What a leader is our president.
With much ballyhoo and bluster, President Obama made a prime-time address to the nation to announce that he’ll airdrop food and some other supplies for some 40,000 Iraqi Christians hiding in the mountains after being driven out of their homes by ISIS, the newly minted caliphate that has taken over most of Iraq.
He’s also authorized airstrikes against ISIS troops.
But not to help the Christians. The airstrikes would only be to protect our personnel. And that’s only if ISIS moves on the cities of Erbil or Baghdad.
And there’s absolutely no way we’re sending in ground troops, Obama promised on a day when ISIS seized another city and took control of Iraq’s largest hydroelectric dam.
He said, “To stop the advance on Erbil, I’ve directed our military to take targeted strikes against ISIL terrorist convoys should they move toward the city. We intend to stay vigilant, and take action if these terrorist forces threaten our personnel or facilities anywhere in Iraq, including our consulate in Erbil and our embassy in Baghdad.”
ISIS has taken over most of Iraq after Obama pulled out all our troops before Iraq was capable of defending itself. They are the same group fighting a civil war in Syria. In Syria, they have for years now received money, personnel and materiel support from the White House because Obama wants a change of regime in that country. Now they are in Iraq, where Obama wants to see a change of regime, using American-made weapons and equipment to overthrow the country that under the Bush Administration American troops expended sweat and blood to stabilize and to provide a chance at democracy.
Curiously, ISIS seems not to have threatened any U.S. personnel in Iraq during this whole process.
But isn’t it good to know that Obama might bomb ISIS troops should the day ever arrive that U.S. personnel are threatened?
Meanwhile, back at that thing on the mountaintop where thousands of Christians are dying and starving because they find that preferable to voluntarily attending one of ISIS’ beheading and crucifixion sessions, U.S. troops have delivered 5,300 gallons of fresh drinking water and 8,000 meals. With some 40,000 Christians suffering, that’s about one-eighth of a gallon of water per person. And that’s one-fifth of one meal per person. In the desert.
“Today America is coming to help,” Obama said.
Help Obama’s poll ratings — that I might believe.
