Governor Cuomo made a statement about the Boston bombings yesterday:
“‘It’s a terrible situation in Boston. And, unfortunately, … one gets the sense that this is more reflective of the ‘new normal,’ if you will,’ he explained. ‘So much of society is changing so rapidly. We talk about a “new normal” when it comes to climate change and adjusting to a change in the weather patterns. “New normal” when it comes to public security in a post-9/11 world. Where these random acts of violence, which at one time were implausible, now seem all-too-frequent.’”
It was unfortunate for the eight-year-old boy who was killed, his brain-damaged mother, and his leg-amputated sister, or the other victims dead or maimed. it was much more unfortunate for them than for any political leader. These politicians have their own bodyguards, a 24/7 force of detectives working to give them ample warning (not highly competent, but still more than the hoi polloi get), and permission to go into hiding and still get paid for their “job.”
I don’t think Cuomo is even on topic here because so far all I see are two young guys acting like sociopaths. I don’t see any real connection to terrorists. They just let themselves get inspired by them. This is probably more like the kids at Columbine than a real international attack. But that’s not Cuomo’s interpretation, so let’s consider his perspective on the basis of what he thinks.
When George W. Bush decided that it was time to turn on the State Department’s asset in Iraq, Saddam Hussein, and fundamentally change the arrangement with Saudi Arabia (his good friends and business partner—a relationship also shared to some extent by the Clintons and Obama) so that we stationed non-Islam foreign troops in Arab territory, he never told the voters how this would offend some of the worst of the worst in the Middle East. Just like before, when Carter’s advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski, created and financed the Mujahideen without thinking about the rest of us. Obama is making the situation much worse, empowering Jihadists in places like Libya and Syria while using drone strikes elsewhere that can only boost their recruitment.
So, assuming the Boston Marathon bombings were truly foreign in origin, not just local terrorism in support a foreign cause (note: not identical to typical domestic terrorism blamed on “the right”), and not just an FBI sting “gone live,” then it is obviously not simply caused by 9/11. It wasn’t Islamic terrorism that changed on that date, it was American foreign policy. The government took whatever policy might have stimulated hatred and doubled, tripled, quadrupled down on it. First, we ignored bin Laden and invaded Afghanistan complete with a “new government,” and then we fulfilled one of bin Laden’s dreams by overthrowing Saddam Hussein so that someone else could run secret prisons, secret police, and torture chambers—only at the price of thousands of American lives.
If you stir up a hornet’s nest near my children while wearing protection from the insects’ attacks, I know you are not the one who stung the children to death, but I also know you share in the responsibility. And if you presume to lecture me about “the new normal,” you should understand why I start hating everything you stand for.
We have been led into an incredibly dangerous and rewarding situation—one dangerous for ordinary people but rewarding to the political class as they gain new power after new power every time they fail to protect us.
