I wish we could say we have reached peak cultural stupidity, but it just keeps coming. Now we have people literally calling the police when a comedian on stage “offends” them.
I know what you are saying… you think this can’t be true… right?
Egyptian comedian Ahmed Ahmed was appearing onstage at a comedy club in Florida when one member of the audience called the cops because he got offended by a joke.
Ahmed was joking about the stereotypical things people say about Muslims. When the man in the audience says he got uncomfortable.
As NBC reported:
“Clap if you’re from the Middle East,” Ahmed said, according to a clip posted on the club’s Facebook page.
After a smattering of cheers, Ahmed slyly responded: “All right. We got a handful of us in in here, nice. But, hey, it only takes one of us … to tell a joke.”
Instead of getting the joke, the audience member got on his phone… and actually called the police.
“He said, ‘That’s great.’ He said, ‘We can organize our own little terrorist organization,’ and I don’t think that was right. I mean it really bothered me,” the caller said, according to audio of the call released by the sheriff’s department. “And I yelled out, ‘And the paddy wagon is going to be outside to get all of you.'”
The man added: “My wife and I looked at each other and we felt very uncomfortable.”
Ahmed has since said that he has delivered the punchline many times and no one has ever reacted that way.
“I’ve told that joke about 1,000 times around the world,” Ahmed told the media. “Whatever he heard and what I said are two different things.”
Ahmed also joked that he held a meet-and-greet after the show. “Terrorists don’t do meet-and-greets,” he said. “We don’t say, ‘Death to America!’ and then, ‘But wait, let’s do selfies first.'”
Sheriff’s deputies actually came to the show to interview the comic.
Fortunately, the police felt the call was as much of a joke as Ahmed’s routine.
Man. Please. Someone tell me we are at peak stupid.
