The New Nationalism Is Latino-Centric

When one mentions nationalism, for most people, it conjures up a vision of national pride. A USA, USA -we’re number one, love for America. Some might even refer to this as jingoistic.

Well, not anymore — at least for ThinkProgress and some in Hollywood. You see, as ThinkProgress writes: “Latinos Are Now the Majority in California. Will Hollywood Change to Reflect That?”

I can’t say I’m surprised by this, given that probably 10% of Mexico’s population resides in California. ThinkProgress adds that “by 2060, half of all California residents will be Latino.” I don’t think it will take that long.

So what’s the left’s beef this time? It seems that Latinos aren’t being represented fairly in Hollywood. “In 2013, only 5.2% of network TV writing positions were filled by Latinos, and only 2.7% of directors. Among silver screen actors, they accounted for only 4% of Oscar contenders for the major categories, between 2002 and 2012. They only received 1.6% of the primetime Emmy nods between 2002 and 2013. And the reality is that the vast majority of actors and actresses are relegated to stereotypical roles: maids and criminals.”

But what is Hollywood supposed to do? Heck, on my cable system, there must be 20 or more Spanish language channels as opposed to one, two, maybe three black channels. Sounds to me like they are being represented fairly adequately.

But Latino leftists are still just leftists, and as such, can never be satisfied. “I’m a huge lover of television and of film — I have been my whole life — and when there’s too much of the same thing and not enough to reflect the world that I live in, I take it personally,” said actress America Ferrera.

So I ask again. What is Hollywood to do? They have to pay the bills and do so by means of formulaic films and television. I’m sure they’re sorry that Stan Lee didn’t develop a Latino Ironman or that Star Wars characters aren’t more “ethnic,” but blockbusters pay the bills, so they can make all the crap nobody watches.

Frankly, I don’t know what these activists want. People go to movies and watch television to be entertained, and I’d say, most Americans, regardless of their original heritage aren’t interested in a constant dose of ethnocentric entertainment simply because it’s ethnocentric.

I don’t care whether an actor is black, white, Latino, or whomever — as long as they can act — and I bet most people would agree.

But ThinkProgress writes in defense of the underrepresentation claim that, “Indeed, Latinos bought 25% of movie tickets in 2013. In an interview with the Wrap, Fox President of Domestic Distribution confirmed, ‘You don’t have a major hit without Hispanic moviegoers.’”

Yet really, doesn’t that just prove the opposite? It just shows that “Latinos” are just people like anyone else who pay to be entertained. They’re not pining away for an all Latino movie to hit the big screen to spend their money. They vote with their wallets.

Actor Carlos Carrasco wants us to “Imagine a scenario where suddenly they’re holding back their movie dollars. It would be a huge crisis at the box office, but I think the industry is starting to recognize that.”

Yes, just as liberals always do, they need to lump everyone into a grand collective of blacks or Asians or Latinos, or homosexuals, or whomever. This is the only way to skew the market in their favor. If they merely allowed the marketplace naturally to direct itself they would lose control of the issue and they can’t allow that.

This is just one more example of a tiny minority of activists attempting to gin up a problem that doesn’t exist in the real world — much like Occupy Wall Street, the Confederate flag issue, same-sex marriage, the Washington Redskins, and on and on.
