We get it. The Islamists have won in Libya before we even acknowledged that they had declared war. But was the half gainer really necessary?
A YouTube video, since removed, showed Libyan Islamists inside the buildings of the U.S. embassy in Tripoli on Sunday. U.S. officials have said it’s “just” an annex, not the main building, as if that makes it better.
We’re talking Tripoli, as in “from the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli,” capital of the first foreign power we defeated after the Revolution.
The First Barbary War was fought because President Thomas Jefferson refused to pay the protection money and ransoms demanded by the Muslims of his day in the Mediterranean.
Let history show that the U.S. embassy in that fabled city was lost because President Barack Obama refused to do anything to stop the resurgence of Islamic terrorism in Libya, Iraq and other parts of the Middle East, even after saying as recently as June of this year that “the world is less violent than it has ever been” and after campaigning in 2012 that he personally had killed Osama bin Laden and had terrorism “on the run” around the world.
June of this year, by the way, was when somebody in the State Department had the good sense to tell U.S. personnel to abandon the Tripoli embassy because of the way things were going, so at least we don’t have to reckon with any more dead Americans in Libya for the moment. The last personnel left under armed escort on July 26.
As embarrassing as this loss of our embassy is, the members of Operation Dawn, the nom de plume of the local Islamist group, were not about to let things go without rubbing our faces in what they’d done.
So they made a few phone calls, hustled up some journalists and threw an open house.
The YouTube video had shown Islamist personnel chillin’ on the patio by the pool, with some of them diving in from an overhanging balcony.
The embassy annex is apparently about a mile from the main embassy compound, which realistically is just a crowbar away from being taken by anyone who cares to walk in.
As of this writing, there has been no response from the White House. Considering Obama has had several months and hasn’t adopted a strategy for ISIS, an abandoned embassy building isn’t likely to get him off the golf course.
The Operation Dawn Islamists have invaded U.S. soil, which is what an embassy is. In a phrase, it’s an act of war, although luckily no one died this time. But Obama didn’t do anything when our mission in Benghazi was attacked and four Americans murdered, so don’t expect any action now.
Maybe Obama could bring the fellas drinks poolside and help them apply their suntan lotion. After all, he must be good for something.
