We Don’t Have an Immigration Problem

Please don’t misunderstand me. I believe that we need to enforce our current immigration laws. There are legal and illegal immigrants in the United States, and our government needs to deal with the illegal immigrants according to the law. Just because you don’t like a law doesn’t mean you can ignore it.

The Bible has a lot to say about immigration. Keep in mind that to an Israelite, the land was very special, important, and unique. Even so, God dealt justly with aliens and sojourners in the midst of Israel. The law applied equally to Israelites, sojourners, and resident aliens. The Israelites were to treat them as their own not to reject them.

Conservatives are named because they want to conserve that which is worth conserving. Godly principles should be a major focus and foundation of our Conservative values. The following are three passages of Scripture that give instruction on how to deal with foreigners.

When a stranger resides with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt; I am the LORD your God. (Lev. 19:33-34)

But as for you, you are to keep My statutes and My judgments and shall not do any of these abominations, neither the native, nor the alien who sojourns among you. (Lev. 18:26)

He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing. (Deut. 10:18)

There are others, but I believe you get the point with these. The alien was to be welcomed. When sojourners and resident aliens were in Israel, they had to comply with Israel’s laws. They were not forced to become religiously Israelites, but they could not subvert Israel’s religion.

Our problem of immigration exists not because we allow them in, but because of welfare. There are immigrants who come to the United States of America to find a better life like many of our ancestors before us. My great-grandparents immigrated from Italy. The United States was built by aliens and would not exist in its current form if it weren’t for us welcoming all who were willing to join us. The productive thrived and the unproductive fell by the wayside. We had our struggles, but it created an impressive wealth building and life bettering machine, the likes this world has never seen before.

America (and much of Europe) is currently addicted to welfare. Our own citizens bleed the productive dry by demanding ever more tax payer funded programs. Foreigners see the benefit to these programs in that they can use them (abuse) just by coming here legally or illegally. They don’t have to seek a better life by working for it. They just have to sign the right forms. This is not to indict all immigrants. Most are hard-working and don’t like what is going on with free-loading immigrants. They paid a high price to become a citizen.

We can solve part of our problem by limiting and eventually getting rid of all types of government assistance. This includes public (government) schools. While this would not stop illegal immigration; it would stop the major complaint that illegals are coming to the US to take advantage of our generous welfare programs.

Hispanics are a large voting block. Conservatives need to get smart. They need to embrace them. Hispanics share many of our values. They are mostly pro-God, anti-abortion, anti-homosexuality, and hard workers. Again, there are exceptions, like George Lopez. Look at any construction site, and you will see immigrants working from sun up to sun down. This was equally true in the heyday of America’s influx of European immigrants. For example, Italian stonemasons built some of the finest buildings in America.

It’s time that Conservatives come up with a viable plan. Sending them all back to where they came from is not a plan. We want them on our side, embracing our values, and voting for our candidates! Let’s not force them into the arms of the Democrats.
