Starting with the flag flown on New England ships in 1775 that was white with a Liberty Tree and words ‘An Appeal to Heaven,” millions of American colonists and citizens have given their lives to protect the American flag and the right to fly it.
One of my prized possessions is a 48 star American flag made in 1942. This flag flew aboard the USS Fomalhaut, at the World War II battles of Saipan, the Solomon Islands and Bougainville. My dad was aboard the US Navy’s largest ammunition carrier at the time. After the war ended, the Fomalhaut was mothballed. During the process, the captain of the ship presented my dad with one of the flags from ship along with the information on when and where the flag flew. Thousands of Americans died or were wounded at these battles defending the American flag and our right to fly it. That flag means so much to me because of the sacrifices of so many in protecting it.
When I went to grade school, we were taught about the history of the American flag and the official code of flag etiquette. We were taught how and when to properly display the American flag, how to raise and lower it, fold it and even destroy it if it became torn, worn or damaged. We were taught to stand whenever the flag was raised, lowered or passed by in the parade, and we were to take off a hat if we were wearing one and put our right hand over our heart. To disrespect the American flag was the same as disrespecting America and for years was almost tantamount to being a traitor.
America has changed since I went to school and learned to respect the American flag, the men and women who fought and died to protect it and our nation. Our conservative, Christian and patriot foundations are being destroyed and replaced with a socialistic God-hating hedonistic anti-American culture and sadly the symbol of our nation is no longer welcome at a growing number of places.
Several years ago, a high school in California banned a student from wearing an American flag because it offended Hispanic students. There have been several stories of people, many of them veterans who have been ordered to remove their American flags from their homes and apartments. Just this month six students voted to remove the American flag from a campus lobby at the University of California at Irvine.
Now we hear that a panel of judges ordered an American flag display be removed from the lobby of a courthouse and the local sheriff is fuming mad.
Members of the Portsmouth (Virginia) Fire Department used old firehouses to create the American flag display and gave it to the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Department as a gift. The display read: ‘A Tribute to Public Safety.’ Sheriff Bill Watson was grateful for the patriot gift and requested that it be displayed on the lobby wall in the county courthouse.
To Watson’s surprise, the panel of judges refused his request, telling the sheriff:
“Not only do we not want it on the wall, we don’t want it in the courthouse.”
When the local media contacted the judges, one of them stated that they denied the request because once they approved one type of display they’ll have to approve many others. Then the judge told the media that if the sheriff wants to hang the display in his office on the first floor of the courthouse that he was welcome to.
Watson had been very outspoken about his anger with judges’ unpatriotic response, saying:
“I just can’t believe that they don’t want to display the American flag in a courthouse, I mean that’s the most asinine thing I’ve ever heard in my life.”
“They expect my deputies to put their life on the line for a judge. If somebody was going to come into a courtroom with a gun, the deputy is supposed to stand in front of the judge and take a bullet, but yet they won’t let us have our flag, saluting public safety? To me, that’s a slap in the face.”
Watson said that if necessary he will mount the American flag display in the window of his office so it can be seen by all and that he is willing to go to jail rather than remove the patriotic and honoring display.
Fifty years ago, those judges would probably be facing some sort of treason charges or surely be run out of office, town, county, state and country. In Obama’s America, the judges will probably receive the Presidential Medals of Freedom that Obama regularly hands out to others who endorse his destruction of our country.
After 9-11, millions of Americans proudly flew and displayed their American flags. Fourteen years later, Americans are being told to take their flags down and put them away. I for one proudly display my American flag, just not the one my dad gave me as it is too fragile. I encourage every American to display or fly their American flag and if anyone tells you to take it down, refuse and stand strong for your country. Don’t let these liberal anti-American socialists bully you out of your patriotism and national pride.
