Morgan was extrapolating from new data released by police that showed that the Lanzas had an NRA certificate as well as an NRA guide to pistol shooting in their house. How much do I trust this “new information” coming from the police and the media? Not much.
But for the sake of argument, let’s assume for once that the media narrative is actually trustworthy and correct and not just trying to push a gun control agenda. Does merely having an NRA certificate or a guide published by the NRA lying around in your house mean that you are a member? Of course not. And even if they were members, so what? Richard Feldman, the president of the Independent Firearm Owners Association and former NRA regional political director, reiterated this point:
“[The] NRA certificate just means, I’ll assume, that they either attended a class or obtained the material that’s available in libraries all across the country. It means nothing that they had a certificate. Even if they were members, it means nothing.”
Not surprisingly, the NRA was quick to distance itself from these insinuations from the media that because the Lanzas had some kind of connection to the NRA, NRA members and gun owners as a whole must all be suspected of being serial murderers:
“There is no record of a member relationship between Newtown killer Adam Lanza, nor between Nancy Lanza, A. Lanza or N. Lanza with the National Rifle Association. Reporting to the contrary is reckless, false and defamatory.”
Morgan insinuated that since the NRA were so quick to defend themselves, that must mean they feel a little bit guilty about the connection.
But what was it that Piers Morgan said after it was revealed that the cop-killing cop Chris Dorner left a huge manifesto on his Facebook page which sang the praises of the liberal media and even exalted Piers Morgan on high specifically for his opinions on gun control? Dorner wrote that he agreed with Morgan 100% on guns. And yet, here he was, killing cops and others with guns.
What was Morgan quick to say? “The LA cop-killer murder spree has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with deranged criminality.” Yeah, let’s not be so quick to politicize it.
Chris Dorner had a much clearer connection to Piers Morgan than Lanza did to the NRA. One could easily argue that Chris Dorner was inspired by Piers Morgan. When is Morgan going to apologize to all of Dorner’s victims’ families?
So what if they found pieces of paper in the Lanzas’ house with NRA logos on them. I’m sure they found lots of things. To use Morgan’s words, Lanza’s “murder spree has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with deranged criminality.”
