When I was a kid in school, we often played cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians and even war. We were pretend shooting and stabbing each other and yelling pretend threats as all part of the fun. It’s been that way for hundreds of years. It’s just kids being kids.
These days, kids are not allowed to be kids. They’re not allowed to play and pretend in any of the normal fashions that they have for centuries. The ironic thing is that television, movies and games are far more violent and bloody than they were when I was a kid, yet kids are expected to be more peaceful, calm and docile in today’s more violent world.
As a result, many of our public schools have adopted the absurd zero tolerance policies that lack all common sense and only accomplish the ruination of good kids’ records. We’ve read about the boy who ate his pop tart to make it look like a mountain only to be suspended because a teacher looked at it from a different direction and claimed it was a gun. Another student was suspended for telling his friends on the school bus ride home that he wished he had a gun so he could protect them from bad things. Then there was the second grade girl that was suspended for telling her friend that when they get home she would shoot her with her Hello Kitty Bubble Shooter. And let’s not forget the other grade schooler who pointed his pencil at another student and pretended to shoot, like kids have done for decades, only to be suspended for his violent actions.
Now we hear of another case where a student has been suspended for being a kid and pretending. This incident takes place in the west Texas town of Odessa where the fourth grade son of Jason Stewart has been suspended for making a terrorist threat.
According to Stewart, his son pretended to the have the One Ring from the Lord of the Rings trilogy and was going to use the ring to make one of his classmates disappear. Learning that his son had been suspended for making a terrorist threat, Stewart met with the school principal where he was told that any threat against another person at school, whether real or magical was not tolerated.
Stewart told the media:
“I assure you my son lacks the magical powers necessary to threaten his friend’s existence. If he did, I’m sure he’d bring him right back.”
The media tried to contact the school principal and the district superintendent, but neither of them would discuss it.
The school seems to take issue with many things that are normal kid stuff. In the six months that the Stewarts have lived in the school district, they have suspended his son for two other infractions of their zero tolerance policies. Those other times involved him bringing a book to school that had a photo of a pregnant woman and the other was calling a black classmate black.
The report didn’t say if the picture of a pregnant woman was clothed or not. Yet I’ve seen photos of many textbooks and library books in elementary schools that graphically depict male and female anatomy and some even discuss why gay men have sex. Those are far worse than a photo of a pregnant woman and besides, I’m sure that many of the kids that have younger siblings saw their moms when they were pregnant.
As for calling a black black, most blacks I know preferred to be called black over other terms that are more demeaning. So if the boy is not allowed to call a black person black then what is he supposed to call them? I’m sure if he would have used some of the more popular alternatives he would have been disciplined as well.
So what is the real purpose of zero tolerance policies? Is it really about reducing school violence and acts of terrorism or is it all about forcing students to submit to harsh and intolerant policies for the sake of training them to grow up to be good little socialist comrades?
Kids are being forced to conform to one way of behavior only and nothing else is tolerated. It all falls in place with our socialistic healthcare program and other government polices being imposed on Americans that strip away at our human and constitutional rights. We are no longer the land of the free, but the land of the enslaved. As I’ve said before, it’s ironic that we are being socialistically enslaved by a black man who claims to fight racial and social injustice.
