Ever since the federal government got involved in the public education system in 1867, it has helped to deteriorate the level and scope of education. Originally created as the Department of Education in 1867 by President Andrew Johnson, a liberal Democrat, the federal department was demoted to a minor bureau in 1868 within the Department of the Interior.
In 1939, the Interior Department transferred the bureau to the Federal Security Agency who renamed it the Office of Education. In 1953, the Federal Security Agency was promoted to become the Department of Health, Education and Welfare which made it part of the president’s Cabinet.
In 1979, another liberal Democratic president by the name of Jimmy Carter, separated the education part of the DHEW and made it its own Cabinet position as the Department of Education.
Since that time, the ED (DOE is used for the Department of Energy) has grown from 3,000 employees with an annual budget of $12 billion to nearly 4,200 and annual budget of $77.4 billion and growing.
If you want to know just how vital and important the Department of Education is, consider the fact that in the Sequestration government shutdown last year, nearly 95% of the ED employees were furloughed because they were deemed non-essential. They furloughed 3,983 of their 4,195 employees, leaving a mere 212 people to run the entire department.
Since Carter’s move to upgrade the Department of Education, the quality of America’s public education has been steadily declining. At one time we were among the world’s top country in education and producing scientists, engineers, doctors and many other top professions. But we are sliding from that pinnacle and the rate of descent has been steadily increasing.
One of the more recent blunders produced by ED, with the help of a number of state governors, is the Common Core Standards. I’ve written a few articles about the problems with Common Core and how it seems to be more of a socialist training program than a real educational program.
Over the past year Common Core has been coming under more and more scrutiny and criticism. Indiana’s Gov. Mike Pense has already opted out of Common Core for his state and is working to replace it with a program of their own. Maine’s Gov. Paul LePage says he regrets signing Common Core into law in his state.
A recent Rasmussen Report indicated that 69% of the American people believe that the US is not producing graduates that will help keep the US competitive with the rest of the world. Only 17% said they believe we are producing a world-class education. It’s true, only the world class we are producing is globalism instead of American patriotism and pride.
Another Rasmussen Report shows that parental support of Common Core has been steadily declining. Last November, 52% of parents with kids in elementary or secondary school favored requiring all schools to adhere to the Common Core Standards. In the most recent survey, only 34% said yes to the same question, a drop of 18% in only 7 months. Seven months ago, 42% of the parents said Common Core would help improve student performance. That has dropped to 37%.
With the growing criticism and loss of support, you have to wonder just how much longer the socialist liberals will hang onto Common Core, but knowing them, they will fight tooth and nail to keep the commie training program. And if you don’t believe me that Common Core is a socialist training program, consider what happened at Nonnewaug High School in Woodbury, Connecticut.
Andrew Lampart a student at the school was preparing for a debating event. To help him prepare, he tried searching for conservative websites. The more he searched, the more he found that the school had blocked a number of them. Some of the conservative sites that were blocked included The Republican Party, the Vatican, the National Right to Life group pro-traditional marriage sites and the NRA. However, when Lampart search for liberal sites, he had no problem accessing The Democratic Party, Planned Parenthood, LGBT, pro-gun control and Islamic sites.
After going through the chain of command – principal to superintendent to school board – Lampart waited two months to before hearing anything about the censoring of conservative websites. The superintendent wrote a letter to parents and people in the community because the issue had blown on them. The letter blamed the school’s internet filter, saying it was intended to protect minors from inappropriate material that could have violence, hatred, racism, cults, the occult and other dangerous information. The principal also stated that she was surprised to find out that liberal sites were allowed because they were listed in the ‘not rated’ category which was not blocked, but the conservative sites fell into the ‘political/advocacy groups’ which are blocked to students but not teachers.
But she never addressed who assigned the liberal and conservative sites to their respective groups.
Conservative actor Chuck Norris wrote about what happened with Andrew Lampart and his high school and said:
“Mrs. Superintendent, there’s no surprise or mystery here. The problem is not the software but those programming it. As long as you have liberal-minded architects across the spectrum who only want to steer kids in their own particular secular and progressive direction, changing Internet filters all day long isn’t going to change the educational outcome; students will be prohibited from conservative education. Website accessibility is no different from choosing textbooks or instructors in classes; if liberals are in control, liberalism is the education.”
“A high school’s prohibiting conservative views isn’t shocking to any of us who for decades have watched the dilapidating state of public education. It’s just one more sign that public schools are little more than secular progressive indoctrination camps.”
“Andrew was exactly right when he said about his Internet education experience — or lack thereof: ‘This is really borderline indoctrination. Schools are supposed to be fair and balanced towards all ways of thinking. It’s supposed to encourage students to formulate their own opinions. Students aren’t able to do that here at the school, because they are only being fed one side of the issue.’”
“Out of the mouth of babes.”
“True education doesn’t fear alternative views or even falsehoods, though they should be couched in age-appropriateness and a venue where options are presented with evidence. At least, that was the educational belief of our Founding Fathers and those who followed them for a few generations…”
“Roughly 30 years ago, Dr. Allan Bloom wrote these words of warning about a country and educational system that were mimicking fascism more than they were freedom, in his now classic book ‘The Closing of the American Mind’: ‘True openness is the accompaniment of the desire to know, hence of the awareness of ignorance. To deny the possibility of knowing good and bad is to suppress true openness.’”
“There is also no doubt about this: When we fear alternative views to the extent that we eliminate them from curricula, we have reduced education to nothing more than tyranny and indoctrination.”
“As Bloom said, ‘freedom of the mind requires not only, or not even especially, the absence of legal constraints but the presence of alternative thoughts. The most successful tyranny is not the one that uses force to assure uniformity but the one that removes the awareness of other possibilities.’”
“(If you haven’t seen the movie ‘God’s Not Dead,’ which addresses the very heart of this academic issue, please see it. If you can’t find it in a local theater, try to find it at a church in your area that has bought a license to show it. For more information, go to http://godsnotdeadthemovie.com.)”
Need I say more? If you are a parent of a child in the public education system, you have the responsibility to find out what your child(ren) are being taught and what they are not allowed to have access to. If the school won’t cooperate, it’s time for you to seriously consider the options of homeschooling or private schooling, if at all possible.
If you don’t take an active role in your child’s public education, you have only yourself to blame. Their future is in your hands. If you blindly turn them over to the public schools, don’t be surprised when he/she/they grow up to be good government loving socialists who turn away from all of your religious and moral values and principles.
