Barack Obama’s White House Counsel is First Dem. Indicted Over Mueller Probe

Former White House counsel for Barack Obama, attorney Gregory Craig, was indicted on Thursday by a grand jury in Washington for lying to the FBI and failing to register as a foreign agent.

He is in trouble for failing to register as an agent fo Ukraine… and it is likely he also has tax problems with this because that is common with such cases.

Naturally, Barack Obama is claiming he knew nothing about it.

Craig, 74, of Washington, D.C., was indicted by a grand jury in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia for willfully falsifying and concealing material facts from the FARA Unit, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1001(a)(1), and for making false and misleading statements to the FARA Unit, in violation Title 22, United States Code, Section 618(a)(2).

An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed a violation of criminal laws and is not evidence of guilt.

Every defendant is presumed innocent until, and unless, proven guilty.
The maximum penalties for the charged offenses are, respectively, five years’ imprisonment and a $250,000 fine, and five years’ imprisonment and a $10,000 fine. The maximum statutory sentence for federal offenses is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes. The sentencing will be determined by the court based on the advisory Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors

According to LifeZette:

“NBC News reported that Tony Podesta, the brother of John Podesta, former Clinton Campaign chairman, has also been under investigation for FARA violations.”

“Tony Podesta was a former Washington D.C. lobbyist.”

NBC Added:

The probe of Podesta and his Democratic-leaning lobbying firm grew out of Mueller’s inquiry into the finances of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, according to the sources.
As special counsel, Mueller has been tasked with investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Manafort had organized a public relations campaign for a non-profit called the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine (ECMU). Podesta’s company was one of many firms that worked on the campaign, which promoted Ukraine’s image in the West.

The sources said the investigation into Podesta and his company began as more of a fact-finding mission about the ECMU and Manafort’s role in the campaign, but has now morphed into a criminal inquiry into whether the firm violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act, known as FARA

Craig’s lawyers exclaimed “it is itself unfair and misleading” and “ignores uncontroverted evidence to the contrary.”

“Mr. Craig had no interest in misleading the FARA Unit because he had not done anything that required his registration. That is what this trial will be all about,” Craig’s lawyers added said.
