Obamacare Causes UPS To Cut Benefits To 15,000 Spouses

For many couples who both work, they often have the option to carry family coverage under both employers.  Sometimes, a couple will choose between the two employer provided health plans and opt out of the other.

Due to the continued rising cost of healthcare that is a direct result of the oxymoron named Affordable Care Act, companies are scrambling, trying to figure out how to afford any coverage for their employees.  Hundreds of thousands of Americans are having their hours cut from 40 per week to less than 30 hours per week resulting in over 25% loss of income and loss of benefits.  One report stated that 75% of the 1 million new hires this year have been for part-time jobs as large employers are moving in that direction.   Thousands of other Americans have been laid off because their employers are can’t afford to meet Obamacare requirements.

Now UPS has taken another cost cutting step that will affect over 15,000 of their workers.  On the news, it was reported that UPS said their cost for healthcare coverage increases by at least 7% each year and this next year they are facing an 11% increase in costs.  One of their solutions is to cut coverage to spouses of employees that are eligible for coverage under their own employer.  They anticipate that this measure will save them around $60 million a year.

In a memo that went out to their employees, UPS told them:

“[Increased medical costs] combined with the costs associated with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), have made it increasingly difficult to continue providing the same level of healthcare benefits to our employees at an affordable cost.”

According to Kaiser Health News, the UPS health plan is better than most other companies. The end result will be that the spouses will be forced to accept their own employer coverage which in most cases will cost them more and for possibly less coverage than they could have had under their spouses UPS coverage.

Yet, Obama and Pelosi continue to tell us that the Affordable Care Act is lowering healthcare costs and improving coverage.  They are either completely delusional or they are smoking some pretty powerful stuff.
