Here’s a story that likely won’t make it to the mainstream media. On March 25, an armed 43-year-old man in Arizona went pharmacy-hopping, looking to steal prescription painkillers like Oxycotin and Percocet. He was thwarted along the way by 3 armed citizens, and it was all caught on surveillance tape. Guns.com recounted what happened:
“Johnson’s crime spree started around 9:30 that Monday morning when he walked into a local pharmacy, pulled a handgun on an employee and demanded Oxycotin. The clerk compiled and quickly turned over the pills. With the drugs in hand, Johnson ran out, jumped into the passenger seat of a black Ford Expedition and took off. About two hours later, Johnson ran into another pharmacy located about 20-minutes away from the first scene, pointed a gun at a pregnant employee and passed her a note demanding Oxycotin pills, but before she or the clerk beside her could comply, a third employee stepped out with a gun in hand and trained it on Johnson. Staring down the barrel of a gun, Johnson began to comply with the armed employee’s demand to ‘get down on the floor’ as seen in the video. However, before the employee could make another move Johnson hopped up and dashed out the store empty-handed.”
This happened a third time about 40 minutes later at another pharmacy. He entered the drug store, pointed his gun at the employees and demanded their entire supply of Percocets. The employees complied, but a customer was able to slip out the door to get help while the store clerks gathered the pills for the assailant.
The burglar grabbed the bag of drugs and quickly left, but was this time stopped by two armed citizens outside who demanded that he get on the ground. He complied, because this time he wasn’t going to be able to get away from two people cornering him with their handguns. They told him to remain where he was until police arrived. The man was then arrested and charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault.
This is an example of innocent, law-abiding citizens using firearms to protect themselves and others from harm. These are people who understand that you can’t always depend on the police to be everywhere at once. Does the surveillance video footage of these citizens protecting themselves and others with their guns look like the “Wild West” to you?
Not one person was physically hurt during this entire ordeal. And yet, we’re supposed to believe that if we didn’t have gun control laws, our society would break down into one giant bloodbath.
