The arrogance of the mainstream media is an old and well-known story, but their compliance in covering up stories the Obama Administration wants buried still keeps large swaths of the public in the dark about what’s really going on.
One of those stories the media have been sitting on is what really happened in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, when four Americans were killed.
We — meaning those of us who don’t rely just on the mainstream media for our information — have long ago figured out much of the Benghazi story from reading the foreign press and from snippets of information that have leaked or been written up from anonymous government sources. Also, the pattern of evasion by public officials and the string of demotions, reassignments and early retirements connected to Benghazi have all been illuminating.
But despite everything, the mainstream media still looked away, long enough to re-elect an unworthy president and it was probably hoped long enough for the story to be forgotten altogether.
Put two things have happened that now have put some serious cracks in the media wall around Benghazi. One is that congressional Republicans have not let the issue die and have finally been able to get testimony from witnesses that undercuts the lies from the Administration. The second is that CBS reporter Sharyl Attkisson actually did her job and has reported that witness testimony shows U.S. forces were in fact ordered to stand down.
Realistically, this puts the mainstream media about where us “paranoid conservative” blogger types were seven months ago. But still, CBS deserves some kudos for finally using that massive news budget to cover the news, and you can’t say enough good things about the people in Congress who’ve been fighting this uphill battle to get the truth out.
Even Salon had to admit there’s something to all this crackpot Benghazi talk, after all. Here’s a snippet:
“There’s been a lot of smoke in the would-be scandal over the Benghazi attacks, but no real fire yet.
“But that may change when three “whistle-blowers” give what Republicans expect to be explosive testimony this week before Rep. Darrell Issa’s House Oversight Committee. The controversy over the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. consulate and CIA annex in the Libyan city has smoldered, mainly on the right, but the testimony will likely push it back into the mainstream and could be an enormous distraction for an already injured second-term Obama.
“Unlike the vast majority of the new information brought forward by the conservative media since the attack, the three whistle-blowers seem credible.”
Even as the MSM cover story crumbles, you still can hear the condescension: “Unlike conservatives, these guys seem credible.”
If you’re guessing that the media will still try to cover up the story and blame conservatives while they do it, you’d be correct. Salon says as much in the same article.
But notice the passage above hints at the real story behind the cover-up. Disdain for conservatives kept it out of the limelight, and it’s only because now it’s on the agenda for a congressional hearing that the media feel they have to take notice of Benghazi.
When a story like this involves getting off your lazy keister, making phone calls and talking to sources, it’s easy to ignore because it’s a safe bet the public won’t do the work on its own. But when someone comes right out and puts it in black and white on an agenda for Congress, the whole world can see it, so now the lazy media elites have to look like they’re doing something.
It’s still going to be a long fight to get the media to stop covering for the Obama Administration, but at least we conservatives have forced them to admit there is a place called Benghazi where something happened.
