Do You Remember What Happened on Christmas 1991?

By David W. New, Esq.

Christmas 2011 will be the twentieth anniversary of one of the most forgotten gifts in history. On December 25, 1991, the Soviet Union ceased to exist and the new Russian Federation began. Lost in all the Christmas celebrations for the birth of the Savior of the World was another gift given to us by God that we fail to be thankful for — the fall of the Soviet Empire.

We forget how dangerous the world was when the Soviet Union was in power. The Soviet State was literally a government run by gangsters and criminals. From Lenin to Gorbachev, every Soviet leader achieved and maintained power by sheer terror and muscle. The people’s consent was never sought.

We also forget how much of a menace the Soviet Union was to world peace during its existence. Consider these facts. It was the Soviet Union which made World War II possible. More than 50 million people died during World War II and the Soviet Union was the final trigger which made most of those deaths possible. In August 1939, the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany signed a treaty known as the Hitler Stalin Pact. This agreement between two criminal states sealed the doom of Poland. Stalin and Hitler agreed not to attack each other and to split Poland between them.

On September 1, 1939, Hitler invaded Poland. In response, Great Britain and France, as promised, declared war on Nazi Germany. This began World War II. Before the war was over, human beings were being cooked in ovens by the millions all over Poland. To this day, no one knows how many people died in the Nazi death camps.

In 1962, the Soviet Union engaged in another reckless adventure. This time every living soul on this planet was at risk. The Soviet Union installed nuclear missiles in Cuba. Known as the Cuban Missile Crisis, for thirteen days the U.S. and the U.S. S. R. came to the brink of total nuclear war. By the providence of God the two Super Powers were barely able to avoid World War III.

People sometimes ask me, ‘what evidence do you have for the existence of God?’ If they will not accept the Bible or the Creation as evidence then there is something else available to me to answer their question — Christmas Day.

If they are old enough to remember, I tell them that they have already witnessed very powerful evidence for the existence of God — the fall of the Soviet Union on December 25th. In all of recorded history there never has been a state which had as much power as the Soviet Union that did not fall without a massive loss of human life. And yet this is exactly what happened on Christmas Day 1991.

In my opinion, the fall of the Soviet Union is compelling evidence that God exists and as Ben Franklin said He “governs in the affairs of men.”

What happened in 1991 was truly historic. The Soviet Union literally had enough nuclear weapons to kill every human being on this planet several times over. In a total nuclear war, it will not matter whether you die in a nuclear blast or not. You will die anyway. In a total nuclear war, the earth will become so contaminated with radioactive poison that every person will die. And yet on Christmas Day 1991, not a single nuclear weapon was fired, not even a gunshot was heard. How can we explain this? 6,000 years of human history tells us this cannot happen — and yet it did. God must exist. God intervened on December 25th, 1991 and saved the world from what should have been total destruction! Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye Heavenly Host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. Merry Christmas.
