A biracial rapper was so mad that her white fans were charged more than blacks to get into the AfroFuture concert that she quit the gig.
Late last week, the Detroit-based music festival made the big announcement that white people would be charged double the ticket prices that black people would pay to attend the concert.
According to the Washington Examiner:
The pricing offers lower rates for tickets purchased by “people of color” than it does for “non-people of color.” Early bird tickets for “POC” are $10 and $20 for “Non-POC.” Later date pricing offers “POC” tickets for $20 and “Non POC” tickets for $40. The method of confirming race and identity of ticket purchasers was not immediately clear.
The concert explained its intention in a FAQ on the concert website:
Why do we have POC (people of color) and NONPOC (white people) tickets? I’m glad you asked! Equality means treating everyone the same. Equity is insuring (sic) everyone has what they need to be successful. Our ticket structure was built to ensure that the most marginalized communities (people of color) are provided with an equitable chance at enjoying events in their own community (black Detroit)
But Tiny Jag (real name Jillian Graham), a biracial rapper based in Detroit, said that she would not appear at a concert that mistreats her fans that way.

“I was immediately enraged just because I am biracial. I have family members that would have, under those circumstances, been subjected to something that I would not ever want them to be in … especially not because of anything that I have going on,” the rapper told the Detroit Metro Times.
“It seems almost like it has spite, and unfortunately with spite comes hate, and that’s just not obviously going to be a good direction for us to go if we’re looking for positive change,” the rapper added.
After the backlash hit, the concert claimed that “white supremacists” sent them death threats, so they changed their pricing policy to a flat $20 fee for everyone.

However, the real reason the concert changed its policy was far more likely because ticket sales service Eventbrite warned the organizers that it would cancel their membership because of its discriminatory pricing structure.
“We do not permit events that require attendees to pay different prices based on their protected characteristics such as race or ethnicity,” Eventbrite said in a statement.
