Whenever I hear or see a Christian person, pastor, church, ministry or any other kind of Christian organization embrace the sins of the world, my heart breaks for them. I always recall Paul’s words to the Christians in Rome when he wrote:
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Rom. 12:1-3)
But this world is placing undue pressure on Christian organizations to comply with their sinful demands and sadly, many Christians and Christian organizations are yielding to them rather than standing up for God’s Word and what the Bible instructs us to do. They would rather switch than fight, which tells me that their faith has been compromised along with their relationship with Christ.
Now I hear about another Christian organization that has compromised their faith to conform to the ways of the world. World Vision just announced that they will allow the hiring of Christians that are in a legal same-sex marriage. Although they don’t see it as a compromise of their faith and values, they are trying to cover it over by saying it is a sign of Christian unity.
Richard Stearns, President of World Vision’s US Branch referred to the new ruling as a ‘very narrow policy change’ and then tried to say that it should be regarded as:
“…symbolic not of compromise but of [Christian] unity.”
Unity with what? Is he trying to convince everyone that embracing the abominable sin of homosexuality (as God referred to it) is just unity and not compromise? What part of the definition of ‘compromise’ does he not understand?
Stearns went on to say:
“Changing the employee conduct policy to allow someone in a same-sex marriage who is a professed believer in Jesus Christ to work for us makes our policy more consistent with our practice on other divisive issues. It also allows us to treat all of our employees in the same way: abstinence outside of marriage, and fidelity within marriage.”
Does that mean they condone brother marrying sister as long as they keep their fidelity within the marriage? What about a marriage of three or four individuals? What about a marriage between a 55 year old man and 10 year old boy or girl?
You may argue that these are not legal marriages, but who is to say that they will not be legal in 1-5-10 or 20 years from now. As Christians, we should be looking at God’s definition of marriage not man’s. Remember how man is described in Genesis 6:5:
“The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”
How can man, whose thoughts are evil continually, be wise enough to supersede the statues and teachings of our omniscient Creator God? The very first covenant that God made with man was the covenant of marriage. All through Scripture God has made it clear that marriage is a holy union between one man and one woman, not a man with a man or woman with a woman.
Leviticus 20 spells out the punishment for child sacrifices and sexual immorality. In verse 13, God says:
“If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.”
Then in verse 22, God said:
“You shall therefore keep all my statutes and all my rules and do them, that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you out.”
Christians who claim that homosexuality is normal just ignore sections of Scripture like Leviticus 18, 30, Romans 1:18-31 and others. They pick and choose what part of God’s statues they want to live by and what ones they ignore. It’s no different than what we see in President Barack Obama picking and choosing what laws and parts of the US Constitution he wants to uphold and what ones he deliberately ignores.
I condemn World Vision for the COMPROMISE with the world as that is exactly what it amounts to. Just as God has withdrawn His hand from our nation for our sins, including the embracing of homosexuality, I’m sure He will begin to withdraw His hand of blessing from World Vision. When that happens, they have no one to blame but themselves.
NOTE: As this article was being edited, it was discovered that the board for World Vision US reversed their decision. In letter sent to the supporters on Wednesday, they stated:
“Today, the World Vision U.S. board publicly reversed its recent decision to change our national employment conduct policy. The board acknowledged they made a mistake and chose to revert to our longstanding conduct policy requiring sexual abstinence for all single employees and faithfulness within the Biblical covenant of marriage between a man and a woman.”
However, my condemnation of the organization remains because they didn’t reverse their decision due to making a biblical error but because they received so many complaints and lambasting in the media. Just as they compromised their Christian values in making the wrong decision in the first place, they again changed their decision solely on public pressure. The bottom line is that they did not reverse their decision because it was the biblical right thing to do. This tells me that their loyalty to biblical truth is weak and according to Lucy in the Peanuts comic strip, they are wishy washy just like Charlie Brown.
