Ukrainian opposition poster girl Yulia Tymoshenko has been released from prison, and the Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych is nowhere to be found at this writing.
Opposition groups and journalists have been able to freely walk into the presidential residence grounds and the police have apparently abandoned their posts after the signing of a “peace treaty” on Friday that did nothing to quell the protests in Ukraine’s capital city of Kiev. The Parliament has officially removed Yanukovych, who rumor has it has fled the country.
As of this morning, Kiev is a changed city.
The White House has yet to give an official response, but just a day ago, President Obama was “urgently” considering sanctions against the elected Ukrainian government for cracking down on protesters who were trying to occupy the capital.
“We are outraged by images of Ukrainian security forces firing automatic weapons on their own people,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
Once again, the White House’s foreign policy is schizophrenic. In Egypt, President Obama backed the election of Mohammed Morsi, a Muslim Brotherhood figurehead who wanted to impose the tyranny of shariah law on the country. Even when far larger crowds of protesters turned out against Morsi than ever opposed Hosni Mubarak, Obama still backed the Brotherhood. And when Morsi was ousted and the military took over to maintain order, Secretary of State John “I Served in Vietnam” Kerry was right there, touting how the military was “restoring democracy.”
In the Ukraine, the U.S. on the other side of the fence, siding with opposition in yet another government overthrow, as we have been doing in Syria for years, as we did in Egypt against Mubarak, as we did in Libya.
Yanukovych was elected in a ballot that most international authorities agreed was about as free and fair as could be. Aside from him not being Muslim Brotherhood, the White House’s beef with Yanukovych seems to be that he was aligning his government with Russia’s economic union rather than Europe’s.
Obama hates Russia. Specifically, he hates Putin, who has shown him to be a weakling and fraud on the international stage repeatedly. Remember the Syrian poison gas “crisis” that Obama wanted to go to war over? The whole campaign failed when Putin’s ambassadors announced an easily-achieved settlement, leaving the Peace Prize president with egg on his face, looking like an impotent warmonger.
Obama’s ongoing support for the rebels in Syria is ultimately a conflict with Russia and its ally Iran. The “negotiations” with Iran are intended to try to show up Putin the way he showed up Obama in front of the world, in addition to finally earning Obama some street cred for that phony Nobel he was handed at the beginning of his Administration.
The situation in Ukraine is similarly another chance to make Putin look bad.
So is this America’s standard now? Democracy and fair elections are good only until an angry mob shows up on the capitol doorsteps demanding resignations and revenge?
Apparently so, as long as it strokes Obama’s ego.
You have to wonder how Obama would react to a mob of Tea Partiers camping on the White House lawn.
