Adios! Sayonara! Hasta la vista! NO MAS! Translation: Goodbye! No more! As in, no more sanctuary cities! At least not in Texas anyway!
Texas Governor, Greg Abbott, just signed a law on Sunday that bans such cities that harbors fugitives, such as illegal immigrants. This isn’t just a flimsy ban though, with no punch behind it. It comes with the punishment of fines, firing, and even jail time for law enforcement who are non-compliant.
Abbott stated, “Citizens expect law enforcement officers to enforce the law. Citizen deserve law breakers to face legal consequences.”
Also, before the question can arise as to whether local jurisdictions can decide whether want to enforce the law or not, Abbott has address that too! He said, “Elected officials and law enforcement agencies, they don’t get to pick and choose which laws they will obey.”
Daily Wire reports:
The law, which will take effect Sept. 1, orders all law enforcement officials to work with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents (sanctuary cities vow not to aid the feds in any way). More, the law requires local law officials to honor agency “detainers,” which are requests by the federal government to hold someone until it is determined whether the detainee should be deported.
Abbott slammed Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez for refusing to honor such detainers. “This law cracks down on policies like [those held by] the Travis County sheriff, who declared that she would not detain known criminals accused of violent crimes,” said Abbott. “Those policies are sanctuary city policies and won’t be tolerated in Texas.”
The governor also referred to the murder of Kate Steinle, killed by illegal alien Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez in San Francisco — a sanctuary city — saying that refusing to enforcer the law has “deadly consequences.”
The Washington Post slammed Abbott for signing the bill on Sunday night, “thereby avoiding demonstrations opponents planned for later in the week when they thought he was going to put his signature on the legislation.”
“While Abbott’s spokesman said he was just trying to reach a wide audience, critics called Abbott ‘cowardly’ for springing the signing without notice,” The Post said.
Look out boys, there’s a new sheriff in town…..one that isn’t scared to actually enforce laws! Whoo! Abbott doesn’t care if people are upset with him. He closed out his remarks with a strong statement: “Texas has now banned sanctuary cities in the Lone Star state.”
