-19th century." One of the annoying things about the old system was that A.D. was a prefix to the year (thus the current year is A.D. 2012, not 2012 A.D.) and B.C. is a postfix. A.D. is also Latin and B.C. is English. CE and CBE are both postfixes and both English.
And of course the only President to ever suggest that government "holidays" were a vioolation of the constitution's "separation of church and state" was Jefferson.

    • daledor

Furthermore, in 1798 Jefferson personally helped finance the printing of
one of America’s groundbreaking editions of the Bible. That Bible was a
massive, two-volume folio set that was not only the largest Bible ever
published in America to that time, but it was also America’s first
hot-pressed Bible. President John Adams, several signers of the
Constitution and Declaration, and other major Founders joined with
Jefferson to help fund that Bible.

These bibles reside in the Washington Library of Congress archives.

Also another Bible, "the Jefferson Bible" (he gave to the Indians), was written extracting and focusing only on the words of Jesus. If any dingbat socialist read just Jesus words they would realize that Jesus called Himself the Son of God. Jesus was crazy, a liar, or the Son of God. You socialists that close your ears to any truth that you might live in la la land will be fine if He was crazy or a liar and will be in much trouble (depart from me you workers of iniquity type) if He is the Son of God. I suggest not playing Russian Roulette on the hopes that you are right in defying Him. God loves you and so do I and it is so unnecessary to reject so great a salvation, gain peace, gain joy, gain forgiveness, on and on the benefits to dogmatically ignore the only source of restoration to being able to have eternal bliss.

  • BigUgly666

In all actuality, The Christ was not born in December, but in the fall when sheep were still out in the fields.

The Winter Solstice, the latter part of December, is very important to Nimrod and Semiramis (also known as Ishtar - pronounced as E - star, Eastern Star, Morning Star). You want to be educated - look it up!

    • daledor

      Very good!

Nimrod (great grandson of Noah ) and his wife Semiramis built Babylon. They formed a religion where they were worshiped as gods.Semiramis was called the 'Queen of Heaven' even though she came from a poor family by Nimrod. She built the walls around Babylon and Nimrod and his father Cush built the city and Ziggurat where nature worship was embraced.

Nimrod was the great great grandson of Noah. Noah’s son Ham was father to Cush and Cush was father to Nimrod.

Nimrod ruled Babylon and was very tall. He was referred to in the Bible by God as ‘a mighty warrior against God’. The Ziggurat is an early form of pyramid where the roads spiral around the conical structure to a flat area on the top. This is where the Zoad was placed. The Zoad (see http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/007953.html ) was tailored after the 12 constellations in the stars.

The Zoad was a symbol of the constellations in the order shown in the sky. God put the constellations in the heavens (stars) to reveal His plan of salvation through Jesus and his plans for the earth. Virgo was symbolic of the virgin Mary who would carry Christ, the might warrior that shot an arrow at a bear was symbolic of Nimrod who was a mighty warrior who was slain by a bear (when God split their language and scattered the people of Babylon the Greeks referred to him as Hercules in their language), etc. Each sign symbolized key people and events to occur.

Nimrod did not want people to worship God but to worship him. Before the great flood the human race had intermixed with the race of Nephlim (Nephilim were the
offspring of the "sons of God" and the "daughters of men" according to Genesis 6:4; and giants who inhabited Canaan).

Some of the genes in the Nephlim were carried past the flood within Noah’s family. This is where giants come from – Nimrod was probably larger than Goliath (the Philistine that David slay much later in time).

Since the religion that Nimrod formed was scattered to the whole earth (different countries and cultures) I refer to the New Age Movement as the regrouping and rejoining of the Babylon religion.

    • freedomgirl

      I will look that up.
But I have to say, I have a friend who is an athiest. I always send him a Christmas card w/family photo, he always sends a Winter Solstice card.
No harsh exchanges, we respect what we believe and just both find it important to at least stay in touch that time of year.
His birthday is 2 days after Christmas.
One year I sent him a birthday card....
A cartoon of Mick Jagger skimming a rock across a pond and knocking out 2 ducks.
The inside of the card replied,
"Killing 2 birds with 1 stone, Merry Christmas & Happy Birthday!"

  • ATLDave

Hey I have an idea. Lets call Christmas what it is to allow beleivers to celebrate the Saviors birth. And call Good Friday Aetheist Day so that Atheists can celebrate the day of his death. You can only take one or the other, but not both. This means one less holiday per year - which will make all the Capitalists happy. My sense is that Good Friday will cease to be a holiday and make it a normal work day which wil make all non-Christians happy. Also this will make one less time in the year we have to hear all this "against-Christianity" crap. We don't need to worry about the Occupiers since everyday is a holiday. And we don't have to worry about Libs because the muck will have been sufficiently stirred up to keep them happy for a few years anyway.

  • sandraleesmith46

Can't take the "holy" out of holiday; since THAT is what the word means, and "holy" always refers to a Deity, whether the so-called "atheists" like it or not; but since they don't publicly acknowledge what their particular deities are, even if they've acknowledged them to themselves, which is usually not the case, they don't like anyone acknowledging a Deity publicly!

Do you seriously not know what illiterate means?

        • sandraleesmith46

Of course I know what the word illiterate means; and that there are several forms thereof. One is those who can't read because they either never learned or are incapable of learning to do so; and another is called functional illiteracy; they can read some but not sufficiently to function in a literate world on an equal level; and then there are those who CAN read, but either choose to NOT read and learn, or restrict their reading and learning to only ONE side of an issue and thus are illiterate about the other side or often about truth, which is USUALLY somewhere in between all the propagandist lies! You, I would posit, belong to the latter group.

Why did no one even mention the eight pointed star atop the christmas tree at the capital building last year and this year...The eight pointed star which is called khatam in Islam is considered the seal of the prophet...So it would appear Barck Obama is celebrating the birth of mohammed with the Christmas trees ......
    Use in Islam
By the middle-ages, the eight-point star is widely used as a symbol in Islamic art. It is called khatim or khatim sulayman, seal of the prophets, as in signet ring.see #1 The phrase “seal of the prophets” is also used in the Koran and has particular ideological meaning for Muslims. Moroccan zillij artisans also refer to the eight-point star as sibniyyah, sabniyyah, which is a derivative of the number seven sab’ah.

Rep. Doreen Costa has the right idea. If the Governor wants to not celebrate Christmas, then he should go to work and hold up the fort for the rest of his staff who do want to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior.

  • eddyjames

Paying government employees for Christmas should be illegal. They should be required to work holidays and Sundays at regular rates. Time and a half violates Church and State!

    • freedomgirl

So how does paying time and a half violate Church and State?
If someone for the government works 40 hours a week Mon.-Fri. and gets called in on Sunday to plow snow, they shouldn't get time and a half?
Maybe they just refuse the work and let everyone deal with the snow covered roads on their own.

      • eddyjames

Not for working overtime, time and a half for that is fine . But government workers getting paid time and a half for Sundays and Holidays? Religious days? no they sould get straight time. It's only right. Think how much it would save the tax payers.

        • freedomgirl

But that government worker is a tax payer literally paying themselves.
That is why when there are too many government workers, and not enough in private sector businesses, the tax money collapses.
That is exactly what is happening now.
My emphasis is more on 'State' government employees, not 'Federal'.
I'm talking about the State Government Employees that plow your roads, fix the bridges and the potholes that damage your vehicles.
These workers don't get paid as much as you think.
They are the bottom feeders that keep your system running.
I'm not talking about the 'Big Wigs'.
When it snows and storms, these lowlifes of the government have to make sure you can drive to work tomorrow. They work 24 hour shifts for your safety.
Time and a half is the least they deserve.

  • mogul264

What possessed them to delineate between BCE and CE? Could it be (GASP!) that the birth of Jesus is that point? Absolutely the same as between BC and AD? I wonder!!!

I refuse a Holiday Tree and I refuse to shop in a store that sports Happy Holiday signs but no Christmas signs

I went into a store just before last Christmas and did not notice there were no Christmas signs up. I took the chosen merchandise up to the counter. Totaled it was well over $100 I wrote out my check and decided I had to know if they were selling Christmas items. There was not one Christmas sign in the store. I tore up my check and went to another store where they were Christmas signs all over. I paid about $200 to replace what I almost bout at the Happy Holidays store. I won't buy anything there this year either, because they have the same old Happy Holiday signs up.

  • annie66

Merry Christmas, everyone! Enjoy your Christmas trees and tell the atheists and leftists to go to he**!

  • Brabado

Wish to take this opportunity to wish, all freeloading Atheist that take off, during the Judeo-Crhistian Holidays, a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS, AND MAY GOD KEEP LOOKING UPON YOU, NOW AND DURING 2013!

  • fedup in fl

I wonder if the sandnegros(muslems) had some type of tradition and not car bombings
or sucidebombing, and that tradition involved something similar to a christmas tree.
I'd bet no one would even think of sayyng or doing anything against it.
Man what a screwed up world the libs, fags, commies and negros have made.

The P.C. attacks on Christmas is disgusting.

I'm an Atheist but Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all my religious friends. You fools that want to limit others only decrease everyone's rights. My wife is Catholic and I'm an Atheist and my view is that she as much rights as I.

    • cmjay

Thank you and MERRY CHRISTMAS to you too.The message of CHRISTMAS - PEACE on EARTH and GOODWILL to MEN.

  • http://twitter.com/Vladilyich Ben Gardner

What is actually important is the fact that both dates are provably historically wrong. Christ was actually born in what we would consider 4 B.C. (there was a super nova during that year visible from earth...the "star in the east") and the dates for Caesar Augustus' tax edict were actually in April, not December near the pagan solstice.

  • wayno

all libs should be made to go to work on Dec 25th.
    Along with Scrooge

    • overthetop

Scrooge is part of the 1%. Occupy Dickens!

  • wayno

also, for all those who voted for BO - NO union holiday.

I’m sick of being politically correct as well. Nobody’s been offended by calling a Christmas tree a Christmas tree. And even if they are who cares. Why don't they call it a money tree instead.

  • joolz

    right on!!!

  • Lore

Why stop at the Christmas tree - go to work on December 25th - and also go to work every SUNDAY - that is the day of rest decreed by the Lord.

  • EnemyoftheState

Liberals aren't! (New bumper sticker) - how about "What year is it?" "X years BJD" "WHAT?!" "X years before judgment day" - you'll see you liberal fools.

  • Missy

It will always be CHRISTmas to me. Always has been and always will be. I will say Merry Christmas and Happy New Years. IF someone doesn't like it.....TOO BAD. Go peddle your delusional state of mind some where else...

  • Delores109

When someone attacks you about Christmas, ignore it, and continue doing what you are doing. This includes Obama. I will never comply with any order from Obama. He is deliberately chipping away at our U.S.Constitution to make it null and void. When you see Obama doing something that you know is against the Constitution, remind yourselves that he is attempting to sidestep Congress, take away guns, destroy our religion, etc., and when most of the Constitution is gone, Obama is eager to declare himself a DICTATOR. In your dreams, Obama, not those of your Father.
    Delores Smith

  • Star-Dust

Atheists are people trying to ruin fun for other people. Push their will onto others and not caring if we like it or not or if it goes against one's belief.... sounds like a obama person, pushing his will onto us.

  • WilliamSpires

Now that Obama has re-elected(illegally and fraudulently with 180 per cent of the vote-
Romney only got six votes nationwide, I still haven't figured that one out) we will proceed to cancel Christmas including the holiday; then replace it with a holiday for the birth of Obama's hero, Muhammad. Thanksgiving is also on the way out; why should we celebrate a bunch of illegal aliens who came to America to persecute the indians. No independence day, the colonists refused to pay their "FAIR SHARE" to Great Britain and in addition maliciously destroyed Britains propery (tea). How could we possibly still have a spring break anymore? It is so close to Easter, there has to be a religious connection therefore illegal for a State school holiday, and the majority of the students just proceed to make an ass of themselves anyway and in many instances damage property or end up endangering or ending their lives. By the U.N.'s account America has singlehandedly been responsible for the U.S. Revolutionary War, The Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, the Korean War, The Vietnam War, two Iraq wars, a perpetual war in Afghanistan, The Arabs(who call themselves Palestinians) being persecuted in their pretent country, The Iranians murdering and torturing their own people, The starving North Koreans, We forced the African chieftains to sell their people to work for plantation owners in America(we finally saw the light and ended that evil practice) of course places like Sudan, etc. still use torture and slavery, I guess because of America, also America does not get the credit for ending slavery here, that was Obama who finally declared the abolition unless you're a black democrat, then you still must pay homage to his image. We also feel a certain responsibility for the Crusades and the Inquisition somehow and any other ills of the world. Oh yes we have made many mistakes but I am sure every other nation of the world is squeaky clean. If you have any doubt about whether America is really this bad just ask the United Nations or Louis Farrakhan and they will set you straight.

  • Wibbys1

We need more who will defy the PC morons and "light their own Christmas Tree". Whatever that light may be. Stand for truth and not the idiocy of the PC morons of this present age of darkness.

  • TLady62

Chafee was an idiot in the Senate. Now he's an even bigger idiot as Governor or Rhode Island.

  • doug63

there is a menorah at the rhode island state house and guess what? they call it a menorah. Merry Christmas governor chaffee.

  • Slarker

Christmas bonus pay, triple over-time, is all union BS. All SEIU, AFSCME, CFW, all should be working on Christmas Day at regular pay. If they take a day off, it should be without pay. If it was a paid dayoff, then they are supporting this as a Holy Day.

  • pearl87

Don't give these morons any new idiotic ideas. They would probably prefer to celebrate their major "holy-day" on Obama's birthday. After all, he is their "lord and savior."

    • ObamaIsMyMessiah

What stupid nonsense you spout. Just because we don't think he's the new Hitler doesn't mean we worship him.

  • agrneydgrl

If you don't believe in Christ or God, these things should have no meaning for you and you could just ignore it. Look at the trees and think they are pretty. Ignore the manger scenes and just let those "crazy" people that are believers, enjoy their delusions. Why should the atheists care and why should their offense mean we can't openly show our appreciation.

tax all the liberals who voted for Obama--!! let them share their wealth i'm keeping mine

  • djw663

For all you people who do not believe in God, Jesus and the Holy Bible you all work Christmas Day do not celebrate it, take down your lights, your tree, your presents, forget your holiday pay since for you it is not a holiday and make way for all the Christians who praise God, praise Jesus and respect the Bible and the teachings of Christ.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/ZEOQODRWSKBJEQWKYJKATYCX2U iwojimafan

It's time that we people tell these Atheists A## Holes to take there complaint about Christmas and shove it up where the sun never shines. It's time we get in there face and tell them that if they don't want to celebrate Christmas then move to North Korea, Iran, or any other Muslim country. It's time we tell these Pea Brains to just take it and Shove it.

  • cmjay

This is a brilliant idea . DEMAND that CHAFFEE and his friends work on CHRISTMAS Day. Residents should make sure that the Governor and his Staff do productive work and not sit around drinking EGG NOG.

  • Mikey

Listen, Chafee's an idiot imo, but you want to stop this? Stop referencing ALL holy days in government. Individually, if you are Christian and celebrate Christmas or Jewish and celebrate Hanukkah or African-American and celebrate Kwanzaa, then whether you work for the government or not, you should be allowed to express your freedoms at your desk. You should be able to hum or sing Christmas carols and the like (as long as you're not disturbing the next guy's work). State sponsorship of religion got us here and the liberals and the atheists are calling us on it. So, stop whining about whether your city hall has a Christmas tree and get over it. As individuals, you can celebrate away at your home.

    From my cousin in Australia.

I am truly perplexed that so many of my friends are against- yet another
mosque being built in Sydney ........
I think it should be the goal of every Australian to be tolerant. Thus the Mosque should be allowed, in an effort to promote tolerance.
That is why I also propose that two nightclubs be opened next door to the mosque, thereby promoting tolerance from within the mosque.
We could call one of the clubs, which would be gay, "The Turban Cowboy ",
and the other a topless bar called "You Mecca Me Hot."
Next door should be a butcher shop that specializes in pork, and adjacent to that an open-pit barbeque pork restaurant, called " Iraq o' Ribs."
Across the street there could be a lingerie store called " Victoria Keeps Nothing Secret ", with sexy m ann equins in the window modeling the goods.
Next door to the lingerie shop there would be room for an adult sex toy shop, "Koranal Knowledge ", its name in flashing neon lights, and on the other side a liquor store called "Morehammered."
All of this would encourage the Muslims to demonstrate the tolerance they
demand of us, so the mosque problem would be solved.
If you agree with promoting tolerance, and you think this is a good plan,..please pass it on

You can start year one from 1859 AD, the publication of Darwin's The Origin of Species.
To the rest of us, I recommend dating our letters and correspondence AD. That'll honk 'em off!
