Police said that the unnamed Illinois State Trooper had gone to the Dunkin’ Donuts Thursday at about 10.20pm to buy a large cup of black coffee.

The trooper removed the cup’s lid in an effort to cool down the very hot coffee.

That was when he saw a “large, thick piece of mucus” floating in the coffee, the department reported.

The officer was in uniform and drive his marked police cruiser when he stopped in the store to get some coffee.

The police department did not identify the trooper, nor the unit for which he worked.

Illinois State Police Director Brendan F. Kelly said that the incident “‘is outrageous and disgusting.”

“The men and women of the Illinois State Police put their heart and soul into protecting the lives and rights of all people in this state every day,” the statement read. “They deserve better than this insulting and dangerous treatment.”

Dunkin’ Donuts also put out a statement decrying the incident.

“The type of behavior reported to us is inconsistent with the brand’s values,” a spokesperson said, adding that the franchise owner of the location where the incident occurred said he “took immediate action to investigate the matter and terminated the individual responsible for this reprehensible behavior.”

The location’s owner also said he has reached out to the officer to apologize.

Regardless, the Ill. State Police have told all officers to stay away from the location at Archer and Oak Park Avenues in Chicago.

As should everyone else.
