The NFL playoffs are upon us. Wildcard weekend has wrapped up. For many it’s an exciting time. For us Patriots fans, it is both old hat and expected.
Yet for most, the close of the regular season just means you had better be a hockey or basketball fan.
The players head off to the golf course and coaches get unceremoniously fired. Then comes the unenviable task of owners and management of having to find a new coach — that rare discovery of the golden wheat amongst the chaff.
Enter the racist “Rooney Rule.” The “Rooney Rule” was named for the Pittsburgh Steelers owners, the Rooney family — namely Dan Rooney, who is also chairman of the leagues’ “Diversity Committee.” Ugh!
In the NFL, the rule stipulates that a team must, at minimum, interview at least one “minority” candidate for a head coaching job or General Manager position. It does not apply to any other team positions.
Why only these positions, you ask? Although other staff and position coaches are quite important, they are not the “face of the team.” It’s symbolism over substance. Every assistant coach on the team could be black but that still wouldn’t be good enough.
Well, you might say, that still sounds “fair.” There needs to be more minority coaches and GMs in the NFL.
So the teams like the Redskins, Vikings (who fired a minority coach), Browns, Lions, and Titans, have already or still must interview at least one black coach. Let’s be real. That’s what they mean. Minority equals black.
So if you’re one of the black coaching candidates, how would that make you feel? The NFL has effectively told you that you can’t get a job without our help. That should boost a person’s self-esteem and self-worth. Evidently, the NFL feels that black coaches aren’t as good as or capable as whites.
So black coaches like Todd Bowles or Jim Caldwell might be shuttled around to half a dozen teams or more as the token blacks, just so teams can satisfy this moronic edict.
Now if I’m not mistaken, this “edict” wasn’t the command of Roger Goodell, the NFL head honcho. It was voted on and approved by the owners of the league’s 32 teams.
So what does that tell you? It tells me that the owners suffer the same affliction as do other wealthy left-leaners : “GWLS” — Guilty White Liberal Syndrome, as well as fear of the racist tag.
Fact is, the NFL has become a microcosm of today’s politically correct girlie man society; easily pressured into making bad decisions.
Look at the emphasis they have put on player safety. I’m not saying there isn’t a problem — there is — but it’s inherent in the game. It is a violent game and it won’t be fixed by fines, penalties, and legislation.
The leagues’ new concussion rules will backfire and have already begun to ruin the game. More players will have their careers ended with blown out knees from low blows than will suffer permanent effects from repeated concussions. You can bet on it.
But this is how it works in sports as it does in politics. Someone or some group decides something is wrong and thus begins the eventual attempt to legislate the “wrong” behavior out of existence.
Years ago someone probably put a bug in Rooney’s ear that blacks need more representation in the NFL coaching ranks, and NFL owners, like their political counterparts, went along for fear of being tagged with the dreaded “racist” Scarlet letter.
To date, the NFL is forcing these hires on teams and owners, but when someone, or group deems the number of black head coaches to be inadequate, that too will change.
