Another Medicated Murderer: Let’s Take a Look at Psychiatric Medication

The liberal cry is for more restrictions on guns. First, there are hundreds — maybe thousands — of restrictions. President Obama recently issued 23 Executive Orders making it harder for people to purchase guns.

Second, the vast majority of guns owners never kill anyone. Why should their God-given and constitutional right to protect themselves be taken from them because of the crimes of others?

Third, criminals will always have access to what’s illegal. That’s what makes them criminals. Outlawing guns will work as well as outlawing drugs has.

Speaking of drugs, the Oregon shooter was taking at least four drugs.

“As the Oregonian reports, ‘There are a number of indications that Harper-Mercer had mental health or behavioral issues. His screen name on some social media sites was “lithium love.” Lithium is used as a psychiatric medication.’”

“On one of his Facebook posts, Mercer also made reference to a number of different prescription drugs he was taking.

“’I have a pill bottle with like five types of pills mixed in. I don’t know which ones are the sleep aids, so I just took four of each,’ wrote Mercer.” (H/T: Infowars).

Guns are easy villains.

I know how out of balance I feel after having to take some medication after surgery. After a day or two, I stop. My wife is the same way. I can’t imagine being on four different medications.

Mercer was probably loopy most of the time, on and off his medication. Reality eluded him as it did Columbine killer Eric Harris, ‘Batman’ shooter James Holmes, and Sandy Hook gunman Adam Lanza, all of whom were on some form of medication.

Bullets and drugs

Someone who’s mad at the world for whatever reason — Mercer was angry because he didn’t have a girlfriend and claimed he was “the most hated person in the world” ever since he “arrived in the world” — is not thinking straight. A mind-altering drug is going to change such a person’s perception of reality.

Pharmaceutical companies are big political donors. Don’t count on the media to raise the issue that there might be a causal relationship between a person’s altered state and violence:

“[P]harmaceutical giants who produce psychiatric drugs like Zoloft, Prozac and Paxil spend around $2.4 billion dollars a year on direct-to-consumer television advertising every year, meaning big networks are loathe to draw attention to the link between SSRIs and violence because they stand to lose millions in ad revenue.”
