Alabama Governor Kay Ivey Signs Abortion Bill

Update: Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed the nation’s most restrictive anti-abortion bill into law!

“Today, I signed into law the Alabama Human Life Protection Act, a bill that was approved by overwhelming majorities in both chambers of the Legislature. To the bill’s many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians’ deeply held belief that every life is precious and that every life is a sacred gift from God.”

Alabama sent the most restrictive abortion bill in the country to Governor Kay Ivey’s desk Tuesday night.

The law, which passed 25-6, would take effect six months after being signed by the governor, but is certain to face legal challenges from the ACLU and other groups who have already vowed to sue.

NY Post:

The Alabama state Senate passed a bill on Tuesday that would outlaw virtually all abortions in the state, making an exception only in cases where a mother’s health is in jeopardy.

The bill, which had already passed the state’s House of Representatives, will now be passed up to GOP Governor Kay Ivey.

The governor has not commented on the legislation, but is generally a staunch opponent of abortion.

The measure comes as conservative state governments across the country are taking up anti-abortion bills in an effort to get the issue in front of the Supreme Court.

A total of 16 states have introduced legislation to restrict the procedure, including four states whose governors have signed bills that prohibit abortion when a heartbeat is detected.  More

Over the last 20 years or so our country has become more pro-life. It’s the prenatal baby pictures that have shown people that at 16 weeks it’s not a group of cells, it’s a real baby. Our laws should change to reflect our current pro-life beliefs. It’s murder, and you just can’t reason your way out of it.
