President Obama recently visited Oklahoma so conservatives across the state took the opportunity to greet the President in style, with protests and rallies bemoaning his horrible tenure. In the town of Durant, protestors specifically wanted to let the President know that they don’t believe that the Confederate flag is a symbol of hate but of heritage. The man leading the crowd was one Andrew Duncomb, who also calls himself “the Black Rebel.”
“We don’t believe it’s a symbol of racism,” Duncomb says. A fellow protester added, “Hell, I’m just out here supporting my flag, not racists, I don’t want no [sic] problems with anybody.”
Duncomb continued, “They’re blaming the racist problems on the flag and not on the real problems of America. Through the race lies the people who carry and harbor the hate inside. Again, look at these people, they all followed the black guy out here. Do you think that any of them are racists.”
At one point Duncomb was accosted by a woman who disagreed with his view of the flag saying, “Sir, I’m letting you know that this flag right here represents hate.”
Duncomb responded, “I’m letting you know that all these people out here right here do not believe it’s about hate, they believe it’s about heritage.”
Look, I can’t pretend to see into the hearts and minds of every Confederate flag waving Southerner, nor do I want to… but it seems to me that there should be enough question as to motives (on both sides of the debate) that both sides should stop making assumptions about WHY people fly the flag. Liberals need to get over their politically collect hive-mind infatuation and stop trying to ban everything they don’t personally like, and conservatives would do well to remember that there are some racists flying the Confederate flag. At one point Duncomb argues that liberals aren’t focusing on the right issue, and I completely agree with him. Instead of directing their ire at a piece of cloth, perhaps liberals would do better to focus instead on the “real” issue here — the evil that exists inside the hearts of all men.
