Sheriff Joe Puts Inmates on Bread and Water for Defacing American Flag

I remember a time in America when our flag meant something important to most Americans.  If someone let the flag accidentally touch the ground they were reprimanded for disrespecting the flag and violating the US Flag Code.

That all changed in the 1960’s with the anti-Vietnam War and Peace Movements.  US flags were trampled, drug through the streets and even urinated on.  Even though it violated the US Flag Code, the courts ruled that such disgrace was legal under the First Amendment right of free speech.  These were the same courts that threw God, the Bible, Jesus, prayer and the Ten Commandments out of our public schools and government offices.

But now, one law enforcement officer is standing up for the American flag and it’s none other than America’s hero cop Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.  Recall that it was Arpaio and his Cold Case Posse that investigated Obama’s birth certificate, Social Security Number and Selective Service Cards and found them all to be fraudulent.

Sheriff Joe is a Korean War veteran and takes his patriotism very strongly.  He makes it an effort to hire military veterans of which there are approximately 600 of them currently working in the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department.  Every morning, the Star Spangled Banner is played throughout the jails and at night the inmates hear God Bless America.

Last November, Sheriff Joe launched his American Jailhouse Flag Initiative where an American flag was hung in every jail cell.  With the initiative, inmates are warned not to deface the American flag or they would be put on bread and water.  Of the nearly 8,000 inmates in the Maricopa County jails, 38 of them have defaced the flags in their cells.  Being a man of his word, those 38 inmates have been placed on a diet of bread, which has a very unappetizing looking vegetable concoction inside, and water for seven days.

Arpaio explains:

“These inmates have destroyed the American flag that was placed in their cells.  Tearing them, writing on them, stepping on them, throwing them in the toilet, trash or wherever they feel. It’s a disgrace … this is government property that they are destroying, and we will take action against those who act this way.”

I applaud Arpaio for his actions and his patriotism.  I just wish more Americans, especially our politicians, would feel as strongly about the American flag and everything it once stood for.  But the way our political leaders treat the flag is a reflection of how they treat the nation and the people.  They don’t care and they have no pride in anything except themselves.  No wonder our nation is going to hell in such a hurry.
