Teacher Asks 13 Year Old Students to Write Suicide Notes

One of the greatest tragedies that any family can face is for a member of that family to commit suicide.  It is especially hard on parents when one of their children take their own lives.  They can suffer for years wondering how they could have prevented it.

In today’s growing secular society, suicide among teenagers has almost become an epidemic.  They are taught in school that they are just another animal and that there is no supreme being to whom they are accountable to.  The kids are taught that there are no absolute rules and the number one priority in life is themselves.  This leaves them without meaning and purpose and when faced with many of life’s pressures, they believe the easiest way to cope is suicide.

Since teachers spend so much time with our kids and grandkids, they should be watching for any signs of trouble and withdrawal.  Teachers need to be doing everything possible to help give the kids hope and purpose.

But one teacher in Montmoreau-Saint-Cybard, France decided that wasn’t his/her role.  Instead, the teacher gave the following assignment to a class of 13 year olds:

“You’ve just turned 18 and have decided to end your life. Your decision appears irrevocable. As a final effort, you decide to explain the reasons for your act. In setting out your self-portrait, you describe all the disgust you feel for yourself. Your text must bring up certain events in your life at the root of this feeling.”

One student’s suicide note was not specific enough for the teacher.  When parents saw the assignment, they were outraged and contacted the school saying:

“We are horrified that this type of topic should be proposed to children between 13 and 14 years old.”

The teacher has been denounced by local, regional and national education officials.  Jean-Marie Renault, a local school official said:

“Telling a pupil that he is about to end his life and that he must recount it appears troubling to us.”

Geneviève Fioraso, France’s higher education minister also commented saying:

“If the topic was launched in this way, without accompaniment, without context, it’s dangerous.”

At the moment, the teacher is on suspension.   But ironically, a number of the students claim the teacher is one of their favorites and don’t want to see him punished for the assignment and some of the parents have said they want to see him return to the classroom.  One parent went so far as to say:

“Suicide is part of daily life.  Perhaps the teacher wished to raise their awareness of the issue.”

I completely disagree with that parent’s statement as well as condemn the teacher for such an assignment.  If he wanted to deal with the subject of suicide, then he should have broached it in a much different way.  Students of any age should not be forced to come up with a reason to take their own life.  Instead, the teacher should be discussing why they have a reason to live and perhaps discuss the pain and horror that suicide inflicts on family and friends.

Most importantly, they need Jesus Christ in their lives to understand that we are all made in the image of God and that Jesus gives our lives purpose and reason for living.  I can say this because I was there once.  I planned and looked forward to my own suicide, but thankfully, God intervened and put just the right person in my life at the precise time to prevent me from carrying out my own murder.

I remember a similar incident at a university here in America about ten years or so ago.  The professor had his students not just write a suicide note, but to write out how they were going to carry out their own suicide.  After two of the students took the assignment too seriously and actually did commit suicide, then and only then did the university take action and dismiss the instructor.

Teachers and parents need to understand that today’s kids don’t need help and encouragement to commit suicide, they need real answers and help.

Funny, I can't find any reference to that anywhere through a google search. Is this just another implication to hold higher education in contempt? If not, could you please provide a source?

        yep, full of crap.

        • CARLjr

Though not nearly as bad as his "article" from yesterday! At least in this one I have some sympathy for him. (if that part of his story is true)

  • Devon Sanchez

This article, like the last article I commented in by Gary DeMar, is utter stupidity. You preach that people need to fear your god. If you want to live in fear of your god's condemnation and wrath then so be it. I choose not to. And so do many other sane people in this world.

    • BlueViolets

So you approve of the teacher's assignment? You obviously don't have children or you wouldn't be so flip about suicide and the damage it does to those left behind whether they believe in a higher power or not.

      • Devon Sanchez

I don't approve or disapprove of the teacher's assignment. If he has agenda to teach his students about the quality of life and get them to express that feeling then I would agree with that method of teaching. But, I have no idea his intentions because I don't take his class or know the man/woman personally, and neither does this author.

I obviously do not have children of my own? Where would you come up with that conclusion? Solely based on my response? Gosh, do you forecast the future also?

Suicide is a very sad human action indeed. But, it is human and it does happen quite often. And, it is viewed differently in all parts of the world and in different circumstances. Some places it is honorable, others not.

To presuppose that this teacher was aimed solely at trying to devalue the students purpose in life and incentivize them to kill themselves, is being ignorant of the situation and arrogant about one's own actions in a similar scenario.

        • Jeff Vandervort

In my first year college level one of the assignments was to write about something that I was ashamed of. The paper I turned in for that assignment was berating the professor for asking their students to celebrate a low point in their lives instead of a high point. If I am going to dwell on something that happened in my past, or something that may happen in my future, I'd rather avoid thinking about the bad parts. This sounds like all to likely a self fulfilling prophecy.
"Let me see; What's a good reason to kill myself...."

        • Devon Sanchez

To you it may sound like a self-fulfilling prophecy. But maybe, just maybe, you mistook the assignment for a reason to feel bad about your actions. Maybe the teacher was hoping that many students would realize that many of the things they are ashamed of in life are really inconsequential. HAve you ever thought about that?

        • Get A Clue

You said: "To you it may sound like a self-fulfilling prophecy"

How do you think a 13 or 14 year old took it... are you really that obtuse?

You are right about things in life that are inconsequential though...

Like trying to have an intelligent conversation with people who still can't put 2 and 2 together to come up with 4... its always something else.

What you're doing is called Subjective reasoning... you make yourself the arbiter of all things, and disregard anything that doesn't fit with your views because that would mean you'd have to change... and that ain't gonna happen... is it?

You don't sound like a Libertarian at all... more like a fence sitter – a moderate in sheep's clothing.

        • Devon Sanchez

I can assure you I am a libertarian to the highest denominator - I am a anarcho-capitalist (subset of individual-anarchism). I believe in the greatest freedom for the individual.

Jeff, I would definitely agree with you about responding to an assignment as such in the way you did. Your professor should expect some to not agree at all in his attempt to bring out a bad past experience. I would have wrote a paper about why this assignment is something I was most ashamed of.

        • oleinwi

Typical liberal, you act in outrage when the person forecasted you had no children, but then don't answer the question. You just reply with more questions. Well, do you or don't you? If you are doing act chagrined, the put up or shut up.

        • Devon Sanchez

I act in outrage? Can you see my rage? Did I use too many exclamation marks?

And, if you must know about my life, I do not have any children but I hope someday to have many. I was baptized and raised Roman Catholic, but, through my purview of the facts, I do not believe in Jesus Christ or any Messianic religion. But, if one of those children happened to enjoy the Christian Bible or the Koran or the Torah, I would let them. They would know my viewpoint and I'm sure they could make an informed decision based on their idea and collected knowledge of the subject. Just as you might believe in a messiah. I don't condemn you for it. I only tell you that it is not for me or for many other people who are of sane minds. I never said you weren't sane. And, yes, there are insane believers just as there are insane non-believers. And you area correct in saying I am a liberal. I am a libertarian.

The 'god' you refer to is the liberal god. The God of the Christian is the Creator of the Universe, and the 'fear' is the awesome respect for His greatness, not "to live in fear", unless you are going to hell for disrespecting His Son.

      • Devon Sanchez

Wait? What? The Christian god is the creator of the universe? You know this? Where does it say that? I can nor can't have respect for someone I don't see as a legitimate person. Do I have respect for Santa Claus? No, because I know he does not exist. I have respect for a man that wears a costume to Christmas parties, donating his time, effort and sometimes money to make children happy.

If I don't have awesome respect for the Christian god's greatness, I will be punished by being banished to hell for disrespecting his son? Are you reading what you are typing?

You poor soul; I'd keep a king size fire extinguisher with me if I were you. On second thought, forget it...it would be way too late. Some people say "May God have mercy on your soul" too late. so I will say...May you find it in your heart fo find God in your life...he is indeed there..., accept his sacrifice for your sins and live forever in Heaven. Or not and live forever in hell. The REAL hell.

      • Devon Sanchez

Many people that have responded me have said that it isn't that I should fear god but I should respect his awesome glory and greatness. Yet, many responders, such as yourself, continue to label those that do not fear his greatness and sacrifice as damned (headed for hell).

God never sacrificed anything for me. Nor did his "son". I believe that we all succumb to death, as every creature on this earth does, and rot away. We cease to exist on this plane and that is all. End of story.

    • oleinwi

Just because you lack faith in a higher power, doesn't grant you any higher or lower ground on the sanity front. You can no more prove there isn't a God than I can prove it to you, that's why it's called faith. But I submit, someone that bases their decisions on a moral compass with a premise they answer to a higher power because of those decisions, stands on much firmer moral ground that those that do not. The entire premise for our jurisprudence system is based on the 10 commandments. Sorry, that's the simple truth of it, like it or lump it. Besides, you may not believe now, but you will....

      • Devon Sanchez

I lack faith in a higher power? What gave you that idea?
I can tell you that the faith of believing in the Christian god or his son has no shred of evidence of creation. If our jurisprudence system is based on the 10 commandments, where did those commandments come from? Can you give me an honest answer? And why would I believe in the future, and what would I believe in?

Re: "But I submit, someone that bases their decisions on a moral compass with a premise they answer to a higher power because of those decisions, stands on much firmer moral ground that those that do not."
Why must the moral compass come with the premise that one will answer to a higher power because of his decisions? Do you really believe we cannot behave according to the Ten Commandmants because they are logical, in terms of how men can best get along with each other in society? I don't. (And I obey the Commandments, not because they are supposedly from God, but because they make sense to me.) I also obey them because I think that in this life, not obeying them will have a price.

    • Phillip Gray

Ultimately, whether an individual has a belief in God or a god or gods, shouldn't dictatean indivual's belief or society's belief in the sanctity of a life. Religion is also not required to have a sense respect & decency. Life is precious regardless of one's spiritual belief. U r obviously an atheist, which of course is ur choice. I don't agree with ur belief but I'm not going to condemn & insult u for ur belief because doing so would belittle my own beliefs. Truthfully, I believe my belief in God pretty much speaks for itself. In my view, the universe didn't just make itself no more than did my clothes, my truck, nor did any life because we all had to come from somewhere. There's a reason its called the grand design. How did an animal get its instincts? Most animals r born already knowing much of what they need to survive. That insinuates programming, so who did the programming? Most methods for procreation r species specific & our bodies work such a way that r far superior to any man made machine. The human brain is more advanced & contains more memory than even the most technologically advanced computer. So who or what is responsible? Nature? Aliens lol? Lol the force? Many different peoples & cultures have something they believe in, somewhere we go & be reunited with our families, someone who watches over them even in death & the fact that atheists claim to believe in nothing is truly sad & terrifying. What an empty existence. I don't insult u, I pity u. An atheist once told me that it'd b scarier if there were a God. Maybe that's because he's afraid he won't make the final cut when he's judged so its better to believe there's no final judgement, no Heaven or hell & what we do n life doesn't really matter. At the same time, I kinda think n the back of ur minds u do kno there's something more but its urselves ur trying to convice, because what's the point in arguing about something that doesn't really exist? Lol if its not real, it kinda takes care of itself doesn't it? As a human being, all we can do is live the best we can, help others and just give a damn. God doesn't want u to be perfect, He knows ur not. I don't expect u to find God just after reading my words, I'm not so arrogant, but its worth a thought. Regardless, just realize that life matters & what the teacher did to these young impressionable children was wrong. Who knows, maybe now some of em r thinkin their lives suck & there's nothin to live for just because the teacher told em to think about it & put it into words. Not much more I can say about it. Merry Christmas to u & ur family

      • Devon Sanchez

Wow. After honestly reading through all of that, I have learned nothing that will make me believe in any faith-based ideology. But it did teach me that you should try to type more correctly because it doesn't help your dictum, grammar or punctuation by writing short. I never said I don't believe in a creative design. I am not, obviously, an atheist. I am a pantheist. My "god" is the universe. God is me, and you, and everything else. I don't see how that wouldn't be the most logical conclusion most people come to, but I won't judge them on their faith. Please don't pity me, I don't need it.

We have innate thought patterns because of evolution, logically. When we grow inside the womb we are connected in every way to our mothers (physically, psychologically, physiologically). That gives us a jump start on learning before we leave the womb. We grow from there.

If the 18 year-olds were duped into thinking they were insignificant and life had no meaning, and the best answer would be to kill themselves, then by golly, so be it. Someone would have to be pretty gullible and ignorant to believe that.

The brain does not have the greatest memory capacity. That's why we wrote many things down over the years, to help with that deficiency. And now we have devices that can hold much more information and calculate things much more quickly than the human mind could ever have hoped for. Your things exist because people created them, not god. Real people created all the things you use every day and they make your life much, much easier. Thank them. Revere them. Honor them. Praise them. They have done way more for you and your family than any messianic god ever has.

One thing I can be grateful for is that you did not use any demeaning language as many of the others on this board have to press their point. Other than that, your response does not answer any questions I have. But it does bring me to question why you put so much faith in something/someone that has not furthered your intellectual capacity nor brought you to a revelation of universal truths. Many people only tell me that all will be understood when I die. Why should I have to wait until I am incapacitated before I receive the answer?

Merry Christmas to you and your family as well.

Those things are good. Who could argue with teaching happiness and helpfulness?

Unfortunately, you also tell children horror stories of eternal torture and burning flesh. Of non-human monsters stabbing them in a world of fire. You consume the body and blood of a man in front of a statue of his corpse. You tell children you must apologize to him even if you have done nothing wrong or the torture will never end. He is all powerful and has on several occasions - killed everyone on Earth. These things frightened me as a child. It wasn't until I was much older and was truly able to comprehend such concepts did I really understand what an indoctrination it was. It is a traumatic bonding. It took me years to get over it.

you are not over it queer

        • Public_Citizen

You are stretching an over-generalization in an attempt to promote your own agenda.
There are many flavors of what is lumped together [mostly by the under educated] under the catch all Christianity. The main commonality is in a document called "the Bible". Even that is not an accurate description as the Bible used by Roman Catholics and some other sects includes material that is not included in other versions of the Bible.
You have some evangelicals who, for reasonable practical purposes of discussion, ignore most of the Old Testament and focus almost exclusively on the New Testament.
The scenario you are depicting is something that is most prominent in the Southern Baptist Church, widely known for their "hellfire and brimstone" approach to evangelism. This has as much similarity to "the Good News" teachings of many of the evangelical churches that the Sunday Funnies has to the Editorial Pages of most major newspapers. The funnies and the editorials are both part of the newspaper but neither one gives you a complete picture of the day without the reading of the rest of the paper. The same analogy may profitably be applied to the focus of many Christian Churches.

        • Sagan

I'm not promoting an agenda, other than there should be an age limit to telling these stories to children. As a child I was terrified of God. I was frightened of Jesus, of church and of the people that worked there. They were watching me - anxious to catch me doing something wrong so they could punish me.

        • Public_Citizen

I can concur with that sentiment and fully support it.

Sounds like you were subjected to one of the more radical Southern Baptist sects.

Our kids attend one of the Mega-Churches that teaches the loving aspects of God/Jesus, a very nurturing environment for children. As part of our grandchildrens religious education they are taught that the 10 Commandments are part of Gods love for us and his desire that we treat each other well. The reason for obeying the 10 Commandments is to show our love and respect for God and for our fellow humans. IMHO if more people would be presented these lessons in this fashion we would have a lot fewer problems in the world

        • sawdust37

It truely sounds like your parents or leaders are at fault for the way they presented God's love to you. You need to get over yourself, growup, learn, speak to those who mislead you, and ask Jesus into your heart. You too can be healed, just take the step and ask for forgiveness. Open your eyes and your heart can be healed thru Jesus.

        • Taquoshi

I'm sorry you were so tramatized.

Protestants just have a simple cross in their sanctuary and their communion is "do this in memory of Me."

Uh, I only remember one total annihilation, that of the Flood. Did I miss another total annihilation?

Telling children they must apologize even when they have done nothing wrong. Uh, according to whom? Most of us can lie without even thinking about it. Other of us can pilfer in such a smooth manner, it would put Fagan to shame. The issue of sin is necessary so that we, frail humans, see the necessity of salvation and the role of grace and mercy in that salvation.

        • Ray

You'll get over it here on Earth, just like millions of you do and it's a shame that you were taught those concepts. Too many religions prophesy heaven or hell, you live in Paradise or you go to Hell; which is something that has driven many men & women away from God & the Savior Jesus! When God is kicked out of everything, then there are no absolutes that are right or wrong, and prople are confused and have nothing to rely on. They do not even trust themselves or their loved ones. "God is NOT the author of confusion but of a sound mind".

Yes, you are spot on. Teachers think they can do anything they feel with OUR children. They need to just teach the subjects they are qualified for, and leave other topics for the children's parents.

      • Mike Tanco

Probably a teacher that belongs to a union. The teachers in Texas don't have a union. They have organizations but don't have to pay union dues to teach. If we let Obama continue to transform this country into a Socialist/Communist country, there will be indoctrination. Muslim law will take over and the Constitution will disappear.

Don't think that the US is any better in the education department. Our government indoctranation units, laughingly known as schools' are just as bad becasue the teachers are a product of these same indoctranation units.

I think that the Europeans in general have a much darker view of life than we might here in the U.S. We had a German intern at my job for six months and she would tell us some of things that her parents would said to one another that, in my opinion, were absolutely horrifying. I was seriously concerned until another acquaintance mentioned that she had gone back home to Ireland with her husband and young child. Her husband was actually shocked at what her "friends" were saying to her as jokes. She said that when she thought about it, she realized that he was right and that here in the U.S., our humor and banter is much different than in Europe.

Still I don't like the idea of having children write obituaries, suicide notes or other things. Maybe because I lost a friend at 14 in a car accident and I saw close up and personal how devastating it was.

PLEASE READ THIS_IT IS QUITE LONG BUT IS STRAIGHT FROM MY HEART TO YOURS AND MAY SAVE YOUR CHILDS' LIFE_Maybe this has already been brought up, but the time line was 4-5 YEARS in the future, an eternity for a teen, and that the entire assignment was given so that the kids could "hypothetically" discuss things that are ACTUALLY being felt. The upshot of that is that AT RISK teens could be evaluated sooner, since most teens think it's not very "COOL" to admit to emotional problems or are embarassed to discuss stressful situations happening at home, and thus hold everything in until they blow. How many parents say, "I NEVER saw this coming" or "its such a shock", or most commonly, "they never said anything". I hear this in roughly 99% of articles that I read. Most parents simply don't want to discuss things with their kids-they honestly seem to think that their child will come to them with a problem, never seemingly realizing that lines of communication must be established much earlier, far before there is ever a problem, and must be maintained and kept open, so that their CHILD WILL come to them with a problem. What if the problem is a common one where parents expect them to "just deal with it", or have unrealistic expectations, or expectations that their child follow a certain way in life, never acknowledging that the CHILD would be much happier and better adjusted if allowed to develop their own paths. Set down rules and guidelines that any good person would follow in life, but don't be so selfish that you live another life of your own through your CHILD. I have put the word "CHILD" in caps mainly because parents and society see an adult appearance, and extrapolate expected adult actions and reactions, when in fact, the unique, special person standing in front of them is still VERY MUCH, a CHILD who still needs your support and guidence and not unreasonable expectations. I myself tried suicide as a TEEN for exactly this reason, because the lines of communication were NEVER opened. "How was your day?" is NOT the way to maintain the lines. The kids know it AND SO DO YOU that those are the words of a parent who is so focused on their problems that they don't really want to be bothered. It's a GREAT way to START OUT, but DO NOT allow the child to get away with the answer "fine, or, "ok". Unfortunately, you and your teen problably ARE living on different planets, but it is YOUR job and responsibility to learn their language, not the other way around. Remember, you wouldn't condone your teen committing murder literally, and yet, when they kill themselves, that is exactly what you are doing. The teen years are the years in which the CHILD'S brain is changing and evolving even faster than it did right after birth!!! Amazing fact and yet, parents today don't even know that, or that the brain keeps right on doing that until 25 YEARS OF AGE!!!!! If the lines aren't open, OPEN THEM and MAINTAIN them, and if they were never opened(the majority), DO IT NOW before it is TOO LATE!!! As an ignorant parent, rather that an enlightened one(again, the majority), I would be BEYOND GRATEFUL to ANYONE who could give me a clue about what my teen was feeling INSIDE(again, the whole different planet thing comes into play)!!!!! WRITING THERAPY is actual therapy, widely used to help those having problems articulating their thoughts and feelings. It has been proven to help IMMENSLY, even for those having no problems putting their feelings into words. The teens brain, in addition to being NATURALLY narcissistic, is also NATURALLY manic-depressive, and can cycle INSTANTLY from one to another, without possible concious control. Giving them that assignment forces the teen to take a look at their OWN feelings over time. It can be a serious call for help from some "CHILDREN" who would never have bothered to stop and put what they feel into words until it is too late and are writing a REAL suicide note!!!. REMEMBER that they are a work in progress, and CANNOT be expected to ALWAYS do what is in their own best interests. As a matter of fact, they can be DEPENDED ON to do the opposite!!! It is a time of change, experimentation, and active or passive rebellion, and that the FIRST THINGS that they will try will be anything that their parents object to and speak against actively, like drinking, drugs, unsafe sex, etc... Anyway, I applaud ALL of the parents who undertake the MASSIVE task of keeping tabs on their CHILD'S INSIDE landscape, and to the rest, I hope that both this teacher and myself have succeeded in opening your eyes in a way that darn near eliminates any embarrassment for you so forget the guilt trip, unpack the bags, and start thinking of ways to more actively participate in your CHILDS' life, even if can be a massive chore what with the verbal objections and the infuriating eye-rolling. While you're out(or at home too), pay attention to clues your teen is giving out about their inside, BIG feelings like their body language(defensive maybe? a clue that should ring alarm bells in your head), avoidence of certain subject sand maybe changing the subect(almost certainly GUARANTEED to press one of your buttons and make you extremely angry almost automatically), great line, I used it with two girls at the time, was "nice try, but I really am concerned/happy/willing to discuss ____with you". Just don't give in to the anger trick I guarantee that it will slip right by you the first few times. Don't give up-eventually you won't even notice that you're catching it almost 100% of the time. Hint: the subject comes at you from left field and may be totally unrelated to what you were talking about originally. Another hint: he/she will pick what is probably the most irrelevant point in the entire conversation to discuss further. Hint: NEVER, EVER basically announce what you will be speaking about. That is almost GUARANTEED to make your CHILD totally shut down and basically render them temporarily deaf. Sneak up to them and to whatever issue, if any, you wanted to talk about. Don't let these BIG TALKS, like sex for instance, be the ONLY time that you really interact with them. Regular conversation and time, no matter what the activity, are the best ways to keep those very important lines open-no getting around it or slacking. Come on, is there ANYONE reading this that has not, on some occasions, actually thought or hoped, that the answer to your daily conversation(How was your day?), "fine" or "OK"? Your CHILD is NOT STUPID, just in need of some work on your part. Eventually, as my girls grew and matured, the answer to my question was an ABSOLUTE FLOOD of information, gossip, etc... If you can just make it over the first "HORMONAL hump"and all the later ones(this will become easier over time), the lines will pretty much stay open enough that, although they may not not be used on occasion, you will remain in tune with their body language and other silent communication. Sudden avoidance of you and your questions and pretty much any important communication is a HUGE and NOT-TO-BE IGNORED sign that something has gone wrong in your teens life. First thing here is to put ALL of the people that your teen is in contact with under a harsh light and micropscope. Predators are usually, almost 100% of the time, hurting kids that they know and are, in their minds, very unlikely to tell. EDUCATE your teen on the signs that are present when someone, unusually, and suddenly wants to become "closer" to him/her. Do not exclude ANYONE, no matter how trusted, from suspicion. I was raped by my soccer coach when I was 16 and SOMEHOW, the fact that he was giving me rides to and from practice when he lived many miles away in the opposite direction did not ring any alarm bells in my parents heads. It actually did, but the risk of accusing someone innocent of a serious crime was more important to them, and the general public actually, than their own CHILD. My mom asked me when I was 22 years old whether or not I remembered him and if he had ever "hurt me". I told her no at the time to spare her the guilt because I had no younger siblings that she could hurt. It pains me that my mom saw signs like him picking me up almost every day, and others, and was too embarassed to warn me about him. I say all this because there are so many families where two working parents are not only the norm, but financially necessary to stay "afloat". Another HUGE sign of outside abuse is a visual rebellion. By this I mean to say that your teen has gone too far, and now suddenly identifies more with a "dark" subculture for example, "Emo", "or "Goth", and has drastically altered their appearance to match. You may also notice that he/she has changed the music that they listen to, and instead listens to things like "black metal" or "death metal". You may or may not notice a depressed mood, for it actually isn't very common at all in a depressed teen. You WILL, if you take the time to keep track of it, hear screaming/shouted lyrics, dark tones, and subject matter which actually glorifies death, evil, suicide, violence, selfishness, and abuse. If asked by the right person, not necessarily you or another parent, they will say that they do not feel as if they were a "normal" person, but instead feel like an "outcast", "outsider", and generally don't feel a part of things anymore. I guarantee that SOMETHING has happened that makes them feel that way. It actually makes alot of sense because the teen can always blame the way they look, rather than what has happened and is now a part of them. Always notice and take action if your teen or preteen has taken to carrying something sharp or pointy, or is keeping such things in their bedrooms or other personal space. This could mean that he/she is causing themselves physical pain to distract them from what is too much negative feeling to bear. The reason that they continue with it is that it actually works. I was a cutter from the age of 9 YEARS OLD and I can tell you that I had never heard of such a thing at that age and developed the behavior all on my own instinct. It honestly, no BS, kept me from committing suicide many times. I won't tell you what had, at the time, been destroying me inside, only saying that the abuse was horrific and ongoing, and something that people today still think is unthinkable, and therefore assume is a lie, or something the CHILD invented to get attention. ALWAYS listen to ANY stories of bullying, sexual, or other abuse even if you think that the person accused would NEVER do something so vile. Another sign of sexual (and physical too) abuse is when he/she in any way objects to visiting someone's house consistently. Listen more to what your child is NOT saying, because, I have noticed and lived it, and kids as a whole, say the bare minimum possible to their parents on a NORMAL day. Remember that they are scared of not only the abuser, but of YOUR reaction, and really can't handle any more than the anger, fear and embarrassment that they already endure. even if, and especially when, the abuser is of the same sex as mine was. Ignore these signs at your own risk and realize that, if your CHILD is telling the truth(they really don't have the vocabulary or the thinking process to lie about such things) then your CHILD becomes a BEACON to EVERY predator that they come into contact with, even as adults. THEY WILL be abused again!!! Possibly many times in fact-check the stats on this if you wish. I sincerely hope that this isn't really what you want for your child. Take ANYTHING that helps you figure out what's going on inside your CHILD, even if it is distasteful to you, gratefully and as the gift from God that it really is. This was an academic problem for healthy children-nothing more so don't worry, and a cry for help from those children who are under so much stress that they could picture themselves doing it-IN 4 YEARS remember please-something that, if it continued for so long they wouldn't be able to handle it . Most teen addicts are really self-medicating and only doing it to numb the pain. It forced the kids, in a way that keeping a "journal" just can't, to take a good hard look at themselves and their current problems. A pretty clever and sneaky way actually, and so listen carefully if your teen speaks often about "a friend's" problem-if it happens alot then there's a pretty good possibility that the "friend" is really your CHILD. Imagine that your kid has just committed suicide and you are asking yourself why. I can assure you that whatever the problem was, it was not something new, but something there for awhile and festering. It takes an enormous amount of whatever stress it was, to overcome their own survival instinct-one of the largest, if not THE largest, force in our lives. We "emotionally disturbed" teens are very good and darn near perfect at hiding any and all obvious emotion but, THE SIGNS are there and I can't really say anymore than watch for them please, and pay attention and be ready to discuss anytime the word "suicide" comes up. It could be about an anonymous or never seen "friend" up to and especially including active threats. Take them seriously all of the time, anytime, and whenever they occur. Find whatever help your teen needs and can COMFORTABLY take and USE because at this point it is beyond what you can handle alone I GUARANTEE IT!!! What a good idea as an assignment, distasteful and wrong as it seems to you. The teacher has opened a VERY important, and very SCARY discussion between you and your teen as long as you choose to take advantage of it. The teacher probably wanted this assignment to do just that. BE WARNED PARENTS!!! If you overreact and spew disgust, outrage, and anger, you may have just closed the door FOREVER. You have probably seen to it that he/she will NOT keep you informed of what's inside not only to "spare your feelings", but because he/she is certainly going to expect that exact response or an even larger one, being that it is now quite personal. To your teen, that response is absolutely TERRIFYING first and foremost. He/she needs to see you calm and IN CONTROL at all times never mind now. They need to discuss it certainly. Help them with it from time to time, but not too very often. Take note of how quickly they completed it. If they treated it as just another piece of schoolwork, then you either helped them too much and accidently set off their precious "privacy" alarms. Leave them alone awhile, especially at first, and see how long it takes-do not help unless asked. If it was completed in a relatively short time that takes into account any specified length, I would still discuss it of course, but wouldn't worry too much about it unless other alarms are going off elsewhere too. I would require a minimum, but no maximum myself. If they are taking more time-look in on them and see if they are having any problems, such as spelling etc... Then take note of their general mood. Are they deep in thought or looking too depressed for even such a serious subject? If possible, let them finish on their own and you will have a possibly disturbing look into your teens inner landscape. Discuss now and right now, you won't get too many golden opportunities like this one. If I were the parent of a teen and my kids weren't already grown(32and 36), I'm pretty sure that we would read this together and discuss what she would write and how, and what she thinks of the assignment in general. I would even strongly request that she do it for me. Great way to open up many important doors and avenues of discussion, especially today where, even though my kids haven't been teens in awhile, I can still imagine, empathize, and be completely terrified picturing even more challenges such as changing sexual norms(in whose flippen' universe is oral sex considered "no big deal" and holding hands to be VERY serious!!!???-WOW-still have problems seeing that...), the proliferation of the internet, good and bad, wartime, etc... It is of paramount importance, I would think, to stay as connected to your kids as possible given the world today. Wow. Hats off to all you moms and dads who have to raise your children in this huge mess that this society is becoming and already is!!! My youngest now has a 7 year old of her own, and is much more outraged than any of some of the posters here, by the facts that her son will be learning, in California's public schools, that homosexuality is not something that is bad to practice rather than being a unique and especially difficult cross to bear, and about all of the "heroes" that were homosexual(I can't think of one who was a hero to society as a whole rather than just their own society. I bleed with, and pray for, all of you parents , grandparents, and other caregivers who have the massive job of raising your kids today. I sincerely hope and pray that at least a few people read this, and can take away from it even the smallest relevant clue as to how to raise your kids-I can bring only my own experience as a disturbed teen and as a parent. Thank you soooo much for reading this!!!! God bless and keep you and all of us!!! Love, Paula xoxoxoxo

Don't think for a moment that this kind of thing is found in France and not here. We are facing some terrible challenges to rid our school system of this secular humnist garbage being spouted by the NEA - supported leftist teachers that have saturated our system with the same filth. Our government schools are full of them. There may be a good number of sincer teachers but most have been brainwashed by their college professors.

I have a question, and I wonder if I am the only one who has noticed this. The question is, how come every time the anti-gun people start pushing hard for draconian gun control laws, and when Obama and his administration tries to push for the abolition of the second amendment, suddenly there is a rash of mass shootings, could there be a connection? Could there possibly be a government connection behind this? Why is it that when the anti-gun groups get wound up, suddenly so many young people seem to go over the deep end and start shooting up people, have they been programed by some some government agency?

      • mtngal

        • fatman45

Why not? They facilitated the smuggling of a couple thousand guns into Mexico to bolster their argument for UN gun control, which is an end run around the Second Amendment. Those guns have killed hundreds, if not thousands, of Mexicans - including children. You can't put anything past people like that!

        • CARLjr

Here is the problem with your theory: "to bolster their argument for UN gun control" That was not part of the plan.

The ATF scandal was an illegal, incompetent mess. But it was not a second amendment issue. Operation Fast and Furious was not about taking away American's right to own guns. It was about giving Mexicans those rights - well, some specific Mexicans.

        • fatman45

Totally wrong! Administration officials arguing for ratification of the UN Small Arms Treaty, including Hillary Clinton and Eric Holder, made statements claiming that 90% of the guns found at crime scenes in Mexico could be traced to the U.S. A "fact" dutifully parroted by the Leftmedia. When that was exposed as a lie - the truth being that 90% of the guns that could be traced, which was less than 10% of the total, came from the U.S. - then they resurrected a failed program started by the Bush Administration (known as Operation Gunrunner) and used it to purposefully send guns to Mexico. What makes it a Second Amendment issue is a provision of the Constitution that states treaties are the supreme law of the land. Thus, a poorly worded UN treaty could be used to circumvent the Second Amendment.

The teacher was fired. He shot her in the face. It was her class that he slaughtered. I can't believe there's not more comments about this. Nor can I believe that Godfather Politics hasn't already written an article about the shooting. The BS I'm seeing on this forum about teachers not using God in the classroom is sickening. All teachers are Liberals!?! What, because they're educated? No matter if they do or not, I always thought it was the parents job to educate their child about religion. If a teacher teaches evolution, a student with parents or parent who have raised the child to believe in The Lord, will not have their beliefs changed unless the parents don't practice what they preach! Which is usually the case. I'm a teacher. My curriculum does teach Evolution. There is no doubt that there is evolution. Look around. But I also believe that God did create the Universe, though the idea of the planet only being five to six thousand years old is laughable and scary that people actually believe that! Are dinosaurs an actual conspiracy by the democrats? I have parents that believe that and will argue with our Pastor. He, like me, believes in Creationism but just not the timeline. You can believe in both! Creationism begat Evolution. Is as simple as that. Just please believe me, WE ARE NOT TEACHING CHILDREN NOT TO BELIEVE IN GOD! We don't speak of religion because I have Baptists, Nazarens, Episcopal's, and Catholics. All are Christian based but all don't believe the word in the same way! What are you supposed to do when one group doesn't worship God in the same way? You let mom and dad educate them on that! I don't want to impinge on someone else's beliefs. I'm more concerned with teaching them to grow up to be responsible and intelligent adults

      • http://missionoutreach.org Ray Downen

The shooter was the son of the now-dead teacher. He chose to kill his father and his mother and himself. His reason for killing the others was likely only to show his lack of love for his mother. I'm guessing that she was the last one to be killed before he took his own life. As for evolutionary theories concerning many thousands of years, they are theories disregarding God's creation, and are of no worth. Evolution never created anything. The theory is that some unknown power caused changes over a span of thousands of years, but there is no God. An utterly foolish theory. Our goal should indeed be to help each person grow up to be responsible and intelligent adults. If so, they'll not believe in evolution.

        • Tout

I found your comment to be entertaining, to say the least. I won't address the nonsense about teachers all being liberals. Not all are, but the overwhelming majority do toe the liberal line. What really amused me was this comment:

"My curriculum does teach Evolution. There is no doubt that there is evolution. Look around." I found this to be especially amusing, since by "looking around" it's obvious that there is NOT evolution. It's never been observed, it's not happening now, and the logic of it (and its proponents) escapes me.

I also received quite a nice chuckle from your comment regarding your pastor's beliefs, "He, like me, believes in Creationism but just not the timeline. You can believe in both!" I would love an explanation of how you can believe in something (the Bible), and yet NOT believe in it at the same time. It would require, I believe, what is referred to as "cherry-picking". "I'll believe THIS part, but I am going to ignore THIS part."

Anyway, just wanted to let you know how amusing I found your post. Thanks.

Sounds like giving justification to the action. An exact opposite scenario would be a healthy exercise: 'You (or a close companion) are considering suicide. Discuss the reasons why this is the wrong reaction to your situation.' The responses could be a good indicator of which youth need help and consoling.

  • rchguns

The solution in any other place in France would be quite simple. The teacher would be given three hours to write their own note and be allowed three choices as a means of ending their own life. Those choices being" hanging, ritual Oriental suicide, or drowning" basically no easy way out. Seeing how this is France assumes the media quiets down this teacher will more than likely be reinstated.

Those who take their own lives are not in their right minds. Some do become religious fanatics, that's true. Many more are ungodly fanatics. But the Way of Christ calls for love of life and love of all other people as well as love of the person who will face God in judgment. Suicide is bad, never good. Many Christians are also good citizens of this nation. Any Christian who lives in the U.S.A. should be a good citizen. And our schools include many who are ungodly and who are teaching to create atheists. Such teachers should be removed from public school classrooms. And John should be made to sit in a corner or have his mouth washed out to cleanse it of dirt.

        • Tout

Absolutely, Such teachers should be removed. They should learn themselves about God.

I believe the entire world is death-oriented - they care more about dieing than about living. It is now the culture of death, whereas, we, even in the USA, would do all we could to preserve life. No more. Just look at OWEbamaTAX. This is a sad commentary.

Having worked in a school with potential suicide students, I never would have assigned this topic. It suicide is such a problem, then schools (perhaps) should conduct a workshop for recognizing the symptoms with parents. Students are supposed to write about things they actually have knowledge of and usually it is recommended to put some distance (years) beyond the event. Teacher was perhaps well intentioned, but used poor judgement.

For the writer to write the following is about as intolerant as one can get: "Most importantly, they need Jesus Christ in their lives to understand that we are all made in the image of God and that Jesus gives our lives purpose and reason for living. "
It's nice that he needs Jesus in his life, but Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and adherents of other religions do not. Too bad he is so intolerant he could not have framed this in terms of "God" or "religion" as opposed to his own religion, as if the entire world adheres to his beliefs.

This started to happen back in the '60's already. That's why it is important to home school your children, so things like that aren't being taught to your children. They can be taught about God and importance of why this country was founded. With all the Freedoms to worship God in the way of your choice.

When they started to bring about abortion. Before that, nobody ever thought about aborting a baby. That was a sacred thing. When the females have abortions, they suffer the rest of their lives. Although they don't want to admit it, so they start to dull their senses with drugs, to forget about what they have done to themselves. Lots of people say it doesn't bother them, but deep down inside it will always be brought to mind by Satan. That is what Satan does, he keeps reminding you of things you have done which is contrary to God's plan for you. You have lost your relationship with the Lord when that happens and the Lord wants you to come back to Him on your own. He will not force you to return back to Him. But, He is waiting with open arms, in case you decide to return back to Him. He will love you just as if you never left Him.

Meanwhile, we have 24 dead in an elemetary school, Why do we try to mainstream kids who should be in mental institutions only to see them murder innocent kids. Do we see a trend here people? Perhaps a rethink is in order.

  • medivac

The event that happened today in Connecticut is a reality check on the problem this mentally unstable teacher seems to have. I have been thru the suicide plus murder in my wife's family back in the 80s and we knew that the brother-in-law was unstable mentally and tried to get himself admitted into a veteran's hospital to get help. We had him admitted to the mental ward locally but he was released in a couple days. He went on to kill his estranged wife who lived in her home state. He was a medically retired police officer plus a military vet that had mental issues that I had seem before in him. His retirement was a directly related to a mental cause. He premeditated the murder and was attempting to lose his identity and become someone else until I made my wife tell where he might show up upon returning to our home state. Wen approached by the person he first made contact with , he was confronted by her due to the law enforcement already questioning her and upon leaving her home without even entering it, went a couple miles down the road and walked out in a brushy pasture , waded out in a stock tank and put the .44 magnum in his mouth. He was unstable as is the recent mass murders. Check their history and you'll find this critical link. Most today probably have a video game back ground and fall into a sense of false image that they are the player !!

    • Mathchopper

Today, Connecticut proved that their gun control is getting out of hand. The killer had TWO guns. Apparently he had to kill himself. The cops were too far away and none of the teachers were armed. I wonder how many of those dead kids had lib parents who will still not understand how most of those kid's lives could have been saved. Yes, I know, guns are dangerous.

      • medivac

Guns are as dangerous as the nut behind them in the cases involving the mass murders !! I know too much about making simple but effective WMDs and have since I was a kid. Amy Lambert - the writer of the article is allowed to write as he sees fit and can discuss, along with, bring in what ever topics are relevant to make his point. The first amendment offers all of us this right. Just like you are allowed to comment and disagree.
By nature, we are all sinners -- go ahead, google it and then try wikipedia too since those are your favorite resources for rebuttles -- but you probably won't find the facts or truth you need there because you choose to overlook them. You'll choose the answers in opposition to the true facts.
There is only one place that provides the answers, the Bible. It is people like you who think all religions are equal and others who try to minimize them that cause most of the problems. The fact is, no other religion other than Christianity offers the saving grace that society needs and yet it is OK for people to trash it, actually it is regarded as politically correct to bash Christians. Go figure?
The truth is, if you seek God you will find Him. If this teacher had done this instead the students would find out there is greater value in life and absolutely no value in death.

  • Somnambulist

Sorry, folks, I disagree. Let's have a reality check. Turning away and making believe that teen suicide doesn't exist, or making it a taboo subject doesn't address what is a very real problem. Facing it directly, with the children themselves, allows them to contemplate the reality and consequences of teenage angst that too often expresses itself in suicide or mass murder such as happened today in Connecticut. Like leprosy, it needs treatment more than exclusion from sight.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=629591346 Gary Jones

A teacher doesn't have the expertise to talk on mental illness or the knowledge to confront suicide questions or the complex emotions. The teachers of today have agendas of aligning with political factions of society.

Unfortunately these things are happening more and more in our world. Could it be the lack of the family unit? Could it be that we hold life so inconsequential - abortion on demand? Could it be the lack fo God in the lives of many? Could it be the lack of respect for other human beings? Could it be the lack of consequences for our actions?
My response to all the questions I posed is YES. It's time for each and every person to take responsibility for themselves. The world will be a better place. No more excuses for bad behavior

What a horrible sneack! In setting out your self-portrait, you describe all the disgust you feel for yourself. when the kids goes under constant misshandling at home and instaed appraised are bullyed in a nomal base, that click from the teacher push them not to be the best they can but to cut life!

The problem is that many educational institutions are forced to listen at prostitute speeches, at terrorrists as Ayers or the Massachusets university high rise of the students mortality may rise awareness!

Instead to be encouraged to dream large and be the best they can be!? Do we grow wonderfull unique kids to be at the wrong sugestions of such person? It is true that many kids are living the hell at home by misseducation handlings or whatevere social issues they may face , but to cut the hope of a better future with such sugestions, maybe this teacher is one poor victim in need to cope his own experiences with his social duty...

this teacher himself need to discover the Jesus Christ love and sacrifice in order that HE LIVE conscious about the payed price of the dead and the highest duty to live sinn free and busy with lans the kids may se t into God hands as written in the proverbs..to be sure that are successfull when match the God common sense 10 Commandments too..

Th e biggest loss USA experienced since the 1776 Jefferson Independence Chart is JESUS CHRIST AND GOD TEACHINGS AS THE OBLIGATIVITY TO STUDY THE BIBLE WASS ET APART IN THE AMERICAN SCHOOLS!

iMAGINE THE BENEFITS OF TEACH TEH JESUS CHRIST DEVOTION AND DEAD once IN ORDER TO SAVE THE HUmanity1 and teach the kids to live at the high moral standards in order to get a fair pursuit of teh health wealth and happyness, the constitution is promising but never able to deliver it!

IMAGINE THE KIDS ENCOURAGED TO BE THE BEST THEY CA N BE, JUST AS THe NAME OF GOD, JEHOVAH, MEAN IT! I will become..without a powerfull example to follow with the paradise as the ultimate destination by using the mind and the soul and the whole capacity to serve, than look the last century social state and hopefully may give ourself and our kids the best Christmas gift ever! the CHRIST ITSELF!

now hopefully may not ask : Christ who? or convince yourself is all about the purple dress and gifts...it looks soo much like the dead treaty Avraam have faced when meet the King of Sodom which said to Abram: GIVE ME THE SOULS, BUT AKE THE GOODS FOR YOURSELF! Genesis 14:21 http://www.jw.org/en/publications/bible/genesis/14

A number of student deaths in the late 1990s and early 2000s resulted in considerable media attention to MIT's culture and student life.[291][292] After the alcohol-related death of Scott Krueger in September 1997 as a new member at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity,]MIT began requiring all freshmen to live in the dormitory system.

The 2000 suicide of MIT undergraduate Elizabeth Shin drew attention to suicides at MIT and created a controversy over whether MIT had an unusually high suicide rate. In late 2001 a task force's recommended improvements in student mental health services were implemented,] including expanding staff and operating hours at the mental health center. These and later cases were significant as well because they sought to prove the negligence and liability of university administrators in loco parentis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology

I agree that this assignment was totally wrongheaded. Instead of having the children put themselves in their own shoes, the teacher should have assigned them the task of imagining themselves the parents of a suicidal teenager, or one of his older friends. That said, I have to disagree with this article's emphasis on Christianity as a buffer against suicidal thoughts and feelings of worthlessness. People were having these problems and dealing with them successfully long before Jesus walked the earth, and even in pre-Pagan, animistic times. Insisting that people need an invisible, external crutch to get through life is almost as harmful in the long run as actively promoting suicide. All that has to happen to a person dependent on doctrine is to have doubts about that doctrine, and his whole life then comes into question. People should actually be educated to become confident of their own judgment and to have the tools to inform and exercise that judgment. Of course, modern public "education" doesn't do that, either.

And these LIBERAL, SOCIALISTS, TWISTED politicians wonder why our kids act out????? This person should have been IMMEDIATELY FIRED, NEVER TO TEACH AGAIN, ANYWHERE, and consider herself lucky the parents didn't hunt her down and beat her. OMG!!! What a sick POS

That assignment should be given to the entire range of beasts roaming the corrupt hallways of Wash.d.c.

The teacher is obviously not suited to be teaching young people. Brainwashing, it sounds like. Encouraging death. Not good by any measure.

Organize. Close the Federal Department of Education and return it to the States where it was when parents, grandparents, family, citizens had control and we had excellent teachers, and happy students.

By what right and whose permission allows this teacher to be in the classroom with students...I think I understand the heart of the teacher but she/he did was abominable in anyones sight. OhOh, I forgot that the President of the United States approves of such things as abortion and this is up his alley.

Whatever side of the religion fence you may sit, whether or not you have children, we can all agree that the school shooting that happened today was a national tragedy. This is different than Columbine - Different from the movie theater shooting. This one was against young children. Twenty kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old and six adults.

I also believe that no matter what your religious beliefs are - this French teacher's suicide assignment is a terrible idea. Especially if the parents were unaware. It's morbid and dangerous.

When I read through the comments - I see both sides are eager to jump to blame, to show why "the other side" is the cause of the problems of suicide and mass murder.

As this Connecticut shooting story develops, please remember this one is different. Please tone down your vitriol just on this one. You can go back to being nasty when the topic isn't about dead kids.

WHEN YOU HAVE EDUCATORS TEACH THIS TYPE OF EDUCATIONAL TEACHING IN THE CLASS ROOM, THEN THEY HAVE TO ASK THEMSELVES WHY DID AN YOUNG CHILD WOULD TAKES IT'S OWN LIFE?? THE BLAME CAN BE LAID ON THE VERY DOORSTEP OF THOSE WHO TAUGHT END OF LIFE TEACHING IN THE CLASSROOM.

  • knowpockets

That is the most you can expect from a liberal they are a sick bunch and the will only get worse stay alert.

  • kathy

Maybe if children were actually taught to figure out problems. Suicide would be the last thing on their minds. Suicide is nothing more than a permanent solution to a temporary situation.
Teach them what they need to know. Do not assume you need to teach them things to nose into their lives which is all this teacher was doing. The teacher is popular because he goes to the dark side, sick sick sick!!!!

  • SouthernLadyNC

The Liberal Progressives and atheist minority in this country are reaping what they have sewn. They took God and the Bible out of schools -- now the children grow up no longer knowing or caring about what is right or wrong. They no longer have any moral compass to navigate through the evil in this world. They no longer have ethical grounding.

  • granny

Good Lord, where did he get his education. There are teachers that do an excellent job and there are teachers that just teach without any feeling about whether they are doing a good job or not. Teachers are doing some not so cool things right here in the USA.

Let's see....How to write a proper suicite note....Really? I cannot imagine any scenario in which this would be helpful or appropriate...not even to broach the subject, which is a troubling epedemic among teenagers especially.
How about writing a letter to someone who TOOK his or her life, telling them how much life is worth living, and why; how much their loved ones miss them; and what they will never get to experience...
That, maybe, but let's focus on the positive, the good, and the healthy...Kids experience enough death and destruction every night when they go home...on the TV and in their games and even music....Let's make school about life, and hope, and a future....In light of today's tragedy in Conneticut, I think we need to change our focus and start looking up!

How any Christian can leave a child in a public school is beyond me.

  • shearwater

This teacher should be fired. Creating in a child the existential emptiness of this world and having them seriously think about causing their own death is not what life is about. This is why parents are home schooling their children . . . to avoid these kinds of teachers who have the notion of forming kids in a "values neutral" and hopeless frame of mind. The Bible says to think about whatever is good, whatever is pure, whatever is praiseworthy, if their is anything noble or virtuous to think on these things. And what is right about that? Everything!

I seriously hope that those of you who cannot grasp the true value, read my post and comment please-I have not only sucessfully raised two daughters, but was a suicidal PRETEEN, teen and young adult. In any serious attempt, I NEVER bothered with a note. No one listened to me anyway I pretty much thought. The other attempts were almost as serious, but actually going to the left side of my brain, the logical side and the side we need to put things into words, destressed(not distressed) me enough that I backed off of the idea. That assignment would have HELPED me, because you would have been getting how I felt since we almost ALWAYS, because it is EASIER, write from our own experience. Had the kids been allowed to complete the assignment, their parents would have gotten a rare and valuable look into their own childs' heads. It was an academic exercise for the healthy kids-just a little make believe note and a newfound awareness of a serious issue that we as parents should ALWAYS take every opportunity to discuss. For the kids having real current problems NOW, it gives both the teacher AND the parents a golden opportunity to be there IN TIME and fix problems NOW!!! What REALLY breaks my heart is all of the parents who freaked out at the subject matter and closed, perhaps permanently, an essential door between you and your child. Haven't we yet learned, as a whole, that avoiding a subject and sweeping it under a rug until it ACTUALLY HAPPENS DOES NOT WORK and is SELFISH!!! The adults basically didn't want to discuss a subject that made them uncomfortable...How very sad...

This is what it has come to America! Because we have taken God out of our schools, we end up with this junk. Why the he-l don't the teachers tearch what we pay them for. What about a history lesson--is learning math out of the question? How many kids coming out of school can't read any better than a 4th grader? In some areas, if the kid misses 4 months of school, they still get passed to the next grade. And we wonder why 50% of the kids quit!

  • ken.

attention all students please ask your teachers to write a suicide note and follow through with it! now is the time to put the left wing teachers in the spot light and expose them for the trash they are. attention all parents please remove your children from public schools now! if you can't then teach your kids to stand up to their teachers whenever they step out of line and teach anti-american left wing lies. it is your job as parents to challenge and put left wing indoctrinator teachers in their place and put the fear of parental rights into the teachers. we should start a parents union to go against the teachers union and show them who's boss.

  • Warren

This idiot should be banned from education forever, what a warped mind. I guess he is in some teachers union and can do anything he wants to our children, right? Parents who support this kind of thinking need to have their brain examined.

All teachers should be subjected to a variety of psycological tests, that are overseen and scored, by a psycologist that has been certified as competent to conduct such tests, before the teachers are qualified to become teachers.
Oh crap, I'm sorry, there probably would be only one teacher out of one hundred that would qualify. Well,.....that is providing we could find a certified psycharist.

    • Devon Sanchez

Depending on where you find your psychologist, where he/she was educated, and who "certifies" them of administering "competency" tests, you may have 100 out of 100 plus one "certified" school teachers every time.

Recently I had a heavy handed housing inspector give me 24 hours to get "excess" stuff out of my apartment or risk being evicted or worse. I am concerned about being forced into a euthanasia factor, ie. nursing home. Thankfully I was seeing a clinical social worker on the topic of cluttering that afternoon and had someone to talk to. But recently, with many degrees, I have no one that will hire me, even at the college I am attending, part time next semester. I have state supported insurance and public housing and have been forced onto SSI for the elderly as the social security system did not count my wages back 20 years as I worked the past few years for the state, and that does not count. As I traveled by bus to the medical appointment, and then a rehab appointment afterwards I voiced to these "professionals" the following question. If none of the skill sets I have acquired in this life have any value and I am not wanted, even to volunteer, for much of anything; then why should I continue to be an expense of almost $2,000 a month to my friends and neighbors.

In other words, give me some solid reasons why I should not commit suicide and thereby end the drain on resources that I am. "Entitlement" people like myself are destroying this nation, and this sort of a wanton graft/greed has to stop.

As I could have predicted, lame excuses about people liking my personality or that I have commented on something in a meeting and that was a good comment or they had heard of how I had helped someone in the past and wasn't that a grand thing to do, were all given as reasons for continuing to be such a burden on society. None of these "held water" at all. My roots are in the country. I believe the Biblical phrase of "He who will not plow by reason of the cold, shall beg in the harvest and have nothing".

I do not agree with having teenagers write suicide notes. But it might be a good idea to address the wave of suicides in this country and maybe read and talk about some of the notes people have left as to why then did it. Also reading the comments of parents and friends and family that are left behind wondering how they failed that person. In such a way the topic is introduced and the students can see the flawed thinking. Then have the student write about what are the things they contribute to life, family, school, religious group, sports, hobbies, etc. Tell of what they like and what folks like them to do. Have the young student look at the positive things they are and in so doing help to "inoculate" that child against the thought of suicide that come in the teenage years from songs, from print, form all sorts of media that they "follow".

But the children are not costing their friends and neighbors money just to live. I am an older man and because I had epilepsy I was told not to marry anyone or be friendly with a girl because if we did get married we might want to have a child and my sperm would just "weaken the gene pool".

Where I live you can not have a cat. (Nor dog etc.)

So there is no one or no thing that depends upon me for life and happiness.

I have been very sick after an accident and recently had "shingles". Doing the college work has been so hard for me. So when someone called and said they had "missed" me at church, I did not know what to say. I just assumed that person was having a "blue" moment and so the call was made to me. They wanted to tell me I was welcome at their house for Christmas. I politely said thank you but indicated I was going somewhere else.

I will be going to try and help someone.

But right now I need to get back to boxing up and putting away the tools of my life so a housing inspector can be happy. The inspector will like the apartment, and it will have wide spaces to walk through, and thus be a danger for a senior as there would be nothing to reach out and touch and get the bearings from. I can not blame the inspector, as a city person the inspector has no idea of how to live in a self sufficient manner, no how to live frugally and reuse that which is able to be serviceable with only a little bit of care or repair.

Yet, the order of get it all done in 24 hours, which is an impossibility for me, could only be accomplished if people were hired to destroy my life by boxing up everything. That would mean even more money I would be costing my friends and neighbors through taxes.

The insanity of this whole thing now is becoming ludicrous. So I do not have the thoughts as to if I should commit suicide. Instead I am convinced I need to return to the country where people live normal lives in connection to the soil and their surroundings and not in a "group think" atmosphere of following others like so many lemmings going to the sea to drown.

So I had the negative thoughts and emailed some friends, some of which have government and social work jobs, and insisted on telling the health field professionals I saw the other day about my feelings. I did so because I needed help in seeing another side of this and the city inspector (his very presence by an anonymous complaint was an additional expense I had caused society) and his unbending fiat threw me into a depressed state that I was not able to control my self easily.

A 13 year old child has none of these faculties to draw upon as I did.
That 13 year old might "try out" suicide, but might also "succeed" in the game, and die.

It is more than chastising the instructor.
Whole school systems need to address teenage suicide and provide their students with the tools to evaluate what that teenager brings to society, and use that knowledge, on the part of the student, to ward off the insidious hints that suicide is "the way to go".

Recently many children in Connecticut were killed. I did not dwell on the news reports.
All I had to do was to hear it once, and my heart is still crying. I would have adopted any child, as our poverty life style would have still had love, The thought of all these young ones killed is overwhelming. Did that killer take the life of someone that was destined to find a cure for AIDS or something else equally as wonderful?

So all children's lives are precious, and the school system needs to teach that and help the child ward off the media attacks that say otherwise.

But to help them to write suicide notes as if it was an OK thing to do, commit suicide, is way, way off base.

Let us once again pray for our nation, and that we gently and compassionately guide our young ones, as they ARE our future.

Put the 10 commandments back in school. Tell the kids its a mortal sin to kill yourself.

Well now. Let's just say that we went back to the churches of America running all the schools,.........let's just say, [nomatter what you've been told, that's the entity that originally did the schooling, until the 1900's], so,.........let's just say they did again? Please try to come up with the terrible outcome which would be the result from that scenario? Try, if you will, to explain away the complete breakdown that has occured as a result of the government getting their sticky little hands on the money that runs the schools along with the control of the students which was wrested from the parents? Now let me show you what's behind it, in the Congressional Record, January 10, 1963--Appendix pp 34-35A, under communist goals for the overthrow of America, #17, quote: "Get control of schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of the teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks." Check it out before you call me or any other constitutional conservative a "crack pot." Ask yourself, who changed things and why?

The most backward, dangerous countries in the Middle East provide perfect examples of the "terrible outcomes" of having the religious leaders control the schools. Your ideas would fit in well there.

Whatever happened to the teachers that taught reading, writing and arithmetic? The fools they have in there now shouldn't be allowed to associate with children let alone teach them! This slippery slope will only get worse as the universities and colleges keep tenuring profs that have never worked a real job in their lives teach our children the marxist way of live for the US and then these children grow up to teach our children. It is a neverending story of the rotten kind!

From a therapist's point of view, once you do something, it is much easier to do it again. What this teacher did is called insanity. He was exploring his own needs in a public forum. The students may like him, but that does not mean at all he is a good teacher. IF and I hope he does not, but if he returns to the classroom, any classroom, they need video monitoring of this guy. He is a danger to himself and others.

personally, I think it would be a way to draw out suppressed emotions and then figure out why they feel this way and what can be changed to make life better, to make them WANT TO LIVE! Maybe it would give some enlightenment on what those who killed then killed themselves felt and what triggered the attack. Sometimes, all it takes is actually looking inward and expressing those feelings. Our kids do need to understand that, for good or bad, we influence the lives of everyone we meet/talk to in at least a small way.

And the child, down on himself and life, gets an F and fails his own suicide note, and this sends him off the cliff!

Most young people are lucky to have two parents, and if they do , the parents are out working. When I graduated high school in 1960 ,I was the only kid who had no father, because of divorce. When My son graduated high school in 1990, he was one of only kid that had a mother and father. Feminism is destroying this country, and Europe.

It is a cold and lonely place when you are a stranger to yourself. I always try to say hi or give a smile, you never know when something like that will break through the gloom.

No, teaching children that 2,000 years ago a "chosen" virgin female became the vessel for god's son because god "impregnated" her magically, the messiah "sacrificed" himself for all the current and future sins of his followers, rose from the dead and ascended into a "heavenly plain" that apparently exists above us. I know I am missing something. Well, I am sure if I read the bible all the way through I will find something else new and exciting that also makes complete sense...

Jew religions have no place in schools, at any rate. The lack of that in schools is hardly a knee-jerk reason for them to go out and commit suicide. THAT is from their OWN personal problems. Or maybe 'gawd' made them do it?
at any rate, the shooting in CT is the result of a JEW going tilt AGAIN! Bundy, a JEW. Gacy a jew . Loughton, a JEW. Lasla, a JEW. Kliebold, a JEW! Harris, an ARA jew supporter! Abraham, a JEW!
How about we just keep gunsaw ay from the JEWS and make every gentile alot safer? Or better yet, GET RID OF THE YIDS!!

And judging by your lack of spelling, grammar, and punctuation, you must have received a bachelor's degree in journalism at one of America's highly-esteemed public education institutions.

The teacher is demonstrating what suicidal people go through so the children learn compassion. Also if the children have inner emotions this might bring them out so they can hopefully get help. I think this is creative and good. Only an idiot that lacks common sense would believe the teacher is actually encouraging suicide.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ChristinaWolfle Christina Wolfle

If you actually read suicide notes, many of them mention GOD. So no, suicide is not a product of secularization.
