Barack Obama and many Democrats continue to use the excuse of environmental concerns to block the approval and partial funding of the Keystone XL Pipeline. They contend that pipelines can leak or rupture, spilling crude which damages the environment. They cited some of the spills and leaks that have happened over the years with the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline that carries crude oil from Prudhoe Bay on Alaska’s northern shore to Valdez, Alaska some 1280 miles south along Alaska’s southern shore.
Supposedly, they claim that transporting crude oil via train is safer than using a pipeline. Chances of a spillage or environmental disaster are greatly reduced using the rail lines, but actual evidence may undermine that argument.
Just this week, a train carrying crude oil from the North Dakota Bakken oil fields south to refineries, derailed just three miles outside of Galena, Illinois, the home of former President Ulysses S. Grant. The train had 103 cars filled with crude oil, some of which burst into flame upon being derailed. The small rural town was not equipped to handle the intense flames of the spilled crude oil. Firefighters were only able to reach part of the fire from a bike path, but their equipment was unable to push back or contain any of the flames.
Using railroad cars to transport crude oil has greatly increased in recent years. In 2008, there were about 9,500 rail cars transporting crude oil. In 2014, that had increased to around 500,000 rail cars, and the number of railroad accidents involving rail cars carrying crude oil have also drastically increased. Since 2008, a number of 70,000 gallon oil tank cars have ruptured and ignited in multiple derailments.
In 2013, the derailment and fire of oil rail cars resulted in the deaths of 47 people in a Quebec town. In February, a train carrying 3 million gallons of North Dakota crude oil derailed in West Virginia during a snow storm. Fireballs were seen shooting through the sky and thousands of gallons of oil spilled into a river tributary causing the evacuation of hundreds of families living the in the area.
It’s actually safer for the environment and the pubic to transport oil through pipelines like the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline and the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline. However the Obama administration refuses to consider the safety and cost of using pipelines to transport crude oil. Instead, they are looking at new safety regulations for the railroads that would require thicker metals used in constructing tanker cars and equipping them with shields to prevent crumpling or rolling over. They also have suggested requiring electronic brakes on every car that would prevent them from ramming into each other.
So why is Obama and his fellow democrats so dead set on blocking the Keystone XL Pipeline which will be safer and cheaper for the transportation of crude oil? It has nothing to do with the environment and everything to do with Obama’s richest supporter, Warren Buffett.
Currently, Canadian crude oil is transported from Canada to the Texas refineries via the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF). This railroad is the second largest freight railroad in North America and a very large part of their business is the transportation of the Canadian oil.
In 2010, BNSF shareholders voted to accept an offer from Berkshire Hathaway to purchase the remaining 77.4% of the company’s stock that they didn’t already own. Berkshire Hathaway is owned by Warren Buffett who is one of the wealthiest men in America and the world.
BNSF Railroad makes about $30 for every barrel of Canadian crude oil they transport to the Texas refineries for an annual income of around $2 billion. If the Keystone XL Pipeline was approved and completed, it is estimated that it would cost only about $10 per barrel to transport the crude oil from Canada to Texas. If that happened, Buffett’s railroad stands to lose nearly $2 billion of annual revenue.
Buffett is a huge donor to Barak Obama and the Democrats. He is also a very powerful and influential man and generally what Buffett says people do. Barack Obama is literally Buffett’s slave in the White House who does everything his master tells him to do. Obama then passes those commands on to the rest of the Democrat slaves who also obey the master’s edict.
This is the real reason why the Keystone XL Pipeline is being blocked and why Obama continues to support the more expensive and dangerous railroad transportation of crude oil. He knowingly lies to the American people about his reason for blocking the Keystone XL Pipeline while putting the safety and lives of Americans at risk, but then Obama has never cared about the American people, has he?
