Patrick Henry's 1775 Speech a Warning to Modern America

When Patrick Henry gave his famous "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" speech in March 1775, he was attempting to arouse the passions of Colonials who still felt favorably disposed toward Britain despite the growing threat of military force against the Colonies.

Patrick Henry must have felt some of the same frustration that is felt by modern conservatives who face a political establishment that has frozen them out of the process and a public that has been lulled to sleep by media happy talk about an increasingly authoritarian regime.

The Department of Homeland Security is purchasing billions of rounds of hollow-point ammo that has been banned under international law for use in war. The sheer volume of ammunition would have fed the flames of the Iraq war for decades, even at the height of fighting. These sort of DHS purchases have been going on for more than a year, and now the DHS is adding used armored personnel carriers to its arsenal. Platitudes aside, the Administration has not been forthcoming with an explanation about what it's up to.

Also in process is the plan to put thousands of unmanned military spy drones into the air over America. Already there are reports of drones being spotted over New York City, and the Navy recently filed an environmental report for construction of a drone base near Malibu, California. Add in scattered reports of unusual troop movements around the country. In Los Angeles, military choppers have been seen on numerous occasions in the past year flying at just above treetop level along the busy Highway 101 corridor. Over the past weekend, a  convoy of armored Humvees with top gun mounts was seen driving on the same stretch of highway.

Gun control efforts are making their way through congressional committees, urged on by a president who has already issued a list of executive orders designed to limit access to, and use of, guns, particularly so-called "assault rifles," which could put a shooter on equal footing with either police or criminals.

In his speech, Patrick Henry warned his fellow colonists, "Suffer not yourselves to be betrayed with a kiss. Ask yourselves how this gracious reception of our petition comports with those warlike preparations which cover our waters and darken our land. Are fleets and armies necessary to a work of love and reconciliation? Have we shown ourselves so unwilling to be reconciled that force must be called in to win back our love? Let us not deceive ourselves, sir. These are the implements of war and subjugation; the last arguments to which kings resort. I ask gentlemen, sir, what means this martial array, if its purpose be not to force us to submission? Can gentlemen assign any other possible motive for it? Has Great Britain any enemy, in this quarter of the world, to call for all this accumulation of navies and armies? No, sir, she has none. They are meant for us: they can be meant for no other."

Patrick Henry was talking about a government that would not listen to large segments of its subject population, much as the current Administration chooses not to speak with, listen to or work with conservatives.

"Let us not," he said,  "I beseech you, sir, deceive ourselves. Sir, we have done everything that could be done to avert the storm which is now coming on. We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne, and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of the ministry and Parliament. Our petitions have been slighted; our remonstrances have produced additional violence and insult; our supplications have been disregarded; and we have been spurned, with contempt, from the foot of the throne! In vain, after these things, may we indulge the fond hope of peace and reconciliation."

Patrick Henry saw clearly what was coming and he judged correctly that colonists would have to fight against their own government. It was simply common sense, he believed: "I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past. And judging by the past, I wish to know what there has been in the conduct of the British ministry for the last ten years to justify those hopes with which gentlemen have been pleased to solace themselves."

His conclusion, of course, is world-renowned, and it remains an instructive lesson for our time.

    Excellent article. We must take a lesson from Patrick Henry and read the signs of an impending attack on our liberty and our person. We are long past remonstrance and petition, and long past the hope and earnest pursuit of compromise with Obama. It is IMPOSSIBLE. As he said, ''I won.'', and he intends to use his victory to carry out anything he wills.

    Just shows that there is nothing new under the sun and that all despotic governments in history have used the same tactics of disarming the citizenry while building their own cache of weaponry to be used against them.Those who complied with the government, became slaves to it, and with few exceptions, those who resisted were able to defend themselves against those tyrants and secure their freedom.

    Those who don't learn from history are apt to repeat it and like Patrick Henry I will never bow to the throne of Obama or any other man.

    If America had heeded Patrick Henry's warnings to the Virginia constitutional ratifying convention and refused to adopt the Constitution and instead established the government upon Yahweh's immutable morals as codified in His commandments, statutes, and judgments, none of this would be occurring:

    "…I say our privileges and rights are in danger. …the new form of Government … will … effectually …
    oppress and ruin the people…. In some parts of the plan before you, the great rights of freemen are endangered, in other parts, absolutely taken away….       You seem to think some magical form of government will cure the faults of human nature, but you are mistaken. Paul told us what we need to maintain liberty and society: “Watch, stand fast in the faith, be men, be strong, Let all your things be done with love.” (1st Co. 16:13-14) It is the responsibility of the people to maintain what the Christian Founding Father’s founded, and it is here that failure lies, not in the Founders. No matter how many scriptures we codify into law, it will still be carried out by imperfect men who are prone to corruption.

      So lets evaluate your plan some. You offer up this idea as better than what our Christian Founders began for us, but your proof is lacking. Please provide answers for these questions. Where in Scripture does it mandated we set up a theocracy in this New Covenant age?

      Why a theocracy form of government over the other types of government God ordained in the Bible?

      One of your main premises is that it will work better than the government set up by the Christian Founding Fathers. How is this true when this theocracy, when enacted by ancient Israel fell, was invaded, enslaved, and or conquered over and over. Not staying free for more than 40 years at a time, while the government founded and intended by our Christian Founding Fathers has remained free for over 200 years.         David, thank you for another opportunity to share with others these vital truths from Scripture. Theocracy is inherent in the First Commandment (Thou shalt have no other gods before me). Consequently, unless you don't believe the First Commandment is
        still relevant under the New Covenant, theocracy is not only mandated but unavoidable.

        When one understands that the principal means by which we keep the First Commandment is by observing Yahweh's other moral laws (of course, under the New
        Covenant, through Christ as Lord and Savior, motivated by love) and that idolatry is not so much about statues as it is statutes, it becomes clear that all governments are theocratic, serving either the true God or some false god, demonstrated by what laws they keep and consider the supreme law of the land.

        Furthermore, it needs to be understood that all non-existent false gods (1 Corinthians 8:4-6) always have been and always will represent we the people in one form or another.

        Theocracy is also inherent in Romans 13:1-4, 1 Corinthians 6:1-4, 2 Corinthians
        10:4-6, 1 Timothy 1:8-11, etc.

Dr. Frazer proves by their writings (without cherry picking them) that they were neither Deists in the purest sense of the word, nor were they Christians in the Biblical sense of the word.           Ted R. Weiland , is very correct. The bible says, "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people", see also Isaiah 60:12 "For the nation and kingdom that will not serve you shall perish; those nations shall be utterly laid waste". How can nonChristians lead a nation in and with righteousness since they are not righteous and know not the way of righteousness as defined by the bible? The people who are running governments as it seems right to them in their own eyes rather than by the righteousness the bible, make their own selves their own gods and are sinning against the God of the bible. They have created their own sinful theocracy.

          The bible has all the laws, rules, etc. for all of life and our existence on every level, both as individuals and as a people collective including that of a nation, see for example 2 Timothy 3:16-17 "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work" - (New American Standard Bible). The scripture is all sufficient for all of life and existence for both individuals and a people collective including that of a nation.

          We can't escape having a theocracy, it will be either man's or God's. Who make(s) the laws, rules, etc. for a country's, state's, etc. political-economic-social system is/are its god(s)/God. Its either God or man. Its God if we rule according to the bible recognizing it to be the constitution and the law of the land and of all of creation, from God. Its man as god if we do what seems right in our own eyes.

I was in a truckstop in Cameo Co. there was a trivia/advertisement paper that had hotdog trivia for national hotdog week. a question was, What royalty member served hotdogs at a royal ANNUAL banquet? answer Queen of England to The american Bar association. My question is what does she have to do with the ABA? Then I read an article in an old news paper from the BBC where she had to rush to British Parliment to settle a dispute on American social security benefits? What is wrong with this picture? The word BAR in Bar association is always in capital letters because it is an abbreviation for British Admiralty Rule. We never really truelly broke away from Great Britain. The constitution is a big hoax! George Washington declared war on Pennsylvania farmers to surpress The wiskey rebellion. They rebelled the 3 cent a gallon tax to pay the war debt owed to France. Ironically the king of France was just a puppet king the real king was king George of Englane who financed both sides of the war to create a debt to the colonies and to rein them in and control them a little more. Alot of the founding fathers knew this they wrote the constitution to protect themselvesonly, the others made them install the bill of rights. What George and his cronies did not know was King George gave all of his holdings to the Vatican to pay his debts. They knew exactly what to write or say. Their understanding of the language was impeccable. They put the mccain clinton, both, obama, all of them to shame. We have biden, they had Adams.       If you've ever seen a McGuffy's reader ( The graded primers that were widely used as textbooks in American schools from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century) you would think that they were textbooks for today's 12th grader or higher.

      The original purpose of the first American schools was so that children could learn reading (by phonics), writing, arithmetic, and be able to ultimately read and study the bible. The Readers emphasized spelling, vocabulary, and formal public speaking, using British poetry and Bible passages for recitation and memorization.

      America is a country that was built on biblical moral values. God is praised in the pledge of allegiance, on our money and at one time He even was praised in our schools. Times have drastically changed and the biblical principals the country once valued seem to have been lost, and, God forbid, our children should learn about them in today's public schools.

      Kids are left to the mercy of many godless, leftist teachers who have no moral compass and then we wonder what is happening to the younger generation.

        They have infiltrated and taken over our schools, universities, media, and all three branches of government.
        Don't be fooled by the apparent dichotomy between the Ds and the Rs. Both parties are in cahoots (at least the leadership/old guard) and strictly limit our choices come election time.

        We home schooled our children and we used the McGuffy reader, they are excellent. The biggest thing it shows is how from year to year the children have been dumbed down. When many HS grads from government indoctrination centers can't read, can't do basic math, can't find anything on a map, don't know who the VP, speaker of the house etc are and the list goes on and on. They are taught that immorality is OK, they are taught that stealing from the rich is OK. They are taught that no matter what kind of trouble or bad decisions you make, it's not your fault and the list goes on ad nauseum. What most of the uneducated don't realize is that the primary reason for school was to teach children to read so that they could read the Bible with understanding.

If our government had remained within the limits of our Constitution, our nations foundation would have remained intact and rock solid. Ironically, we have noone to blame except ourselves for, while "We the People" have awakened from our slumber, we were complacent for far too long. And, while we napped, the tyrannical beast fed and grew to enormous proportions, making itself more formidable and dangerous.     I can only judge Pres. Obama's motives by the past history of other tyrants who have sought to subjugate their "constituents." My questions are these: Why has Obama's Dept. of Homeland Security purchased and stockpiled 1,600,000,000 rounds of armor piercing ammunition? Why has that same DHS purchased thousands of AR-15 assault rifles? Why also has DHS purchased 2,717 armored vehicles? Why has the Social Security Administration purchased and stockpiled millions of rounds of that same ammunition with assault weapons included? Why, as I have learned this morning, has the National Oceangraphic Administration (NOAA) purchased and stickpiled millions of rounds of ammunition? Does the Obama adminstration have to use force to get the weather to cooperate. The words of our Patriot Father, Patrick Henry are clear...It is for absolutely no good that this is being done. Remember in 2008, candidate Obama said..."I believe that this nation should have a "Civilian Security Force" as well funded, equipped, and trained as the US Military." Does it make you wonder why Obama is gutting the US Military. Why? Why? Why? Then comes the Sandy Hook tragedy...and BINGO...Obama and his minions get what they need to begin destroying the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution..."The Right of the PEOPLE to KEEP, and BEAR ARMS, shall NOT be INFRINGED. The question is to all of us...are we also preparing and stockpiling what we would need to confront tyranny? I would hope so. God Bless.     The premise of the TEA party was to alert others that the government is starting to act like King George and is taxing us on frivolous things. The constitution was a document that layed out the governments role and reaffirm our God given rights. Obama believes that the constitution doesn't apply to him because he feels like he is above the law. His cronies in congress don't even care for the people, they want the power, they use people to get votes, promise them "gifts" that eventually will break the bank. I was really taken aback after hearing my congressman state he didn't care about the deficit, he wanted higher taxes and immigration reform, and as long as everybody is spending it is putting money in circulation. He has no concern about debt, unemployment, or wasteful spending; sad part is this is the thinking of all democrats in office, because they seem to reject ideas from republicans that does not include a tax hike. We are heading for a recession, more worse than 1930; the 3 indicators are: stock market hitting new highs, businesses reducing work force, and congress is so divided.

    If the framers had not banned Christians tests and thereby Biblical qualifications in Article 6, we wouldn't have the nincompoops, scoundrels, and criminals occupying all three branches of both federal and state governments.     While we must point the primary "finger" at our President, we should not let the House of Representatives "off the hook". That agency controls the purse strings of all government spending and they too must be held accountable----surely someone there noticed this expenditure. Everyone should be asking their congresspersons, why the purchase, why the amount, and for just what exact purpose! Without explanations, it would appear that the administration and DHS (and perhaps FEMA) actions are premeditated and some very ulterior motives are involved---If so, perhaps we can use some of the ammo for public firing squads, as it appears there are many individuals involved.
