Ted Cruz brought up Donald Trump’s “New York values.” I suspect that he mostly had New York City in mind, but let’s say that he had the entire state. Of course, Cruz knows that not everyone in New York City and the state at large is a leftist, pro-abortion, pro-homosexual marriage, pro-partial birth abortion supporter.
Cruz was smart to apologize to the people of New York . . . for being stuck with a liberal establishment government. He’s learned something from Trump: Don’t back down . . . double down in a smart way.
But let’s face facts, the majority of the people of the State of New York and NYC elected a pro-abortion and pro-homosexual marriage governor in Andrew Cuomo and a near Communist in NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Cuomo said he wanted to “codify” New York state law “with the federal law to assure abortions could be performed into the ninth month of pregnancy. Although already legal under federal law, he said the state measure is needed in case the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down the Roe v. Wade decision. Cuomo made the issue a crescendo in his 2013 State of the State speech – ‘Because it’s her body! It’s her choice!’” (H/T: Other Issues)
Don’t you find it interesting that if the Supreme Court ever overturns Roe v. Wade, the state of New York will defy the court’s ruling with its own state ruling? If this is OK to do for abortion, then why can’t states reject the court’s ruling on same-sex marriage?
Mayor de Blasio’s views are no different. The same can be said for NYC mayors Michael Bloomberg and Rudy Giuliani. Here’s Giuliani on the late term/partial birth abortion issue:
In 1999, Donald Trump had this to say about late term abortions and his New York City values worldview in an interview with the late Tim Russert:
RUSSERT: Partial birth abortion. Eliminating of abortion in the third trimester. Big issue in Washington. Would President Trump ban partial birth abortion?
TRUMP: Well, look, I’m very pro-choice … and again, it may be a little bit of a New York background, because there is some different attitude in different parts of the country, and you know, I was raised in New York, and grew up and work and everything else in New York City.
RUSSERT: But you would not ban it.
TRUMP: No . . . I am pro-choice in every respect as far as it goes, but I just hate it.
That’s like someone from a pro-slavery state saying, “While I hate segregation and Jim Crow laws, you know, I was raised in the South, so I’m very pro-segregation, but I just hate it.”
What is it about abortion that Trump hates? If it’s because abortion kills a human being, then as a civil official he needs to work to stop it.
Cruz supporters know what New York Values are. “Everyone understands that the values in New York City are socially liberal or pro-abortion or pro- gay-marriage, focus around money and the media.”
It’s likely that the liberals in New York don’t like what Cruz said, but they’re not the people he’s appealing to. Unlike the establishment RINOs, Cruz is trying to build up the conservative base.
