Approximately 5.5 million immigrants who crossed the border illegally or had unknown or improper legal status have received work permits since Barack Obama became president, according to a report released by the Center for Immigration Studies.
The permits issued by executive discretion since 2009 were above and beyond the number of legal immigrants and work visas allowed by law.
Interestingly, Obama’s recent announcement of executive action on immigration aims to put some 5 million illegals on the path to citizenship.
The information was uncovered by the center through a Freedom of Information Act request with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services agency, which operates within the Department of Homeland Security and would be in charge of processing illegals related to Obama’s executive orders.
The 5.5 million figure includes nearly a million who illegally crossed the border; 1.2 million with temporary visas or visa waivers that explicitly do not allow employment in this country; 1.7 million whose status was not known, not recorded or not disclosed; and 1,200 people who were denied asylum, stowaways, caught using fake documents or turned away at a port of entry.
Center Director of Policy Studies Jessica Vaughan said, “I was astonished at the huge number of work permits that are being issued by the Obama administration outside the legal immigration system through executive discretion, especially at a time of high unemployment and stagnant wages. Besides the effect on the American worker, it encourages and rewards more illegal immigration.”
Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions called for a full investigation of this latest immigration scandal. “This massive increase in the labor supply,” he said, “has occurred simultaneously with a steep drop in family incomes and a sharp rise in the number of Americans pushed out of the workforce. … All jobs gains since the recession have gone to foreign workers, while the slack labor market has depressed median family incomes almost $5,000 in that time.”
America has been here many times with this president, who brags about erasing and creating laws at his leisure with his phone and his pen.
Let’s just say that no one should hold their breath while waiting for a “full investigation” to happen.
That said, the Senate is due this week to take up the House-passed bill that would defund Obama’s illegal amnesty, and this report should add to calls to pass it.
Even if it were to pass by some miracle with Democrat support, however, Obama would simply veto it and go ahead with his lawless plans anyway, blaming Congress for making him go all Emperor Palpatine.
If there is any chance at all of stopping Obama’s continual flouting of the law, it’s going to have to be through the Supreme Court.
However, John Boehner’s promise to sue the president has vanished in the post-election wind, along with the last shreds of his integrity and loyalty to the American people, so it’s up to someone else.
Knock, knock, Congress. Any loyal public servants home?
