Sticks and stones can indeed break my bones, but names can scar me for life, or get me a 15 yard penalty in the NFL. Is that how the new version of the old saying goes?
I don’t know about you, but I’d rather be called a name then be hit with a stick or have a stone thrown at me.
But then again, unlike Steve Martin in “The Jerk,” I was not born a poor black child. I’m all white with a little redneck thrown in.
So as a white guy “they,” the word police, tell me I am not allowed to utter certain words — words like ni**er, chink, fag, etc.
Question is: Why would anyone use these vile terms at all? I’m offended by them. I can see why others would be. But I also have no right in this country not to be offended. Yet many minority groups believe they do. And liberals in our society feed off and promote it. They thrive on our division.
Recall that poor fool Anthony Frederico. The former ESPN writer who was fired for simply saying that basketball player Jeremy Lin had a “chink” in his armor. Who hasn’t said that? He even apologized profusely for the innocent remark, which he shouldn’t have. Everyone knew what he meant, but that didn’t matter. It was deemed offensive by the “word police.”1
And now the offense word du jour is the dreaded “N” word. Well, it is offensive, but according to black speech law enforcement officers like Jason Whitlock and Michael Wilbon, no white person can voice their Caucasian opinion. Well, too bad. I am nothing, if not opinionated.
As we are well aware, the controversy over the “N” word has trickled into the grand social experiment that is today’s NFL.
So now everyone is wondering how the politically correct fools in the NFL will handle this. We hear of possible penalties for its utterance on the field. What about the sideline? If a ref hears it emanating from the sideline, will the offending team receive a technical foul? Will the opposing team get a free field goal attempt for said offense?
Will white and black players be penalized differently since blacks call other blacks the “N” word and mean it in a good way? Will whites be ejected immediately whereas blacks receive a warning or a 5-yard penalty for their first offense?
Now, we’ve all heard referees announce, on goal line plays, that so and so lineman is reporting as an eligible receiver. Could a coach do the same thing for his white players?
The head referee will announce, “Number 82 is reporting in as a black player. For this series, Joe Whitey will be a black receiver,” thus avoiding the ejection.
“Number 59 is reporting in as a homosexual player for the remainder of the quarter and should be treated as such. All fines and penalties will be waived until the player reverts back to heterosexual status.”
As in society, will different rules apply to different protected classes of players? Really. Is that the way it’s going to go?
The NFL, like the military, has become nothing but a social experiment. The same type of liberal mind-reshaping is turning us into a girlie man, touchy-feely society that’s going to ruin our national pastime.
We had better watch all the football we can in the upcoming seasons. With knee-jerk liberals in charge, within 5 to 10 years, give or take, our national pastime will be unrecognizable, if it’s around at all.
- While not related to sports, three’s the 1999 story of “David Howard, a white aide to Anthony A. Williams, the black mayor of Washington, D.C., [wo] used ‘niggardly’ in reference to a budget. This apparently upset one of his black colleagues (identified by Howard as Marshall Brown), who misinterpreted it as a racial slur and lodged a complaint. As a result, on January 25 Howard tendered his resignation, and Williams accepted it.” [↩]
