Making Obama Macho: Campaign Touts Killing of Bin Laden

It seems like an impossible task, but the Obama campaign is trying to make the man-boy president look like a tough guy.

The occasion is the one-year anniversary of the killing of bin Laden.

Leading the charge is President Bill Clinton, who narrates an attack ad aimed at Mitt Romney, in which the Obama camp suggests that Romney just doesn’t have the kind of guts needed to take out Osama bin Laden.

Clinton’s script talks a lot about how hard it is to make the decision to pull the trigger on a foreign enemy, how it all rests on his shoulders, how horrible it would have been if bin Laden weren’t really there in his compound, etc.

Using Clinton was the only way to go with this particular ad. Really, what other Democrat has any credibility when it comes to talking about dealing with American enemies? While in office, Clinton had a penchant for bombarding foreign targets whenever questions over his affair grew too burdensome, but at least with Clinton you believe the guy would have no qualms about lighting up a country that got too annoying.

You can’t help but wonder about the truth of that story about the Obama camp making death threats to Clinton’s family. Is this ad just the Obama campaign trotting out the trophy? You can almost imagine some White House handler saying, “If you do not wish to cooperate, you would do well to consider your daughter.”

Obama on the other hand had next to no involvement in the actual operation that killed bin Laden. It was all made possible by the hard work of underlings, and ultimately the responsibility was on the heads of those underlings.

A White House memo recently reported on revealed that the entire operation was under the control of Admiral McRaven. From the memo: “The timing, operational decision making and control are in Admiral McRaven’s hands. The approval is provided on the risk profile presented to the President. Any additional risks are to be brought back to the President for his consideration. ”

In other words, if anything went wrong, it was going to be McRaven’s fault.

A barrage of ads, commercials and TV specials, such as “The Road We’ve Traveled,” narrated by Tom Hanks (and starring Joe Biden as Wilson), are working hard to make President Obama into John Wayne.

The focus is understandable. The killing of bin Laden is one of the few truly presidential images in Obama’s career, which for the most part consists of TV show appearances, golfing and exotic vacations.

The reality is the White House itself was unclear on what the mission was, instructing McRaven only to “get” bin Laden.

If the Democrats want us to elect a tough-guy president, maybe we should be looking at Admiral McRaven instead of Obama.
