Alabama Man Creates ‘50 Yard Challenge’ for America’s Veterans

Alabama man, Rodney Smith, Jr., was shocked at how many of our veterans were having trouble getting their lawns mowed in the summer, and so he came up with an idea that is sweeping the nation.

The 29-year-old lawn care business-owner decided to begin mowing the lawns of local veterans in his hometown of Huntsville. But he knew that more needed to be done.

So, he came up with the “50 Yard Challenge,” to encourage others to mow the yards of 50 needy people, such as the elderly, the poor, and veterans.

Soon enough, Smith’s “50 Yard Challenge” began spreading across the country.

Now, Smith is traveling the country and delivering free lawn care equipment to people who complete the challenge.

Per Fox 8:

“We mow lawns for the elderly, disabled, single moms and veterans,” Smith told the AJC. “For my fifth time across the country, I’m just doing a tour for the veterans to thank them for their service. I’ve come across so many veterans struggling to get their lawns mowed and that should be the least of a veteran’s worries.”

Smith has been mowing lawns free of charge since 2015 when, as a college student, he encountered an older gentleman who had struggled to cut his grass. At that time Smith pulled over, helped the man and then decided that night he would start mowing lawns for free.

Now, Smith has been to all 48 contiguous states for his “Thank You For Your Service tour,” which began last month.
