Democrat Representative Wants Amendment to Restrict Free Speech

In what may turn out to have been an opening salvo by Democrats, now that President Obama has secured four more years in office, a Democrat representative from Georgia told an audience back in October that there needs to be a constitutional amendment to curb free speech.

“We need a constitutional amendment to allow the legislature to control the so-called free speech rights of corporations,” Rep. Hank Johnson told an audience of bobble-heads at the Annesbrooks HOA Candidate Forum.

According to Johnson, evil corporations are controlling people’s thought patterns, and that’s why there are people who oppose liberal policies.

“They control the patterns of thinking,” said Johnson. “They control the media. They control the messages that you get. So, you are being taught to hate your government — don’t want government, but keep your hands off of my Medicare by the way. I mean, we are all confused people and we’re poking fingers at each other saying, well you’re black, you’re Hispanic, immigration, homosexuals. You know, we’re lost on the social issues, abortion, contraception.”

“They” are controlling the transmission. “They” will control the horizontal. “They” will control the vertical. “They” can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. “They” will control all that you see and hear. …

Sorry, “Outer Limits” flashback. Or Obamanation flash forward.

I followed him up to the part about media controlling the messages we receive, but it takes a highly selective point of view not to notice that the mainstream media are overwhelmingly pro-liberal, hardly the hate-your-government types. And since he mentions Medicare, let’s just assume he’s actually referring to elderly Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity fans.

The next two lines about pointing fingers, separating people into categories, and focusing on abortion and contraception sounds like he’s talking about the Democratic Party, but I’m sure in his mind it’s all part of a vast right-wing conspiracy, the only kind of conspiracy that exists on the Left’s Bizarro Earth.

But here’s my favorite part of the speech:

“And these folks,” Johnson said, “are setting up a scenario where they’re privatizing every aspect of our lives as we know it. So, wake up! Wake up! Let’s look at what’s happening. We need a constitutional amendment to allow the legislature to control the so-called free speech rights of corporations.”

So speak up, America. Speak up for the home of the brave. Speak up for the land of the free gift with purchase. Speak up, America!

Sorry. Elle Woods moment.

Seriously, though. “Privatizing every aspect of our lives as we know it”?

I’m trying to think of ANYTHING that has been privatized since Obama Claus came to town.

Anyone? Bueller?

But let’s just suspend disbelief for a moment. If government programs were being privatized, chances are that private enterprise could find a way to do it better, and that would be a good thing in most people’s estimation. You would actually increase personal freedom while improving available services.

In Johnson’s view, that adds up to a screaming need to shut corporations the heck up. I wonder how his own corporate donors feel about that? His last campaign raked in thousands from Coca Cola, Lockheed, General Dynamics, New York Life Insurance, Bank of America … hey, wait a minute, aren’t banks the No. 1 bogeyman these days? Hmm. …

Johnson, by the way, is the same representative who in a 2010 House committee meeting worried aloud that stationing 8,000 Marines on Guam would cause the island to capsize.

Seriously.

Still, we should not underestimate the Left’s desire to curtail free speech, or at least speech that opposes the liberal viewpoint. The phrase “Fairness Doctrine” has been bubbling up in Democrat meetings since the election was stolen.

Out of the mouths of babes and babbling idiots. …
