Australian Gun Ban Resulted in Higher Gun Crimes, Not Lower!

President Obama, Vice President Biden, New York Mayor Bloomberg, and all the other liberal Democrats want to ban guns from private ownership in order to reduce gun violence in the United States. But will it?

In 1996 newly elected Prime Minister John Howard of Australia pushed for stricter gun control. That year the Australian Parliament passed the National Firearms Agreement which banned the private ownership of all semiautomatic rifles and semiautomatic and pump action shotguns. The new law also established more restrictions in the licensing of other firearms.

According to the National Firearms Agreement private citizens were forced to turn over the banned weapons in a government buyback system. Beginning on October 1, 1966 through September 30, 1997, the Australian government spent $500 million in purchasing and destroying more than 631,000 banned guns. Howard and other politicians promised the citizens of Australia that they would be safer now that these horrible weapons had been taken off the streets.

However, that was not the case!

Since Australia banned semiautomatic rifles, shotguns and pump action shotguns the gun crime rates have skyrocketed throughout the country.

  • Murders committed with guns increased by 19%.
  • Home invasions increased by 21%.
  • Assaults committed with guns increased by 28%.
  • Armed robberies skyrocketed with an increase of 69%.

Many former gun owners blame the government and their gun control laws for the increases in crimes. They feel helpless in their own homes, unable to protect themselves. In fact, home invasions were so rare prior to the gun ban that the nation did not even have a legal definition for what a home invasion was.

Seeing the direct results of what the ban on guns did in Australia, they are now warning us not to follow in their footsteps.

With gun control being the number one item on Obama’s agenda, I feel that it is vitally important to share this video with everyone you know, especially your Senator and Representative in Washington and your state capital. Show them that banning guns will only increase crime not reduce it and demand that they take action to prevent the Obama administration from turning us into another Australia.

  • chuckster

why don't they reverse the ban?

    • Screeminmeeme

      Good question.

    • rrg51

That would involve a politician admitting that he/she was wrong. You see where this discussion leads.

      • michaelmousedisqus

Banning guns is another way that the obama democrats buy votes.

    • DoingMoreWithLes

Have you ever seen a politically charged decision reversed? The controlling interests don't want people armed. Armed people can revolt and that's what the UN smalls treaty wants to control. They don't want any internal struggles against their chosen leadership for each country. The fact that we own the UN should tell you whose agenda is really being projected by the UN. We fund it and have it in New York for a reason. Big question to ask yourself is who has the most to gain from things like Agenda 21, the global warming agenda, etc.. Look internally and you will understand.

      • Geo/USN/Ret

The UN is a beautiful piece of property that should be sold for high rise condos, and send the UN to Haiti where they are needed. Then get the US out of the UN!

    • Lorna Doone

No country that has given up it's right to bear arms has ever gotten that right back because all political power comes from the barrel of a gun. Our leaders want to transfer that power from us to them.

  • Screeminmeeme

    Same thing with Great Britain.

  • Tim

OK, but it doesn't really matter does it? In the U.S., it's a constitutional right, regardless of crime statistics!

    • Doodlebug

But this jerk will mess with it anyway. What is it, 19 new stuff coming tomorrow? I guess some of it is enforcement of current regulations but who knows what else? I don't trust one word that comes out of his mouth and now for tomorrow, his background is children. Use whatever method he can, to get what he wants. All the people with white jackets when trying to get obummercare through, people from small businesses when trying to get higher taxes for the so called "rich" and now the children. This jerk has absolutely NO concern for anyone but himself.

  • Ronabout

We need a reputable source for such information. Many people have disputed this story.

  • NamelessN00b
  • Oops!

Once again, Giacomo tells an enormous lie. In this case, he completely accepts the deceit of another right wing rag with a video that promotes a cesspool of outrageous myths. First, Australians never had a "constitutional right to bear arms", and when the buy back program occurred in 1997, relatively few citizens had firearms. For the actual facts (which I doubt any of the readers here would be interested in) go to
Giacomo does what many of the right wing extremists do when they try to convince their followers of one idiotic thing or another; one of them invents a bogus quote, or a myth, or a reasonable (to them) sounding conspiracy...and the rest of the lunatic fringe echo chamber picks it up and runs with it, as though it were true!! Unfortunately, their followers --- including the readers of this rag --- begin to salivate when they read or hear about it...because it fits snugly into their own hate-filled minds.

    • Carl Stevenson

Snopes is a well-known leftist propaganda machine. It has ZERO credibility.

      • Oops!

Sorry, Carl, but your right wingnut mind just can't deal with facts. And the same is true for your sad, sociopathic bretheren. You (and they) claim Snopes is "a leftist propaganda machine" because they blow apart your mythology and lies in detailed and factual ways. You probably think that WorldNetDaily is a reliable source of news and information, and that Fox Noise is "fair and balanced." You and yours are the ones with ZERO credibility among the rational, intelligent, and well informed masses. And thank God for that! You could, of course, check with the Australian Bureau of Statistics.....but you'd probably accuse them of being leftists propagandists, too!

        • Carl Stevenson

"If ye love wealth better than liberty,
          the tranquility of servitude
better than the animating contest of freedom,
go home from us in peace.
We ask not your counsels or your arms.
Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you.
May your chains set lightly upon you,
and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."
          (Samuel Adams)

        • Tabitha Bliss

According to Australia’s Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research; who you state we should use, "the gun ban had no significant impact on the amount of gun-involved crime".

And Snopes has been busted putting out fraudulent stories so many times, they were discredited long ago. Anything that works closely with or receives funding from the likes of Soros should be considered a progressive propaganda outlet. After all, he's well known for setting up / working with propaganda "news" outlets in many other countries at the same time he sets up his shadow governments. They serve to both indoctrinate & spoon feed misinformation to the masses as he finishes the overthrow their gov'ts & has made no secret of his plan for the US. "The destruction of the United States will be the culmination of my life's work".-George Soros

Then again, you're so obviously full of vitriolic hatred for anyone in the conservative spectrum that there's virtually no chance you'd look into these things with objectivity so I don't know why I bother.

        • Dasrge

Go get him Tabitha, he is just another paid liberal troll just trying to cause trouble. The best thing we can do is ignore his ignorance and disinformation.

    • Conservativesniper

on this pdf You will see FACTS not filtered through the media. The FBI and Home Office in England are infinitely more credible than snopes. On page 11/12; homicide, violent crime, suicide and the increase in robberies after shotgun certificates numbers decline are incontrovertible FACTS. And that is what you do when 'gun control' infringes on my natural right to defend myself.

Would you be satisfied if Melinda Herman in GA, who defended herself and and twins against a determined criminal with a .38, didn't have a gun and that herself and children probably would have been murdered? Do you support taking away the ability of the law abiding to protect their lives, loved ones and property? If you do, are you willing to fight to the death to take away guns from law abiding citizens? Because there is a significant percentage of gun owners that will.

      All facts here.

    • Douglas Gillard

If relatively small few citizens had firearms, then why all the panic against guns? They confiscated hundreds of thousands of firearms from law abiding citizens and it did not stop crime. You can disarm yourself if you want to but I'll stay armed because the second amendment protects the right to own guns. If you don't like that, too bad.

  • DoingMoreWithLes

The "Don't confuse me with the facts, I've already made up my mind" crowd don't care about information that refutes their reality. This is all about control and not about guns. There are far more people dying by other methods that they don't even care about. Which proves the point that this isn't about saving lives. Just as our open borders proves that the federal government isn't interested in controlling terrorism. It's all kabuki theater.

    • cyber_hackster

The "Federal Government" is only interested in keeping themselves safe - Safe from the Nation "Of The People" ----

    • Geo/USN/Ret

Yes, you are right! More people are killed with hammers and baseball bats than with guns. Have you ever noticed that gun stastics don't show police shootings, just the number of people killed with firearms? If you want the truth go on to Sydney morning hearld and see what the U.S. Media isn't telling you.

      • halberst

I looked at the Sydney Morning Herald. Oddly enough they think the US should follow their lead. Here are a few quotes from recent SMH pieces:

"Guns policy saving lives", In the decade before Port Arthur, Australia experienced an average of one mass shooting (involving five or more deaths) every year. ..... "Neill and I found that the firearm suicide and homicide rates more than halved after the Australian gun buyback"...."It would be heart-warming to think Sandy Hook could be the turning point on US gun control just as the Port Arthur massacre was in Australia in 1996."....."The gun buyback also had some unexpected payoffs".... and plenty more.....
Were you reading a different SMH?

  • DWinch

Politicians could care less about crime skyrocketing, they DO care about getting shot when they try to enforce rules against our will and the laws of this land.
Tyrants only care about taking away our ability to defend ourselves from them.

  • DontTreadOnMe11

Pravda has also warned us not to give up our guns. If they don't know what Communism is, nobody does.

  • Carl Stevenson

    It's not about crime.
Feinstein, Schumer, Obama, Holder, Bloomberg, and their whole gang of progressive/Marxist/socialists are tyrant wannabes. To them, anyone who does, or might, oppose their control over every aspect of our lives, is "a criminal" because they said so.

To quote a few of Obama and company's heroes, with explanatory comments in ( ):

"Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun." - Mao
(They revere Mao and the way he ruthlessly grabbed power in China. The fact that he murdered about 100 million Chinese to do it is, to them, a "feature," not a "bug.")

"If the opposition disarms, well and good. If it refuses to disarm, we shall disarm it ourselves. ... The only real power comes out of a long rifle. ... Everyone imposes his own system as far as his army can reach. ... We don't let them have ideas. Why would we let them have guns? ... The death of one man is a tragedy. The death of millions is a statistic." — Joseph Stalin

“The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their fall by doing so.” -Adolph Hitler
(These psychopathic sociopaths in our government - and THEY ARE PRECISELY THAT, never make the mistake of doubting it - believe that they are anointed to be our rulers and that we are the equivalent of Hitler's "subject races.")

THOSE are the reasons why, and the sort of people who want to, disarm us.

These same people through DHS and other alphabet agencies have recently purchased over 1.8 BILLION rounds of ammo – enough to shoot every man, woman, and child in the country more than 4 times – ammo that’s illegal for military use under international law. Considering that you and I and all of the other US taxpayers are paying for all of this ammo, it's frighteningly reminiscent of the story of political prisoners' families being forced to pay for the bullets used to execute them ... isn't it?

If we allow these leftist control freaks to ignore and ultimately gut the 2nd Amendment, history will inevitably repeat itself. These "gun control" proposals have NOTHING to do with preventing crime, but EVERYTHING to do with CONTROL.

Hitler disarmed the Jews and others, then murdered about 15 million.
Stalin disarmed the Russians, them murdered about 40 million.
Mao disarmed the Chinese peasants, then murdered nearly 100 million.
The Turks disarmed the Armenians, then murdered 1.5-2 million.
Pol Pot disarmed the Cambodians and murdered millions.
Rwanda disarmed its ethnic groups, then murdered millions.
The list goes on … over 170 million people murdered BY THEIR OWN GOVERNMENTS in the 20th century – AFTER they allowed those governments disarmed them.

They ALL thought “It can’t happen here” – until they were disarmed and it started, then it was too late. Don't make the same mistake. Don't EVER let your government disarm you.

The Founders knew that government, if not constrained at every step, will continue to accumulate power and control until it becomes tyranny. That's why they feared standing armies and insisted that the "right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

"Never forget, even for an instant, that the one and only reason anybody has for taking your gun away is to make you weaker than he is, so he can do something to you that you wouldn’t let him do if you were equipped to prevent it. This goes for burglars, muggers, and rapists, and even more so for policemen, bureaucrats, and politicians." - Aaron Zelmanm

    • Oops!

Carl, you really need to get on some medication. With your paranoid, delusionary mind, your exactly the kind of sociopath who shouldn't be anywhere guns!

      • Douglas Gillard

How typically liberal; declare anyone who does not think as you do mentally ill. That is how the Soviet Union did it during the '70's and '80's.

        • Dasrge

Your absolutely right Doug, whenever you disagree with these idiot liberal trolls, the first thing that start in with is the name calling, "your an idiot", "your mentally ill", "the person your referencing was discredited by so many people"...when in fact the people doing the discrediting are more liberals. Our country is seriously divided between liberal and conservative and I fear that resolution the to these differences will only come with civil war. With the liberals now trying to disarm us " nut job conservatives" I fear that the beginning is well on its way to starting. Good luck and keep your powder dry.

      • lara

actually you sound like the nutcase and hope you dont have guns cause you could hurt someone with your mental sounding Culmo!!!

      • John Douglas

Great, another socialist idiot heard from.
Where in reality do you people come from?

  • Jed54

These morons have more answers for gun control then stopping their spending spree. They need to solve the money problem then peoples rights to own firearms. But I guess the spending is not the important issue rigt now. I'm surprised Obama does"nt glow in the dark when lights or off.

    • cyber_hackster

Washington is using the gun control issue as a smoke screen as to what is really happening - Each morning you awake, you have lost a little more of the little bit of "real" freedom you have left...

  • 7papa7

The left doesn't care about us as individuals, they don't care if we are safe, they ONLY care about their agenda. Remember folks their agenda is to take away our ability to defend ourselves so that we are totally dependent on them. Once that happens, well look at Nazi Germany for your answer. We must not allow any infringement on our second amendment rights, period. If the Marxist in the white house attempts it tomorrow then we must take legal action against him in a class action suit by ALL gun owners.

    • Oops!

Another ridiculous claim! And one that the gun lobby and all the wingnuts just love to echo, even though it's completely untrue. I'm not a defender of Nazi Germany, but I am of the truth. The German people were ordered to surrender their guns in 1919, after WWI. But in 1938, Hitler actually enabled and encouraged the German people to have guns...except for the Jews. Check your history people, instead of just swallowing the lies that your leaders tell in order to easily put fear into you! You know...just take the time to check "the Google machine"!

      • Carl Stevenson

No, the Nazis didn't just disarm Jews, nobody who wasn't "reliable" ( a Nazi party member in good standing) was allowed to have arms. Merely getting caught with one was cause for summary execution.
Don't try to tell me about the Nazis ... My wife had family members with numbers tattooed on their forearms.
Go have another class of koolaid before your mommy comes home and yells down to the basement that your dinner is ready.

        • Oops!

You obviously didn't bother to check the facts, Carl, as I expected. You're clearly one of the lunatics that shouldn't be let out of your cave, unless you're on a leash being escorted to a freak show.

        • lara

you need to be committed..a liberal nutcase ranting as usual..ugh ugh hope mommy gets you a cookie tonight

        • Dasrge

I have checked the facts...repeatedly and the only individuals that had gun restrictions loosened during the nazi regime were PRIOR registered avid hunters, government employees, and the nazi party...all groups were either mostly controlled or completely controlled by the nazi party. Go spread your disinformation somewhere else. If you weren't a loyal party member or hadn't given oaths of loyalty to the nazi didn't legally own a gun in Nazi Germany.

  • James Maxwell

Rather stange that the so called "Enlightened" nations who surrener their private weapons
are now comming under attack from more illegal weapons? England had such a low
occurence of gun related crimes when I was there back in the 60's and 70's that the
British Bobbies did not carry guns except in emergence situaitons and then only certain
ones were issued them. Now ever Bobbie carries one as a matter of safety. They
still have their Truchons which are their primary and first weapon of response. But
the very fact that they have to issue firearms to their police is astounding. They have
very strict gun laws and only allow certain weapons to be owned by the populance.
But as others are discovering the criminals do not obey the law, respect others nor listen
to any foolish politicans who wants to disarm them. They just go about business as
usual much like an other criminal.

  • Uptite

I would have liked to seen these stats being compared to that of Switzerland -

"One of the reasons the crime rate in Switzerland is low despite the prevalence of weapons — and also why the Swiss mentality can’t be transposed to the current American reality — is the culture of responsibility and safety that is anchored in society and passed from generation to generation...

As if we needed another nation's bad experience with idiotic gun control when we have a crime-free haven in Kennesaw GA? Ever since Kennesaw required all residents to maintain live weapons in their households, no-one's tried any crimes worse than Samhain pranks or graffiti. The real crooks probably left for easier pickings where they wouldn't get lead poisoning...

Then there's the hypocrisy of whining about firearms abuse deaths while drunk drivers remain frequent, and while our 'drug policy' leaves corpses from Canada through Mexico to South America...

  • Skip

This may sound like a conspiracy theory, but has it occurred to anyone that the resent gun attacks may have been GOV ordered manipulations of weak people around the country so they could start to go after the guns? After all Hitler had to get rid of the guns first. Who better but drug adled idiots with CERTAIN Dr's controling them. Just a thought!

I have said it a million times "You take the guns away from the law abiding citizens and than only the bad guys will have guns". Well Australia you did it to yourselves.

  • Bob Belcher

They been passing gun laws for 70 years. what has it done ? criminals don't follow the law look at OBAMA he took an oath to up hold the constitution that has never happen .

  • TelltheRealTruth

What a load of rubbish Australia.......At the heart of the push was a massive buyback of more than 600,000 semi-automatic shotguns and rifles, or about one-fifth of all firearms in circulation in Australia. The country’s new gun laws prohibited private sales, required that all weapons be individually registered to their owners, and required that gun buyers present a “genuine reason” for needing each weapon at the time of the purchase. (Self-defense did not count.) In the wake of the tragedy, polls showed public support for these measures at upwards of 90 percent.

What happened next has been the subject of several academic studies.
Violent crime and gun-related deaths did not come to an end in Australia, of course.

But as the Washington Post’s Wonkblog pointed out in August, homicides by firearm plunged 59 percent between 1995 and 2006, with no corresponding increase in non-firearm-related homicides.

The drop in suicides by gun was even steeper: 65 percent.

Studies found a close correlation between the sharp declines and the gun buybacks.

Robberies involving a firearm also dropped significantly. Meanwhile, home invasions did not increase, contrary to fears that firearm ownership is needed to deter such crimes.

But here’s the most stunning statistic. In the decade before the Port Arthur massacre, there had been 11 mass shootings in the country. There hasn’t been a single one in Australia since.

    • Don(TN)

Guess your govt could stop the war on guns after they got them .....right now our govt is conducting a war on guns

So all violent crime did not jump after guns got taken away?

  • Vin Ienco

thank god somebody else realizes this...

Uh... I'm not sure where you're getting your "facts", but they're wrong. Since the gun legislation passed, there have been zero(0) mass shootings (mass shooting is defined as a shooting killing more than 4 people). In the 15 years prior to gun control legislation, there were 13 mass shootings. The firearm homicide rate fell by 59%, the firearm suicide rate fell by 65%, and there was no rise in homicide or suicide rates with other tools. You people that truly believe any articles on Godfather Politics need a reality check. Unfortunately, you can't live in your made up conservative world anymore. It's time to change what's wrong with America (and there's a lot), but you people refuse to accept any sort of progress.

  • Mason Pritchett

I'm not sure where you have collected these "facts", but they are flat out wrong. In the 15 years prior to gun control legislation being put into action, there were 13 mass shootings in Australia (mass shooting is defined as a shooting killing more than 4 people). Since the passing of gun control legislation in Australia, there have been zero(0) mass shootings. Is that what gun control failure looks like? Also, murders involving firearms has decreased by 59%, suicide involving firearms has decreased by 65%, and there have been no increases in murders or suicides involving other weapons. The fact that people get their "news" from a website called Godfather Politics is laughable, but the fact that nobody cares to fact check these publishers is down right sad. It's time we fix what is wrong with America, and as soon as extreme right- wing politicians/voters accept that these policies of the past are simply outdated, we can begin to do that. For Christ sake, congress can't even pass a bill that 90% of America supported (background checks). Please, fact check anything you read online people. In our modern information rich society, it is imperative to exercise media literacy. Especially if it is coming from Godfather Politics.

  • RightWingersHateFacts

The Australian Institute of Criminology found that gun-related murders and suicides fell sharply after 1996. The American Law and Economics Review found that our gun buyback scheme cut firearm suicides by 74 percent. In the 18 years before the 1996 reforms, Australia suffered 13 gun massacres — each with more than four victims — causing a total of 102 deaths. There has not been a single massacre in that category since 1996.

Few Australians would deny that their country is safer today as a consequence of gun control.

  • edward

I would ask where you got your facts but i am pretty sure you just made them up. Gun crime plummeted in Australia, sorry rightwingers but reality is once again against you.

    • Greg Giles

Its not a right wing versus left wing issue Edward. Try not to fall for the illusion that we are separated by wings. The people are one, and the elitist rulers are not one of us. These oligarchs want total authoritarian control. No more elections and no more financial or criminal investigations regarding their actions. Armed Americans stand in their way of total control. These oligarchs always have to move slowly and use cation because Americans are so armed. What they fear most is another American revolution. Disarm Americans and they will be free to launch their New World Order.
