President Obama has at least kept one campaign promise by signing the certification to end the ‘don’t ask don’t tell’ policy established by President Clinton. After meeting Friday afternoon with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen, Obama said:
As commander in chief, I have always been confident that our dedicated men and women in uniform would transition to a new policy in an orderly manner that preserves unit cohesion, recruitment, retention and military effectiveness. Today’s action follows extensive training of our military personnel and certification by Secretary Panetta and Admiral Mullen that our military is ready for repeal. As of September 20th, service members will no longer be forced to hide who they are in order to serve our country.
The military has already had numerous problems (legal, moral and disciplinary) since allowing females to actively serve along males. Their have been scandals, court battles, physical and sexual abuse, rape and even murder, due to the two sexes serving in close and confined quarters.
Now Obama and the military leaders believe that allowing homosexuals to also openly serve alongside straight members of the military will preserve the cohesion of the military. That’s like using a water soluble mortar on a house in a rainy climate. In time the brickwork is going to weaken and fall apart.
I for one would not feel comfortable or cohesive sharing a foxhole or tent with an openly gay man just as I would not want to with a child abuser, rapist, bank robber or murderer. It goes against everything I believe and stand for. I am certain that once members of the military start coming out of the footlocker that there will be an increase in abuse, harassment and violence within the ranks of the military.
