The Indiana Senate approved a bill that would have allowed creationism to be taught alongside evolution in public school classrooms. It would have been taught as an alternative theory on the origins of life.
The creationism bill then was sent over to the state House for consideration. The House revised the bill to allow the teaching of origin theories from multiple religions including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Scientology.
As a result of the revision, House Speaker Brian Bosma decided to table the bill because he believed it would result in a costly legal battle. Additionally, Robert Behning, chairman of the House education committee, said that it would be quite difficult for most school districts to find teachers with the necessary knowledge of origin theories from all of the different religions.
I’ve been an avid supporter of biblical creationism and have been involved in creation ministry for over twenty years. And I’ve always been an advocate of teaching both creationism and evolution in the public school class room, however, I also have a concern about how it is to be taught.
There are a number of various views of biblical creationism and only one of them involves a young earth view. The other creation theories (Gap theory, day-age, progressive creationism, Framework Hypothesis and theistic evolution) all teach some form of long ages which in turn promote a compromised understanding of Scripture. For example, theistic evolution is considered to be one of the theories of origins defined as biblical. The only difference between theistic evolution and secular evolution is the insertion of God as being responsible for starting evolution with the Big Bang.
Under most proposed creationism bills that I’ve seen, they would allow for any compromised version of biblical creationism to be taught. In many cases, they could do more harm than just teaching secular evolution as students would have a completely wrong understanding of God, His attributes, character or reason for their need of a Savior.
I’m not as concerned about student’s being taught the origins theories of Islam, Buddhism or any other religion as I am about them being taught compromising and unbiblical theories of creation. I’ve already seen how a little compromise of Scripture can open the door to other compromises of the Bible which in turn leads to a complete collapse of biblical foundations.
