Four major demographic groups of people were key to electing Barack Obama and helping him pass the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare. They are women, blacks, Hispanics and unions. Obama made numerous promises to these various groups. To women, he promised women’s health reform to all of them to have more access to abortions, abortion drugs and contraceptives. To blacks, he promised more equality and less racism. To Hispanics he promised amnesty to over 11 million illegals.
When it comes to the unions, he promised them that he would work to fight right-to-work laws which would give the unions more power. During the efforts to pass Obamacare, he promised the unions that if they preferred their current health coverage over Obamacare that they would be able to keep it.
Three powerful unions are now accusing Obama and his minions of not keeping their promise concerning their healthcare programs and they’re not happy. The Teamsters, United Food and Commercial Workers, and UNITE-HERE unions have jointly signed a letter addressed to Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) with their concerns about the Affordable Care Act. Part of the letter reads:
“When you and the President sought our support for the Affordable Care Act, you pledged that if we liked the health plans we have now, we could keep them. Sadly, that promise is under threat.”
“The unintended consequences of the ACA are severe. Perverse incentives are already creating nightmare scenarios: First, the law creates an incentive for employers to keep employees’ work hours below 30 hours a week. Numerous employers have begun to cut workers’ hours to avoid this obligation, and many of them are doing so openly. The impact is two-fold: fewer hours means less pay while also losing our current health benefits.”
Isn’t it ironic that the unions are just now starting to realize what many of us have been saying about Obamacare for a couple of years? Other organizations such as the Heritage Foundation, a non-partisan Medicare actuary and even the Congressional budget Office have all said that under Obamacare, healthcare costs would increase and employers would hire fewer people and cut many from full-time to part-time.
But the unions are offering a solution to their dilemma. They want their union-run health plans to be eligible to receive the Obamacare subsidies that were designed to only be used for people with no health coverage. This is typical for liberal Democrats to ask for more government spending to solve their particular problems. In this case, they are asking for millions of subsidy dollars and the special privilege of still being able to maintain their current health programs. If every union and company that has their own healthcare program asked for subsidy money, it would cost the nation billions of dollars that it doesn’t have.
They supported Obama, Reid and Pelosi and now they want special privileges as their reward, regardless of how much it will cost taxpayers. Just one of many reasons why I strongly dislike unions.
