Unions Flex Power on Black Friday, Consumers Ignore Them

Perhaps it’s cruel of me to laugh at the unions who thought they would strong-arm Walmart and other retailers this holiday season, but any time the bullies get their hats handed to them, it’s time for a mini-celebration.

As of late afternoon on Black Friday, Walmart was reporting record sales despite organized protests outside many of its stores.

It’s just hard to have sympathy for people who think they’re entitled to more money and benefits in an economy where millions would be content just to have a steady job.

Plus there’s the stupidity factor of joining a union in the first place. On a personal income level, most people will do better in the long run without belonging to a union. A lot of that has to do with union dues cancelling out any pay increases.

But not all was well with Black Friday. While the annual retail event is generally a boon to retailers, in recent years it has also become an outlet for some of the most crass, boorish and outrageous consumer behavior.

A sampling of headlines from Drudge is just the tip of the iceberg:

A recent Internet video of man on the street interviews found many respondents who view Thanksgiving as a celebration of racism and the destruction of indigenous cultures. Not a one of the respondents made any mention of God or giving thanks.

That seems to be a common and growing attitude these days. President Obama’s Thanksgiving declaration, as it has for many years, included no mention of God.

As God is removed more and more from our public life, incidents such as Black Friday violence are the price we pay.
