Why I Fear Edward Snowden Will Be A Martyr

I consider Edward Snowden a global hero who has stood against the enemies of the human race. Maybe you think my estimate is too high. Maybe it is. But I doubt it. What the NSA is building on planet Earth is a truly unprecedented machine. It aims at collecting data on a level unimagined and to pierce privacy at a scale never before contemplated outside of dystopian fiction along the lines of George Orwell’s 1984:

“There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to.”

Damian Thompson at the Telegraph actually thinks that Snowden might bring about change:

“Edward Snowden has blown the whistle on this presidency. You have to wonder: Will Obama see out his full term? … I do not see how Obama can talk his way out of this one. Snowden is not Bradley Manning: he’s not a disturbed disco bunny but a highly articulate network security specialist who has left behind a $200,000 salary and girlfriend in Hawaii for a life on the run. He’s not a sleazy opportunist like Julian Assange, either… And I do wonder: can a president who’s presided over, and possibly encouraged, Chinese-style surveillance of The Land of the Free honestly expect to serve out his full term?”

I wish I could join Thompson in such a rosy view of our future and especially Snowden’s future. But I can’t. Snowden is going to suffer by means, “legal” (if we ignore the Fourth Amendment just like our government does) or extra-legal.

All the reasons why Snowden is more credible than Manning are also reasons why he is more dangerous to the Beltway establishment (for which Obama is a hired spokes-model, not “the decider”). And the Beltway elites are deeply entranced with their own view of their own wisdom and righteousness. Repentance is not an option for them. The only thing they can consider is how to marginalize Snowden and re-assert (at least to themselves) their own self-worshiping vision of their own status as our watchers and saviors. People locked in group think are incapable of course corrections. They are committed to the NSA total surveillance net. The only options they can even contemplate is Snowden sentenced to life in prison, Snowden indefinitely detained, or Snowden dead.

Remember, many other people know about these things and other secret things the government is doing to us. It is imperative to our regime that each one is clearly taught that revealing the government’s secrets (about how they don’t let us have any secrets) is an action that will end the productive life of the whistleblower.

What is happening to Snowden really tells you all you need to know about the international New World Order. Edward Snowden has about zero chance of being made a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, yet it is possible, and even probable, that he will be indefinitely detained or killed by one.
